no but literally trying to describe the premise of the raven cycle to people is so embarrassing it’s like. It’s YA fearuring high schoolers (red flag) who are private school boys (red flag) and one girl (BIGGER red flag that says “bechdel test? unlikely”) who’s kinda quirky (“not like other girls” red flag) who’s not psychic but she wants to be and she’s supposed to kiss and/or kill one of the guys (apparent heterosexuality red flag) who wears sperries and khakis (BIGGEST RED FLAG) and also all the guys are kinda in love with each other but not always explicitly (queerbaiting red flag) and there’s a quest to find this dead welsh guy and a lot of magic that’s also a metaphor (pretentious red flag) & a lot of homoerotic descriptions of cars. anyway it’s my favorite series and -

Love stories where the characters are trapped within their tragedies. Stories where the characters are a little bit aware of their narrative prison. Stories where being an audience member makes you complicit in their torment. Stories where the characters hate you for witnessing their suffering. Stories where they’re trapped by the very nature of the tale’s existence. Stories where the only way to save them is to stop watching.

wait i just realized more significance around adam/ronan/blue birthdays:

adam’s 18th birthday is when he embraces being the magician and accepts his role with cabeswater. ronan’s 18th birthday is the day his brothers leave, marking his independence and when he finally kisses adam. they’re both big moments of change for them and show them growing into adulthood.

but blue is younger, and only turns 17 in bllb. it’s not a moment of revelation or new beginnings, because she refuses to look beyond this year because all it means for her is that gansey is dead.

in bllb when people try to get her to consider the future after her birthday (guidance counselor and orla), all she sees is a life without gansey. shes still feels stuck at 17, just like gansey or noah.

but her 18th bday would come after the series ends, right before she starts her road trip with gansey and henry, and that’s her moment of of growing into adulthood, knowing that the year has passed and gansey is living, and that they all can truly start their new beginning

i love the detail that we get to see blue, ronan, and adam’s birthdays during the series. we see them grow up and contemplate their future beyond this weird year of their life.

but we never get gansey or noah’s birthday. (gansey’s assumably between nov-april and noah’s unknown), because they’re both stuck between being teenager and adults and don’t have futures to look towards.

finally, in the epilogue when gansey’s birthday has passed, we see him hopeful and living, and finally looking beyond this perpetual state adolescence.

but we never get to see noah grow up at all.
