What if I have nothing to ask?
Then perhaps I'd be offended that you think I have nothing to tell.

"Ffunny Ffriends" by Unknown Mortal Orchestra
This band knows how to take the '60s sound and spin it on its head. Sure, there's the hazy Beatles-esque vocals and psychedelic guitars, complete with sliding solos and soft, moving sexy beats, but the bass line brings Ffunny into the present. Last year, we had Avi Buffalo. This year, it's time to rock out and roll the windows down. Get out of the acoustic, folky, sissy-fied slum and check out Unknown Mortal Orchestra.

Album Review: It's All True by Junior Boys
I really wanted to love this entire album, but I don't. The album's premier single "ep" will have you dancing like none other, and some other tracks fit the mold, but... others are really crappy love-making music that go on for about three minutes longer than you want them to. If 80s disco music is your thing, some tracks are going to make you wet, but others will have you wishing you hadn't gotten into "Playtime" to begin with. Fun music that will compliment an already strong electronicy set... but only a few songs are going to actually make one.
RIYL: Hot Chip, Caribou (of the Odessa variety), Cut Copy

"Red Dress" by Pictora
This CD arrived to WKNC with a label recommending it to listeners of Sleigh Bells, so of course I was intrigued. After my first listen, I definitely disagree with the comparison; Pictora is loud, but it isn't hard. This isn't to say that I didn't enjoy the album, though.
From the start of Red Dress, a heavy bass beat provides backing to pretty straight forward lyrics. There aren't any harsh sounds here, and though there is a very full sound, there's no distortion or grating noises. The synthy melodic line at about a minute in reminds me of the cuteness of YACHT. Pictora is best described as CSS crossed with M.I.A. It's a wonderful summer beat, and I look forward to hearing a full LP sometime in the future!

“True Loves” by Hooray for Earth
This band is about to explode. It’s phenomenally good and catchy. It’s the perfect blend of sound, and you’re going to find yourself trying to sort through its influences as you listen. The chorus adds counter-harmonies that are reminiscent of Why?, but the band throws in glitchiness that will remind you more of PVT or maybe Akron/ Family’s most recent S/TH II album. The background is pleasantly grating sometimes and throws in uncomfortable screeching frequencies. I found myself thinking back to Sufjan Stevens’ The Age of Adz and Rafter’s Quiet Storm. This music bends itself to make you think. The carefully recorded imperfections are what makes it wonderful.
This isn’t to say Hooray for Earth’s “True Loves” is inaccessible. The vocals are very poppy and compatible with the main-stream, adding an intriguing contrast to the complex and volatile musical mountain behind them. This band drips of delicious irony: it is slow yet fast, there is a deep-bass backing to each song juxtaposed against a cheery lead singer, and simple lyrics cancel out an intricate instrumentation.
The band is currently touring the United States with Architecture in Helsinki, but I have a feeling that they will be the ultimate stars, outshining each concert’s headliner. This is a band to watch, no doubt.

"Blackeye" by Love Inks
I swear that this trend of bizarre-o music videos is unintentional, though it would appear to be a good predictor of amazing music. In this track off of Love Inks' most recent album, E.S.P., the gorgeous husband-wife duo and their guitarist produce lo-fi yet full sounds reminiscent of Warpaint. Sherry LeBlanc's vocals are quite nice and this song will have you floating on air.

"Twinkl Sr" by Mane Mane
This is the first video I have ever seen that uses the "skinnyscreen" format. I really dig it, but I don't think it's going to catch on as anything more than a gimmick. It works quite well with this spacious song filled with space-like blip blurp clash clods. Just get lost in it and try not to surface for a few minutes. Everybody needs to do that every once in a while. Also, do I hear Rebecca Black being sampled in there?! I know I don't, but

"Ungirthed" by Purity Ring (video NSFW)
Heavy and glitchy synths are scattered against the luscious voice of Megan James in what is my favorite discovery of this week. It's chill, it's intense, it's harsh, it's soft, and it's this perfect contrast that has me on the edge of my seat waiting for a full LP from Purity Ring. This shows great potential.

Article for The Technician
Animal Collective’s Merriweather Post Pavillion was the apogee of 2009 music. The first time I heard the album, I was filled with absolute intrigue- complex and subtle melodies evolved from thin, scaley, harsh textures in unexpectedly delightful ways. I was carried to heights I didn’t before know existed. The music was horrifying, yet it was wondrous, much like the first time I witnessed an eclipse or experienced a roller coaster. Its mystique drew me in and captured my attention in an unusual way. I didn’t know how to approach the organized sea of harmonies, but I sat with my earbuds tightly in and listened. For the first time in years, modern music had me captivated. Today, I attribute Animal Collective with having turned my musical perception inside-out.
Noah Lennox sings vocals for Animal Collective and plays drums and guitar for the band as well. Yesterday marked the release of his fourth solo album Tomboy, much anticipated since its titular single dropped in the middle of 2010. Previous releases by the artist who goes by the moniker of Panda Bear spanned into the deeply abstract as scarcely-changing tones droned on for minutes. However, Tomboy is an interesting change in pace as what is easily his most accessible album release yet. Stylistically, it mirrors Animal Collective’s 2009 release in its patterned intricacies. Sound fills every track’s crevices, expanding to include percussive beats and crunches. The experience is practically religious, though in his April 4th interview with music journalism website Pitchfork, he hesitates to let it be labeled as such. “It's not serious in a heavy-handed way-- and I really hesitate to say it has any sort of religious or sacred feeling-- but it's in that direction to me,” Lennox told the website. He continued to describe the conditions of the recording studio: dimly lit, uncomfortable, isolated, and in a basement in Lisbon.
Despite its studio recording setting, this album is anything but claustrophobic. In “Slow Motion,” depth is portrayed with every reverberating beat. This piece is the impressionism of modern music; every meticulously placed, painstakingly perfected stroke of tone is visible under the microscope and up for interpretation. The listener is likely to find his or herself lost in the spaciness while attempting to sift through the multitude of layers.
“Alsatian Darn” plays with vocal inflections. Lennox himself fades into his music, becoming another instrument in the mixture. “Say, can I make a bad mistake? Say what it is I want to say to you, say what...” These lyrics loop into a cyclone of emotional confusion, and somehow, the line between the listener’s psych and that of the creator fades.
Tomboy is Panda Bear’s most recent album release and one of the most emotive albums that this reviewer has ever heard. It’s mastery of riveting textures is matched by the unique mood it creates. It is the perfect example of this generation’s innovations in genres, and every listen-through is guaranteed to uncover previously overlooked details.

“Castles in the Snow” by Twin Shadow
80’s style synth-wave goodness that’s sure to have you pulsating in your seat. It has that grinding deep bass hum backing the entire song that I just adore. Also, I’m seeing Twin Shadow opening for The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart on Saturday, so why not?!
For listeners of Javelin, Gayngs, and Fuck Buttons.

"Pinned" by When Saints Go Machine
Think Antony from Antony and the Johnsons mixed with heavy bass and a sweet ass-beat and you get this band from Copenhagen. Just a warning, these beats have that cliched infectious beat that will have you listening a sixth and seventh time. It's not a bad thing.

"Quitters Raga" by Gold Panda
Gold Panda's new LP Companion gives listeners a peek at some of his older tracks from before Lucky Shiner. This track sets the usual glitchy beat into an Indian-inspired landscape of swirling rhythms and melodies. I'll be dancing out to this album for the next few weeks. I've come to expect the world from Gold Panda, and this new release fills my every expectation.

"Goth Star" by Pictureplane
I've been on the biggest glitch kick of my life for these past several days... if you like Baths or Star Slinger, you should definitely be listening to Pictureplane as well. It's old but who gives a fuck. It's just the perfect amount of musicgasm.

"Plath Heart" by Braids
I simply can't stop listening to this band... I get lost in the Philip-Glass-like background synth, and when I'm awakened on the other end, it's to the voice of lead female vocalist Raphaelle Standell-Preston, it is from the most pleasant of slumbers. Also, this band is Canadian and really, really fucking cute. Just look at the drummer and try not to drool...

"Forest Eyes" by Jinja Safari
Jinga Safari's debut self-titled EP is the first digital album I have bought in over two years... I really like this band and I needed it last night. Imagine Local Natives with a younger Andrew Bird and you might glimpse the texture of this music. It's the perfect mix of tribal beats and soothing vocals that I need for the present mood, and it will hopefully fit yours as well. Check out the album; "Peter Pan" is another excellent with a neat music video attached.
