I got commissioned to paint griddlehark imagined as a classic romance novel cover, which needless to say is one of the greatest commissions of all time and I had an absolute blast.

Per the commissioner's request, I've also uploaded this art to INPRNT (link here).
Art without typography and a mock-up for fun under the cut!

Just. How much this series really is about love, and its many, messy shapes. How looking back at the end of Nona you can see it in the snark and the puns and the loneliness, in the many small and big moment. How much love and the lack of it shapes everything and everyone in the Locked Tomb universe.
And also just how many good quotes are in the books, not just because they are memorable or cool but because of what they represent.
i love talking about the references and allusions in tlt and what it is influenced by and how. however i do think that sometimes the discussion in the fandom tends to get overly focused on how tlt is like other things and we can lose sight of the fact that it’s not just a conglomeration of influences. and of course putting a work in its context is a crucial part of literary analysis, and we can and should be examining the work for its influences, both for fun and in a serious way. but i think we should also make it a point to more frequently call out and celebrate specific ways that the characters and series are creative and original!!
so i propose that everyone reblog this and add your favorite element/s of tlt, big or small, that are pure tamsyn. your favorite line, a piece of characterization, a worldbuilding element, a joke, a cool moment, a bit that made you think differently about something, a thematic thread, whatever. im currently thinking about the way i went nuts my first time reading gtn and its revealed that harrow spent all night burying bone shards in the dirt because it so clearly sets up how insane about each other they are, and how hard i laughed at “but she’s only nine years old!” in htn.
#The locked Tomb#The other book I read that gave me similar feeling is The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy#Which has some overlaps in the es#But it goes about it in a VERY different way

Thinking about "all I wanted you to do was eat me" and how it could have easily been Coronabeth saying this to Ianthe. Thinking about how having not been eaten turned Coronabeth from an imperialist princess into a freedom fighter and Gideon from a fighter for her freedom into an imperialist prince.
Thinking about Harrow and Ianthe the Eaters being stuck together while dealing (extremely badly) with how they did not eat their counterparts. Thinking about how Naberius got eaten instead, and how he represents basically nothing, and how Harrow gaslit herself into thinking she had eaten nothing. Thinking about how much easier it is to eat nothing than to eat the person you love most in the world.
Thinking about how Nona hates eating. Thinking about how meat loves meat.

Gideon bench pressing Harrow?
I imagine Gideon not even breaking a sweat, it's a light workout

ID: Digital Art of Gideon bench pressing Harrowhark. Gideon is a teenage girl with brown skin, short bright red hair, golden eyes, and a muscular build. She wears a dark grey shirt and black striped workout shorts. She is laying back on a workout bench. Harrowhark is a teenage girl with brown skin, wispy black shoulder-length hair, grey eyes, and a thin build. She is wearing a long-sleeved, grey shirt with ribcage-like decoration. She also wears dark grey trousers and black, knee-high boots. She is blushing and crosses her arms while Gideon lifts her. End ID.

Summoned To Serve God As One Of His Saints, but They Suck! (Also I Keep Having Strokes)
Reborn as an Amnesiac Teenager On A Refugee Planet -- and It's Almost My Birthday!

I hope that after reading Nona the Ninth and really noticing that each book has a different prose voice people stop calling Gideon dumb. No, the big, elaborate, descriptive words weren't a Muir thing—they're almost completely absent in NtN—they were a Gideon thing. This is a woman who was mistreated, raised without support systems, and got by on her own. This is a woman with an unwieldy vocabulary, who hides a keenness and intelligence because everything she's ever had is eventually taken from her; this is a woman who observes and learns. Harrow the Ninth had some of the best prose of genre fiction, compared to NtN's simple, direct speech. That was Gideon. You were reading Gideon's romantic, poetic soul expressing the world.
#the locked tomb#gideon nav#harrow the ninth spoilers#Gideon the Ninth has a lot of complex words in its narration too#I can see Gideon being the kind of person who has learnt that kind of words but isn't sure enough in their eloquence to use them out loud#so you end up using them in your thoughts and turning them around in your head instead
