On Making Trauma Legible:
How Interactive Fiction Identifies Trauma
by kastel
Trauma resists definitions. Nevertheless, people will try to write about it, even within interactive fiction. In last year’s IFComp alone, we see Naomi Norbez’s My Pseudo-Dementia Exhibition, B.J. Best’s LAKE ADVENTURE, Ayu Sekarlangit Mokoginta’s Lonehouse, and others deal with aspects of trauma. The value of interactivity is not self-evident as there are many works that successfully depict trauma without it. What does interactivity have to offer in narratives that explore trauma? This essay argues that interactivity helps players recognize trauma more clearly than, say, reading a book or watching a movie about it. Rather than passively watching trauma unfold, players can become more intimate with trauma through gameplay. Their interaction brings the unseen aspects of trauma into something more legible. Legibility is therefore an ideal for trauma-informed interactive fiction: it clarifies, explains, and depicts trauma in such a way that players cannot pretend the trauma isn’t there. In order to play the game properly, they must confront the traumas explored in the game, whether they want to or not.

being nonbinary and a fan of non-human creatures isn’t easy. like i’m constantly struggling with the fact that i’m both like “i wish there was more enby representation in humans” and “i’m the same gender as mewtwo and that fucking rips”

I was high off my ass last night and had this dream where I was in this dense ass forest and sitting there was a tall woman. She was so tall I couldn’t see her face but she was wearing gold and I was like “uh…hi?” And she said “I made you, do you know that?” And I nodded and she was like “I hear your thoughts. Why do you hate my creation? Why do you try to destroy yourself? I made you perfect as you are. Please don’t break my heart”. Then she started crying and it flooded and I woke up with fucking heart palpitations like what does it Mean™️????

Ted talk to every artist, writer and just general human being on tumblr!
I say this with love, care and the utmost affection:
Stop
apologizing!
I see so many writers and artists apologize for being sick lately. Oh you were sick and on bedrest??
"How fucking dare you be a living organism that isn't immortal and indestructible!!"
Jesus christ no! So you couldn't draw as much as your followers expected or reach your monthly word goal?
Did they die??
you couldn't work on the latest update because you kept on getting physically sick or mentally stressed to the point you are honestly guilt ridden?
The earth didn't open up and eat a town
You had to work or study too much and you just didn't have the mental capacity to open tumblr or answer asks?
No one thinks you are a bad person
We live in 2024 people. The world is a weird fucking place and everyone's depressed! It's okay. We understand and the people that don't understand and put pressure on you, make you feel like crap or tell you your a failure as an artist are FUCKING LOSERS.
I feel so fucking crap everytime I see someone apologizing for being unhealthy or unwell, or stressed, or have too much stress from exams and work or their personal life is just a shit show.
You aren't a robot, you don't have teams behind you, you aren't AI, you don't have a whole production squad that can help edit everything you need, or help you create and you cannot create when you aren't well.
Water doesn't spring from an empty well. You need time, rest, peace and kindness especially to yourself by yourself!
Yes I know you feel obligated to answer to us and give us an update as to why you've been quiet but let it be because you want to, not because you feel you need to. As a people we all need to just give ourselves more kindness. I'm stressed as fuck about work atm but I find some joy in the moment I have to scroll on tumblr.
FIND YOUR GODDAMN JOY AND ENJOY IT!!! YOU DESERVE IT!! YOU EARNED IT!! YOU ARE ENTITLED TO IT!!!
YOU ARE STILL A BADASS BITCH!!
Yes I'm sorry for shouting... thanks for listening to my Ted talk and please repost to every artist u know Tag that friend that constantly is down on themselves for not achieving their monthly goals. Tell them they still rock! Because lord almighty you guys are all just human. So please take care of your health and mental wellbeing💜
If I @ you I say this with love. Don't come for me. There's so many more of you but I have a shit memory.
