Tom Lehrer was found dead in his home this morning. He was 97 years old, so it's hard to say he was taken from us too soon, but anything short of immortality would've felt too soon for the mathematician, writer of pointed satiric songs during the early Cold War era, and writer of less pointed but no less genius songs to teach kids phonics on the 1970s PBS show "The Electric Company."

He never lost his sense of humor. In 2012, 2 Chainz asked if he could sample Lehrer's song "The Old Dope Peddler" for an upcoming track. Lehrer responded, "I grant you motherfuckers permission to do this. Please give my regards to Mr. Chainz, or may I call him 2?"

His works are all in the public domain, something which he did in 2020.

This is going to sound so "oldie yells at cloud" of me but the radicalisation of the young into black and white, zero shades of grey thinking, both in the media they consume and in real life situations, is genuinely terrifying.

The world is complex. The world is grey. There is infinite nuance in everything. No amount of trying to shove it all into neatly labeled boxes is ever going to work.

Last book: reading Proto: How One Ancient Language Went Global. I don't read a lot of nonfiction as a rule but this is about the spread of Proto-Indo-European, which developed into the languages most of us on Tumblr are speaking, and it's fascinating. Linguistics nerd!

Favorite color: I really don't have one. I can tell you my least favorite? A kind of muddy ochre-yellow-green?

Last show: Spaced (Simon Pegg, Jessica Hynes). And if I'm watching it again for the zillionth time, you know I'm stressed out.

Last movie: I'll be honest: Unless you count Bono's Stories of Surrender, I haven't watched a movie in months. Doing this little exercise is showing me how poor my powers of concentration have become, and that I'm way too upset about things, and I really need to change some stuff up.

Current obsession: Arguing with fucking online nazis, apparently :/

Looking forward to: A week in Wellfleet, way out on the "forearm" of Cape Cod. Feeling cold(!) at the beach, wearing a hoodie and shorts, the smell of the sea, the tiny pine trees that grow close to the shore, pine trees in general, dune grass, walking the trail to Great Island, fried clams, strolling in Provincetown, staying in a house that's considerably nicer than our real house, writing some fics... and who knows! Come on, September!
