First step taken, well it’s more like the fifth step for this field grown Japanese Black Pine but it’s the first styling. I’ve just had the pleasure of being the Artist in Residence at the National Bonsai and Penjing Collection of Australia in Canberra. An incredible program of information sharing, learning and getting hands on. I honestly believe our national collection has some of the best bonsai in Australia and is so important to the bonsai community that we should all strive to have trees of a standard to be accepted for display at the NBPCA. Time for the annual prune and clean up for this really large Needle juniper, Foemina Juniper. So far it’s nearly 6 hours solid work but it’s worth it. The needles are very sharp and you learn very quickly how to handle the foliage. Swipe through there’s some progress shots and a before pic. There is still a little more work to do removing wire and I will use a compressor to blow the pads. It grows so densely that there is inevitable dieback on the inner areas so this work of pruning and opening the foliage is essential. I love Radiata Pines as bonsai. The texture of the bark, lush foliage and their overall magnificence! I have seen them not managed as well as I think they possibly could be and I have a method and timing for candle cutting (not decandling). I love this Radiata Pine and over the years of working with this species I’ve developed a care program for them. Around early summer, I perform candle cutting (not decandling) which you’ll see in the pics. This has the tree back bud and generally will not produce juvenile growth.
