gerson's fight is intended to be progressed through fighting. it doesn't harm him because he dodges, and it builds up both TP (necessary to use rude buster and to practice Susie's healing) and impression points, so it's an action we can take without second thought. he taunt-dodges by doing a handstand and twirls in delight whenever we land a rude buster. attacking, using magic, is what the game expects from us. so we don't question it.

But... Gerson wrote Lord of the Hammer. While recounting what happens in his books, he cites "The Isles of NothernLight". Which is referenced directly in the Mantle game.

You know. The hidden LoZ like minigame where you're only given a sword, so even players on an all recruited playthrough have little qualms about slaying the enemies in the game. it's what the game expects from us.

...Except if you push yourself past your limits, if you take the harder road, if you DON'T fight or use magic against Gerson and simply defend or spare, he DOES react. The fight gets longer, with several of the hardest turns in the entire battle, and that's when he pulls out the direct, word for word reference to his most powerful dialogue in Undertale. His belief in the existence of someone who will always, always strive to do the right thing. Regardless of the prophecy. Regardless of how "the game is meant to be played".

Hard-earned. Bled for. Determined. Rule breaking mercy.
