Unsigned (Style Louis XV, France)
Sea Centaur and Nymph, ca.1770, terracotta, 43x34x12 cm
Private Collection
Original work representing a sea Centaur abducting a Nymph (Eurytion and Hippodamia?) The ichthyocentaur, also called centaur-triton, or sea centaur, with a fish body, and front legs of a horse (sea horse that pulls Poseidon's chariot), belongs to the family of Centaurs who lived on Mount Pelion, but were chased towards Mount Pholoe by the Lapiths. Work which can however be compared to "Nessus abducting Dejanira" by Joseph Chinard, Lyon), but especially to works by Johan Tobias Sergel (1740-1814), "Centaur enlacant une Bacchante". (Antikeo)
