I started making this cover one year ago, but I wasn’t happy with the yodeling parts and some phrases. But time passes and I gained experience which has allowed me to improve the result.
I listened to a LOT of covers by many artists from different sources (Youtube, Spotify…), each one with different lyrics and melody lines but all of them says “coyots" [ kh ai @U t s ] instead of "coyotes" [ kh ai @U t i: s ]. What’s the reason behind that? I have no idea, but it sounds more fluent.
The yodeling parts were the most difficult to perfect, I tried different phonemes and timings to get something decent. Obviously, the result is good and funny but it’s far from being a real yodel emulation.
Basically, for yodeling the singer changes the pitch and quickly switches between the chest and head voice. To emulate that in Vocaloid just only in the high notes of the yodel I moved upward the GEN (where you get a falsetto tone) and DYN/BRI parameters for more power and resonance, close to head voice. At the same time, it was good to decrease DYN value in the low notes for a more dynamic expression.
As Vocaloid editor has no tools to take the legato time under control between notes, I had to reduce the legato time adding 2/64 [ - ] notes at the end of the low notes (It would much better for pitch to use 1/64 notes, but unfortunately it affects how will sounds the next consonant). In this way you obtain a close square wave for pitch changes between notes instead of the common sine wave.
Well well well…. that one was a very fun exercise with Voca-yo-dee-yo-deee-loid!
