What happens to the NPCs between the two games? Is there continuity? This blog will be looking at the same NPC between botw and totk to see what's going on with them. Additionally, I don't have a Switch 2 so I won't be using any of the new Zelda voice memos. If we learn anything new about any NPCs or I missed anything, please let me know!
Don't wanna be here? Send us removal request.

Torfeau

Torfeau is likely one of the first Zora NPCs that you encounter when you play Breath of the Wild.
She's conveniently placed herself at the Soh Kofi Shrine in Breath of the Wild so players are very likely to encounter her promptly as they approach the region.

She's helping Prince Sidon find a Hylian so they can save the Domain from Vah Ruta. She kindly points him out, too.

After we help with the Main Quest, Torfeau expresses her gratitude with another quest. "The Giant at Ralis Pond."

(Does anyone else notice how many times NPCs mention how Link smells? No? Just me?)

In Tears of the Kingdom, Torfeau guards the throne room while the sludge incident is going on.

Later, she'll also point us to Gaddison so we can help him clear out some monsters.

She's not a guard for Sidon in this story, but she seems quite content with her job. Quite professional, too, since she doesn't want to get too chummy with us.

Ashe

Ashe is a stable hand that gives directions at Woodland Stable.
In Breath of the Wild, he can tell you about the Eldin region, Hyrule Field, and Hyrule Forest (Lost Woods).
He specifically tells us to stay far away from Hyrule Field.

Hyrule Field is covered in Guardians at this point, so it's a good tip.
If you ask about Hyrule Forest, he'll tell you about the time he got lost as a boy collecting firewood in the Lost Woods.

At night, you can find him watching over his granddaughter, Shamae. You might remember her as from her sidequest where she wants to see a balloon.

In Tears of the Kingdom, he has maintained his position as a Stable Hand. He will tell us about the surrounding areas and warns us about some main quest adventures.

When asked about the castle (which is floating), he'll even say that maybe a princess is trapped up there.

Overall, a nice guy to chat with!

Lukan

Lukan is an undercover Gerudo soldier who is hunting down the Yiga clan.
She states that she's in disguise as a merchant.

She's still in Gerudo clothing, so it might be difficult to see how this is a disguise. The typical Gerudo soldier outfit has a mask of some sort and shin guards. They also seem to have more distinct chest coverings that are supported with gold rather than just cloth.

Note the extra gold that the soldiers wear into battle.
She's in disguise because of the Yiga clan.

I wasn't able to find any cases where she attacked a Yiga clan member in disguise, but it's nice that someone else is trying to protect innocent travelers.
I see her mostly in Gerudo Canyon, but she'll also appear in Gerudo Town.

In Tears of the Kingdom, she's still on the prowl, still looking for Yiga. She seems to have expanded her search, since I found her at Outpost Ruins.

We're unable to tell her about any hideouts that we've found, however.

Perda

Perda is a young adult Gerudo who is looking for love. She decides to start her search at the legendary Lover's Pond in the Faron region.

It might be more surprising that more Gerudo don't come to Lover's Pond. It's curious how Perda has heard of this place at all, since it seems to be a niche tourist attraction.
She likely took the Voe and You classes, since she mentions not making the first move.

She seems a lot more outgoing, while Wabbin seems more shy, so they've got that opposites-attrach energy going on.

It's curious that Blue Nightshades are her favorite type of flower, since I don't think there are any that grow in the Gerudo region, so I'm not sure where she would have seen them.

Wabbin was initially only going to pay us 20 rupees for our troubles of getting them together, but Perda insists that he pay more.

However, Perda seems quite happy with the relationship.

A fairy tale ending!
In Tears of the Kingdom, we find that Perda and Wabbin have had a daughter, Aaqlet. I headcanon that about 6 years have passed in between games (to mirror how much time passed irl), so it seems like they got married and had Aaqlet pretty quickly.
It's not stated the exact age that Gerudo children start their pilgrimage back to Gerudo Town, but it's likely when they're around 4 or 5.
It's unclear what job Perda had before her expedition, but she's moved back to Gerudo Town with her daughter. She now works at the Secret Shop, which Aaqlet has a map to.

So, Perda reveals that she does not know that Wabbin is in town. She seems to miss him, so why hasn't she gone to check on him? Frankly, why aren't there more Gerudo husbands chilling at the Bazaar? Are there a lot of dead beat dads in Hyrule? And why doesn't Link tell Perda that Wabbin is in prison? I think it's a huge missed opportunity for this not to be a side quest. If there's some way to get them back together, please let me know, because I couldn't find anything.

Wabbin

Wabbin is the young man by Lover's Pond that we help get together with Perda.

In Breath of the Wild, he got lost and ended up at Lover's Pond. However, he's quickly falling in love with the only other person up there, Perda.

He wants to ask her out, but he's too intimidated. He wants to give her flowers, though.

So we do it for him.

They say opposites attract, so a timid guy and a confident gal could work well.
In Tears of the Kingdom, we see that the happy couple got married and even had a daughter, Aaqlet!
However, Perda and Aaqlet moved to Gerudo Town, and Wabbin wasn't allowed in so...

...he's in jail.

As far as I can tell, he hasn't been able to talk with either of them, which is quite sad! Perda doesn't seem to know he's there, and as far as I know, you can't get them all back together. Wabbin seems happy that he can see Aaqlet run past once in a while.

Guy

Guy is a Rito (with an excellent name) who hangs out at Kara Kara Bazaar. He does not leave in between games.
In Breath of the Wild, Guy left Rito Village to make some money and ended up in Gerudo Desert.

Because of how bad the temperature gets, he's looking for a cooling elixir (the quest An Ice Guy).

However, once the quest is completed, he sticks around.

However, in the day he says this:

In Tears of the Kingdom, he's still there!

He does give us advice for getting through the sand shrouds plaguing the area.

It seems like he's pretty happy here in the desert, despite still wearing the warm gear. At least he's found a tree to lean against now.

Chio

Chio is a Korok that can be found just outside the Great Deku Tree's Navel. He can guide Link to where he needs to go in Korok Forest.

Chio is unique in that he has a different design than any other Koroks we see. He's larger than the average Korok, and he has mushrooms on his head and a peculiar leaf as a mask. He's more like Hestu than the average Korok. He also holds a prominent spot in the forest, a pedestal on the Great Deku Tree. Perhaps size of Korok represents rank.

In Breath of the Wild, he tells us about the Korok trials, which are handy shrine quests that help give you enough spirit orbs to get an extra heart if you're close to getting the Master Sword.
Funnily enough, you can say "no" to going on the trials:

He explains that these trials are a right of passage for Koroks.

I'm not as familiar with other Zelda games as I am with BotW and TotK, but I believe this could be a reference to Ocarina of Time, where the Link grew up with the Kokiri and could travel through time to alternate between being a child or adult. I don't think these trials are similar to anything in Ocarina of Time, but let me know if that isn't the case.
Another interesting thing is that Chio uses gendered pronouns for the correct. A "him" and a "her" Korok. So apparently Koroks have gender, or at least appropriate pronouns.
Later, Chio has dialogue discusses a widely used custom in Hyrule: giving prizes for favors or tasks. Every quest needs a reward.

This is good design for a video game, but lore-wise, I find it quite amusing that every person in Hyrule must procure a reward of some type every time they need something done. Does everyone in Hyrule have a quest log? Or is this just some procedure for the legendary hero? It would be funny if there were time-sensitive quests where if Link got too side-tracked, a different NPC would do it for him and got some reward.
In Tears of the Kingdom, the Koroks aren't doing well. There's a chasm in the Great Deku Tree where you have to clear some gloom hands out. After you do this, Chio tells you what happened.

He'll also lead us to where we can talk to the Great Deku Tree, which I needed in my first playthrough since I could not find the right pedestal (it's up the ramp from where Chio is).
Later, he'll point us to some Korok side quests to complete.

Lasli

Lasli is a young woman from Kakariko Village who is interested in fashion. Over the games, we can see her pursue her passions and overcome her grief.
In Breath of the Wild, she starts as the Shop Helper outside the Kakariko Village clothing shop (Enchanted). She immediately comes out swinging by flirting with Link.

Which embarasses Link.

All of Kakariko Village seems to know to look out for someone with a Sheikah Slate.

Most people probably know her as the firefly girl: a memorable quest where she's looking for someone to bring some fireflies to her while she's stuck inside.

She even writes about her woes in the town Journal of Various Woes.

Once you put five fireflies in her house, you have the option to flirt back to her.

However, during the Stolen Heirloom quest, we can investigate her as a suspect for the heist.

Around 9pm, she'll sneak over to the east path outside of town towards the village cemetery.

She has been going to the cemetery in secret to visit the grave of the love of her life. She's been keeping this a secret from her family, as she mentions that not even her sister, Claree, knows what she's doing. She also mentions that he died a while ago

She doesn't appear to be that old, so perhaps it was a teen romance? It may have been a forbidden love since she isn't telling her family about visiting his grave, though maybe that's because she doesn't want to admit she's still yearning for him.
Though, it also begs the question of where the rest of the young men in the village are. There aren't any male children or men Link's age in Kakariko Village. Lasli's lover was likely a Sheikah, since he was buried in the village cemetery. Lasli mentions that her lover died from a monster attack.

Link, however, is unbothered by Lasli unburdening her traumas on him. He's a man on a mission.

And you can keep asking her, too.

In Tears of the Kingdom, she is dealing with other family problems. She wants to travel and study fashion, but her grandmother, Nanna, has fallen ill from Gloom Sickness. Lasli doesn't want to leave until she knows her family is alright. Perhaps she's remembering the last time she lost someone close to her and is going through another emotional spiral.

To help her, we need to make some sunny veggie porridge. She's very grateful for helping her grandmother!

After her grandmother is cured, Lasli is free to go to Hateno Village to study fashion!

Later, we can see her outside Cece's fashion boutique! She is apprenticing under the legendary fashionista herself!

Between the two games, we see her overcome her strife and start making a name for herself! The fact that Cece was willing to take her on as a student shows that she has a lot of ambition!

Amira

Amira is a resident of Hateno Village who can often be found gossiping with her best friend Nikki while they do the laundry. She is the wife of the shopkeeper Pruce and the mother of Ivee and Azu.
Amira's life doesn't seem to change much between games. She spends all day talking with Nikki, and then goes to sleep on the second floor of the near by general store (The East Wind) where her husband and daughter work.

(They really need to put locks on these doors)
In both games, Amira and Nikki don't initially want to talk to Link. In order to hear what they're gossiping about, Link needs to go behind the laundry area they stand by and listen in once he's out of sight. Otherwise, they just yell at Link for snooping.

In Breath of the Wild, they discuss rumors about the Ancient Tech Lab up the hill and why there's a little girl running around up there.
In Tears of the Kingdom, they're all about fashion and brand loyalty.

Amira's a Cece voter. This isn't unexpected, but it is interesting since her husband's income partially comes from selling the vegetables that Reede is trying to preserve.
However, once the election is over and Link can acquire the Cece Hat, Amira and Nikki finally let us talk with them.

Other funny dialogue includes Amira saying her jaw hurts from talking to Nikki all day.

And that's what we know about Amira!

Dugby

Dugby is a young Goron with a lot of ambition. Unlike other young Goron like Offrak or Slergo, he is always doing his own thing, unrelated to the main plot.
In Breath of the Wild, Dugby is hanging out with his grandpa, Grapp. How Goron genetics exactly works is unclear, but from what I can discern from some Tears of the Kingdom dialogue, I would assume that Dugby came from the same rock as Grapp. Whatever that means. I point this out since there are very few confirmed parent/child relationships in all of Goron City (in this case, grandparent/grandchild relationships).

Anyways, in Breath of the Wild, Dugby initially tells us about a hidden treasure he hid. The challenge of this quest mostly comes from trying to understand what he's saying, since he's partially underwater..

The treasure is a drillshaft he hid.

But, he let's us keep it, once we find it.

Then he'll go back to chilling with his grandpa.
In Tears of the Kingdom, Dugby is now trying to find the ancient city of Gorondia. He's pretty secretive about it, but he has a habit of saying his secret plans out loud for all to hear.

We help him out by getting him around the mine carts. He tries a few different places to check it out. Despite his protests, he's very easy to follow. Doesn't even fade to black like other NPCs.
One of his expeditions that we can follow him on leads us to Mine-Cart Land.

Overall, he's got a lot of ambition, and who knows what other adventures he'll find as he gets older.

Moza

Moza is a chef with a passion for cooking. Though, she has varying degrees of success with her creations.
In Breath of the Wild, she can be found west of Daval Peak on a plateau next to the Ishto Soh shrine. There's some sort of burnt meat on the cooking pot next to her, and she seems to be fighting it with her soup ladle and pot lid. She won't let you interact with the cooking pot.

The meal is going so poorly that it's sending off a smoke signal.

She will teach Link about dubious foods. Though, I think most players know about dubious food by the time they get here. She'll teach us some of her recipes, though.

She cooks with monster and guardian parts, so her meals don't turn out well.

In Tears of the Kingdom, she's changed her base of operations to the Rikoka Hills Well.

Her dedication to the craft has paid off over the years. She is putting together Moza's Hideaway Restaurant where she takes your dubious meals and turns them into something palatable. Instead of using monster parts, she uses monster extract.

She will fix your dubious dishes for five rupees.

Her passion is still apparent after all these years!

I got monster stew when I went to the restaurant, but I believe you can get any of the possible monster dishes.

Konba

Konba is the NPC in Breath of the Wild that challenges you to a foot race just north of Mount Rhoam.
Konba is an NPC that some people might not have encountered on their first playthrough. I didn't know this minigame existed until I was trying to 100% the game. He has his own location on the BotW map called "Footrace Check-In".
He's very excited to race us!

If you decline, he says this:

And if you accept:

There's a pretty easily marked path up to the summit of the mountain, but there's lots of enemies that appear out of nowhere. Unlike most NPCs, his running is faster than our highest walking speed, so you will have to sprint to beat the minigame.

In Tears of the Kingdom, he seems to have picked up a new passion in life -- fashion! However, these talents got him kidnapped by the Yiga Clan.

He can initially be found in the Akkala Ancient Tech Lab Yiga Hideout. He's being kept upstairs, where we can free him. He mentions being more athletic than he looks, which might be referencing his runner past!
Later on, he can be found at the Lucky Clover Gazette on the lookout for more of Misko's treasure.

He does remember us after we saved him.

As far as I can tell, he's talking about the Frostbite set, but didn't seem to notice when Link was wearing the set at all.
I haven't quite figured out when he starts spawning over here, but I would guess it would be around the time you finish the Lucky Clover Gazette story lines.

Rik

Rik is a traveler that frequents the Necluda area. He is most likely to be found around the Wetland Stable.
In Breath of the Wild, he generally seems like a worried guy. He warns us about the danger of the area.

When I was getting these screenshots, I saved him from a Yiga footsoldier and he gave me a fish skewer.

When he's right by Wetland Stable, he'll ask you about seeing the Zora.

In Tears of the Kingdom, he is planted at the campfire at Wetland Stable.

He's in the Zonai Survey Team, and he's heading to Kakariko Village. But, he's not in a hurry since he's bad with directions.

It's nice to see so many travelers finding a purpose and getting jobs!

Chork

Chork is a stable hand at Tabantha Bridge Stable.
In Breath of the Wild, he can be found inside the stable drinking something. Unclear if it's alcohol or not.

He tells us about the blood moon shrine pedestal over at Washa's Bluff. Chork and Geggle seem to be friends, since they checked it out together.

You can tell Chork about the shrine after you complete that quest.

In Tears of the Kingdom, he seems to have more purpose. He's taken to taking care of the stable's white goats. Princess Zelda visited at some point, and she made quite the impression on him.

He tried to feed the goats whole Hylian pine cones, which they didn't like. Continuing the quest has us tracking down the goats by following a trail of pine cones.

After the quest, he goes back to the stable with the goats. When we talk to him, he's very thankful.

I'm glad he seems happier about life.
He also always wears a purple scarf along with his uniform. I wonder if it has significance to him.

His resting face always looks sad and bored in both games, no matter if his dialogue is happy or not.

Marot

Marot is one of the many NPCs that I call "Shop Helpers". She provides the valuable service of advertising and attracting customers to the "Marot Mart". This includes the general store, the Coral Reef, and the workshop, the Hammerhead.
Marot doesn't change too much in between games. She loves singing and humming.

Though, during the sludge crisis in Tears of the Kingdom, she's a lot more subdued.

However, she still writes songs and is very willing to sing it for us.

Once the sludge clears up, she's back to her peppy self.

We also learn that Dento, the blacksmith, is her grandfather!

All the singing might mean she's on the younger side of the Zora.

Chabi
Chabi is a traveler that players are likely to encounter at some point in both games.
In Breath of the Wild, Chabi is one of the many NPCs Link can save from a bokoblin attack.

I could find her camps in the West Hyrule Plains and the Shadow Pass in Akkala. It's possible she spawns in other locations.
As a reward for saving her from a bokoblin, she gives us Monster Extract. Turns out, she's looking for Kilton.

She tells us about Kilton and even where to find him.

I first encountered her in West Hyrule Plains and later in Akkala, so maybe she is traveling out there to meet him!
Though, she might be having second thoughts.

In Tears of the Kingdom, she's moved on to some other interests. Perhaps she felt insecure about other people saving her from monsters, so she took it upon herself to become an expert in impressive weapons.
She can be found at the East Akkala Stable practicing swordsmanship at a tree. She gives out the quest "Strongest Weapon in the World" where she's looking for a weapon made with a lynel horn.

She's very impressed by our work.
After the quest, she can be found watching the Stable Trotters.

Thadd of Hateno Village
Thadd is one of the first people you meet when going to Hateno Village in Breath of the Wild. He guards the entrance to the Village in that game. In Tears of the Kingdom, he becomes a guard a Lookout Landing!
In Breath of the Wild, he's cautious of our arrival at Hateno Village.

Though, being Hylian seems to be enough to pass his vibe check (are there races that he doesn't trust? Or is he just there to keep monsters out?).

He cares a lot about his village and encourages tourism, despite the harsh introduction.

Though, he doesn't seem to like Purah very much.

It makes you wonder if Purah used to have any friends in the village.
Thadd is not one to give tours. He tells us to ask Seldon instead.

He's married to Tamana (the egg lady), and he's the father to Teebo. They take over his guard duty in Tears of the Kingdom.
In Tears of the Kingdom, Thadd works as a guard in Lookout Landing on the east wall. He can often be seen looking out east towards where his family is.

He has a farming hoe now instead of a pitchfork, but keeps his farming outfit. It's unclear why he took up this job. We don't see anyone else from Hateno in Lookout Landing, so it's curious why he of all people decided to move. Perhaps he was concerned about Zelda, a resident in Hateno Village between games. Though, his son Teebo isn't old enough to attend the school. He also doesn't recognize Link, but plenty of Hateno Village residents don't.

Other fun facts include that his wife, Tamana, says she married into a poultry farm. So though Thadd doesn't mention anything about poultry or eggs, that is his family's business.
