     Xiro cast his eyes heavenward, growing weary of this constant prodding for answers. “Gods above, do I have to spell it out for you? I’m not talking about bandits and hobbes and balverines, Hero,” he hissed. “I’ve killed because I wanted to, because I needed to reach my goals and they were in the way. Because I wasn’t a good person. There. Are you happy?” 

     He still wasn’t. Hell, if he had to, he’d tear Sparrow and her family limb from limb to make sure he was never found. He hoped he wouldn’t have to resort to such measures, but he wouldn’t hesitate if she left him no choice. 

     “Is it not enough that I’ve stated that I mean you and your family no harm? That I’ve committed no sin since? Or are you going to throw me to the wolves when I have come to you seeking shelter?”

Not everyone could be such a bringer of light, even Sparrow herself had such trouble doing so at times.”Would be cruel if I were to throw you out after giving you hospitality.” It not against her better morals to betray him as such. 

“As long as you are not allied with Lucien, I suppose I shall help you.” She paused for a moment, before glancing up the stairs frowning. “Gail, go back to bed.” The stern mother tone came from within and the patter of feet sped quickly across the top floor. 

Sparrow took a breath then. “No one is free of sin, not even me. Whoever hunts you, should have to go through me before they claimed you, I can promise you that.” She said, before looking back at Xiro.

            “Wow, that’s pretty impressive.” He was genuine; he couldn’t imagine doing something like that in his shoes, so that she did it and so well in hers was remarkable. But, he supposed, it was just like her. “Jimmy must not’ve been much of a talker, eh? Or did you just improvise and get lucky?”

“More so he was much more homosexual than I anticipated.” She replied honestly, laughing at the memory. “Those were some good bandits, I daresay I let that band stay together.” She admitted to her friend. She believed to this day they still were around.

“Same.” She turned to her friend, giving him a confused look. “I don’t understand what they’re trying to tell us.” Usually this was a bad sign. “I haven’t felt this played with since I had Thersa as a guide...” Mixed signals everywhere...

“Nobodies broken.” She said, shuffling herself closer. “Sometimes a little bit bent, or hurt, but never broken. You’ll be alright.“

            He began picking the rest off, licking his finger at one point to help it clump together and rubbing at her face like a tolerant mother. “Is that so?” he asked, amused with the thought. “Jimmy must have been rather…” What was another way of saying effeminate and gay without coming across as an asshole? “…foppish. How long did that disguise last?”

“Foppish.” She laughed at the word, shaking her head slightly, making no face as Walter began rubbing at her face to get the whiskers off. “It lasted for a little while actually... I don’t recall getting caught  Spent a night with bandits, it was wonderful. Someday though, someone’s gonna walk into a camp and get called Jimmy, and it’ll go bad.”

     Xiro hesitated. He didn’t wish to reveal his true nature to her and risk being tossed out on his ear. After all, Sparrow was not the type to knowingly let the most dangerous man in Albion’s history into her home. Her child was here, her family, and while Xiro did not intend to harm them, Sparrow had no way of knowing that for sure. 

     No, it would be best if she remained in the dark.

     “Not your average teacher from Brightwall,” he responded with a tight smile. “I was a warrior, and I’ve… Well, I’ve killed many. That doesn’t tend to win you many friends, if you catch my meaning.”

She listened, alternating between focusing on the breath of her child, and Xiro’s words. He spoke in riddles, answering and yet not answering her question. It frustrated her. 

“As if surviving the Spire has won me any friends. I catch your meaning sir, but I’d rather if you spoke plainly to me, before I threw you out to whomever was looking for you, and collect whatever bounty they would offer me.” She wouldn’t truly, but she had to keep Gale and her husband safe. 

“You aren’t the only killer here.”

            “Well, I’m glad I can be that tool for you.” Really, most of his wit came from trying to keep up with her—she likely serviced him in that way far more than the other way around. “Seriously though, whiskers aren’t a good look for you. Let me get the rest off, aye?”

“Oh fine, you soft hearted fool.” She said, giving him leave to take the rest of the whiskers off. “I’ll have you know, back when I was younger I used to suit a beard so well, i could pass for a man. Walked right into a bandit camp as Jimmy.”

     “I don’t know who,” he told her, and that was true. He’d never seen their faces, never spoke to them. But they had attacked him on more than one occasion, even managing to wound him once or twice. “I only assume it is because of my past that they are coming after me. Why else would they target a teacher from Brightwall? I’ve done my best not to make waves, have kept to myself for many years. I’m nothing like I used to be, and made sure to bury that past as deep as I could. But here we are.

     “No one saw me come in here, as far as I know. I was careful. I took them on a wild goose chase before finding my way here. I’m fairly certain I managed to shake them.” 

Her brain was spinning as she narrowed her eyes. He was not what he had first seemed. “You are no ordinary teacher from Brightwall, then.” She had had her suspicions, but she wasn’t quite sure her suspicions had actually amounted to anything at all. 

“Who are you really? You’ve not made a target for yourself, true, but you have a past that people wish harm on you for. You bring danger here, and it is down to your past. Who were you, should i ask instead?”

            “Oh, don’t I know it,” he said with a roll of his eyes and a smirk. “It’s just one of the many unpleasant things about you that I admire dearly. Always one nasty step ahead of me—that’s how you keep me humble.”

She was very pleased with herself. “I like to think that’s due to all the nasty gargoyles. Had to be on my toes to find them all.” As well as fling some just as nasty insults back at them. “I need to keep sharp with someone.”

            “While that is true–and I lament neither fact–I fear my poetry has suffered.” He took in a dramatic sigh and looked off to the side. Indeed, the truth was his poetry was never very good in the first place, but it was always much more satisfying to blame it on someone in jest.

She leaned her hand on her chin, interested now. “Shall I promote you to Court Poet for a day then Jasper?” Just a day, Avo forbid if he was terrible at poetry, but knowing Jasper she doubted it. He was likely even better learned than Sparrow herself.

            “Woah–Hey!” he exclaimed, throwing his hands up in a gesture of confusion and surrender. “I go an’ let you know, like the good friend I am, that you’ve got bits of hair on your face, and you go and insult me. I find that rude and uncalled for.” He feigned offense, but it was a thin veil; he knew just how old he’d been looking lately and wasn’t as ashamed to admit it as he let on.

“Tis my job to insult you, Walter. As your good friend, I need to keep you humble.” She said as if it was perfectly reasonable and obvious. “I am generally rude and uncalled for, you’d think you’d have learnt this by now?” She grinned, sticking her tongue out.

            “One time, when I was very young, I gave my father a book of poetry I’d written for father’s day. His reaction? Show me how to use a gun.”

“Oh dear.” Sparrow tutted. “Well he’s dead now, and you know how to use a gun.” The queen in her failing health turned to the side, taking a swig.
