By fxf 23 août 2018

New Jurassic World sets revealed!

LEGO has just released the following information ahead of New York Toy Fair tomorrow:
Universal brand development and the LEGO Group create new Jurassic World adventures with “LEGO Jurassic World: Legend of Isla Nublar"
Expanded partnership features four new construction sets revealed for the first time at New York Toy Fair, based on an original, animated mini-series coming later this year.
Universal Brand Development (Universal) and the LEGO Group today announced an exciting expansion to the popular LEGO Jurassic World portfolio of toys and content: a new building sets assortment inspired by an all-new, animated mini-series – LEGO Jurassic World: Legend of Isla Nublar. Following the adventures of Claire, Owen and fan-favorite dinosaurs seen in the 2018 animated specials, LEGO Jurassic World: The Secret Exhibit, this new mini-series runs 13 episodes and will debut later this year.
Set in 2012, three years before the events of the Jurassic World movie, LEGO Jurassic World: Legend of Isla Nublar picks up where the story left off from LEGO Jurassic World: The Secret Exhibit. Newly hired animal behaviorist Owen Grady and Assistant Manager of Park Operations Claire Dearing team up on Isla Nublar to deal with everything hectic life around the Jurassic World park throws their way. And “everything” includes runaway dinosaurs, ongoing construction to expand the park, tourists everywhere unpredictable tropical weather, and an impulsive boss! Plus, a mysterious saboteur with surprising ties to the park’s past is on a quest to find a legendary treasure and destroy Jurassic World forever! What could possibly go wrong? Everything.
“The box office and retail success of 2018 proved Jurassic World is the definitive dinosaur brand,” said Vince Klaseus, president of Universal Brand Development. “This year we’re focused on continuing to expand the Jurassic World story through always-on content and new experiences for fans of all ages. Our partnership with the LEGO Group allows us to do just that and more.”
Building on the success of the 2018 LEGO Jurassic World offering, the LEGO Group will globally launch four building sets that take the storytelling and role play opportunity beyond the blockbuster film year, giving fans the chance to bring new adventures, characters and dinosaurs home for even more play. The sets will hit shelves this fall, and are displayed in the LEGO booth #1335 in Hall 3B of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center from February 16-19.
“Jurassic World is one of those properties that just works so well in LEGO form,” said Jill Wilfert, vice president, licensing & entertainment for LEGO Group. “The theme and stories appeal to kids and adults at the same time, and with this content, we offer a fun and unique twist by adding LEGO creativity and humor to an evergreen property. We’re thrilled to expand our successful partnership with Universal to introduce more original LEGO Jurassic World stories that will inspire imaginations and continued play.”
The sets are as follows:
75934 Dilophosaurus on the Loose
75935 Baryonyx Face-Off: The Treasure Hunt
75937 Triceratops Rampage
75938 T. rex vs Dino-Mech Battle
You can view them all in the database here.

HoldFast “Money Maker Solo” Camera Strap
Photo above is a screengrab from Steve Huff’s video review, which offers some great closeups of this strap starting at the 7:27 mark.
HoldFast — whose products we’ve featured previously — is an Oklahoma-based company that produces fine leather goods for photographers and travelers. A few months ago, they released the Money Maker Solo, a cross-body leather strap based on the original multi-camera Money Maker but designed for single-camera shooters.
The comfortable shoulder pad has a second stabilizer strap that goes underneath your arm to keep the entire thing in place without digging into your skin, even if you’re carrying a large camera on it.
The included belt anchor is an awesome addition that allows you to…well, anchor the camera on your belt (it’s right there in the name, folks) so you can stay active, bend over, or do whatever else you need to do without your camera swinging forward or getting in your way. When you’re ready to shoot, pull the leather tab and your camera’s free to pull upward, and can be re-anchored again one-handed.
HoldFast founder Matthew Swaggart made a 4-minute demonstration video for the Solo:
The Money Maker Solo comes in five colors:
Chestnut ($175)
Tan ($175)
Water Buffalo Burgundy ($185)
Water Buffalo Black ($185)
Water Buffalo Tan ($185)

Kickstarter: The Deadly Spawn Vinyl Figure
The Deadly Spawn is a 1983 science-fiction horror flick that attempted to "cash-in" on the popularity of Ridley Scott's ALIEN film. And now there's a Kickstarter project that's goal is producing a 9-inch tall vinyl figure based on the film's iconic monster. The project has enlisted the sculpting abilities of veteran sculptor James Groman. In addition, they're looking to produce a 2.5-inch tall version of The Deadly Spawn Larvae.
As with other Kickstarters, there are various funding levels. The Deadly Spawn Unpainted Set is available at the $120.00 level. The Deadly Spawn Painted Set is available at the $185.00 level. In addition, there are a number of other options. They're anticipating the finished vinyl product to begin shipping in March 2019.
This project will be funded if it reaches its goal by Thursday, September 27th 2018 at 3:01AM ET.
As I say with all Kickstarter projects I post about. Remember...this is not a pre-order. There are many instances of crowd funded projects that have been funded never making good on their promised goods. So back all Kickstarters with caution.

Slime Pit – Evil pit of gruesome ooze (1986)
Tumblr media
The Slime Pit was the second and final small playset released in the original Masters of the Universe toyline (the first was Point Dread, in 1983). Of all the playsets MOTU had to offer, the Slime Pit perhaps packed the most punch for its size. It was all centered around one play feature, but it what a feature!
Design & Development
The Slime Pit was designed by Ted Mayer, from an idea that came out of the boy’s design group’s many brain storming sessions.
Slime Pit, by Ted Mayer
In the above illustration, you can see many of the hallmarks of the final playset are in place, including the grabbing hand in the front, the hand around the side and the scroll design near the top. The slime-spewing head is wolf-like in this concept (a frequent theme in Ted’s designs, it seems), whereas the final version seems to have more of a dinosaur skull look.
Mattel more or less invented slime as a commercial product, and it has been a popular seller since the late 1970s. The Slime Pit was a clever way for Mattel to integrate its popular slime products into the world of Masters of the Universe.
Pixel Dan has done some extensive research on the history of slime. Take a moment to check it out in this video:
There is also some great information about slime in this article at Plaid Stallions and again in this piece by Dinosaur Dracula.
Production Playset
Slime Pit cross sell art
The final play set has a deeper pit area than the concept version. The paint applications are fairly simple, but it does have some well executed red and gray overspray on the gray stone areas and some brown overspray on the skull. These seem more well thought-out than the often haphazard looking paint applications given to the exterior of Castle Grayskull (particular later releases of the playset). Like the Fright Zone, the Slime Pit is adorned with Hordak’s visage (Hordak seems really into branding his image on all things Horde). There is also a sculpted skull near the back wall.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The playset came with a can of Mattel’s Horde Slime. This particular slime mix was much runnier than the kind of slime typically found on toy store shelves today. It was also available for free, separate from the playset, with the purchase of two action figures.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That runniness made it work great for the purposes of sliming action figures, but it also made it hazardous to rugs and upholstery, not to mention any furry MOTU figures like Moss Man, Panthor and Grizzlor. For that reason, there were a few warnings given about what not to do with the slime, which were of course promptly ignored by many enterprising young mad scientists.
Tumblr media
Some kids just want to watch the world burn. Image source: He-Man.org
Packaging
The box art was painted by the late, great William George. Taking cues from the design of the playset itself, the scene is set in ancient Greco-Eternian ruins.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The slime pit was packed with instructions for the playset and for the slime, a minicomic, and a fold-out poster.
Original artwork for the back of the packaging, featuring Beast Man, frequently-depicted victim of the Slime Pit. Image source: The Art of He-Man
Minicomics
The Slime Pit came packed with Escape From the Slime Pit, which showcased the mini playset’s power to turn its victims into mindless slaves of the Horde. In the story, He-Man is slimed and is only restored to his right mind by exposure to brilliant light:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Animation
The Slime Pit appears in the She-Ra episode, “Loo-Kee’s Sweetie.” It doesn’t really look like the playset, but it does feature slime and a number of dinosaur-like bones. In the story, the Slime Pit saps its victims’ strength rather than turning them into zombie slaves. It’s easy to see why this less disturbing concept might be preferred for the purposes of an animated kids’ show.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Other Media
The Slime Pit was featured in the June 1986 edition of Masters of the Universe Magazine, as both the cover subject and as a poster by Earl Norem. The artwork features Buzz-Off as the victim and Flying Fists He-Man riding to the rescue on Battle Cat.
It also is the centerpiece in a Kid Stuff audio book called Prisoner In the Slime Pit:
Tumblr media
Like the Slime itself, the Slime Pit was a concept that Mattel would revisit over and over again:

SCS DIRECT: Humans v. Aliens
Yet another new set from SCS Direct: Humans v. Aliens.  There are 8 figures each of aliens and human civilians.  All but one of the aliens can be used as fantasy monsters.  The humans are just the type of civilians I have been searching for to use in zombie set ups.  The housefrau ready to do battle with her rolling pin is outstanding.
Rosie?

If you missed out on this set when it originally came out, it looks like this will be a perfect time to get it! The set is available for Pre-order at TakaraTomy Mall, and is priced at ¥4,860, which is approximately $43 USD, cheaper than the original exclusive release of $60.
Does this set mean Takara is going to start releasing even more Hasbro exclusives, as we've seen so far with the Monsterbots? Will Takara release Volume 2? Let us know what you think of this release below!

Is this a mall exclusive?
From the looks of it, it was the Tokyo Comic-Con exclusive, with the leftovers sold at TakaraTomy Mall.

Basically the same as what Hasbro did with it going from a comic con exclusive to an HTS exclusive, just a lot cheaper.
And I'm sure they'll get vol 2 since the box still says vol 1 on it.

Pre-orders for current Owl Berry Lane creatures ending Oct 31
Heather Hyatt brings us the enchantment of the forest with her woodland creatures by combining woodwork and clay, dazzling accessories, and adorable and endearing faces.  Sadly, tomorrow (October 31st) will be the last day to pre-order these existing molds as Heather is taking time to work on some private commissions and future projects. However, she has these precious foresty friends to find homes for in the meantime!  Each of these pieces is handmade and will have slight variations that set them apart from their family at Owl Berry Lane, ensuring you have a friend completely unique to the world!
Meet Fionn the Totem Owl! You can read his story here to see how these wonderful eyes and this sweet body ended up cast as though in stone.  He comes with his key and is 4″ tall.  The eyes will vary piece by piece, also giving your totem its personal and unique character.  This little guy has stolen the key to our hearts!
Meet Ciarán the Totem Owl!  His dark feathered look makes him the perfect companion for Fionn, and if you read his story here you’ll see just how much of a friend to Fionn he is!   Just like Fionn, his eyes will also vary by order!
Heather also is looking to find homes for her Corwin of the Tuftlies!  Those big eyes!  That cute belly!   Oh I love the cut out heart!  And to top it all off, he has a single, sweet horn!  With his horn, he stands 4.75″ tall and comes on a sealed wood base that truly sets his place in the forest.  If you request, Heather will even customize his color!   Check him out here!
Lastly, we meet Eugene of the Tuftlies and if Eugene isn’t enough of an adorable name to melt your heart, his sweet little face will be!  With the recessed jeweled eyes and single snaggle tooth, his two curved horns, and his precious cut out heart, Eugene really embodies the sweet playful little monster his story portrays. And just like his friend Corwin, Eugene comes with a wooden base to proudly stand on!
Interested in seeing the next creatures that Owl Berry Lane reveals?  Follow Heather at her Instagram and head on over to the owlberry shop!

Questioning Your Diagnosis
There are many procedures that we carry out in our clinical work that are considered ‘risky’ and often, in an attempt to reduce that risk, checklists are created to ensure that they are carried out in an appropriate, consistent and approved manner. In contrast, the process of making a diagnosis (which by best estimates has a failure rate in Emergency Medicine of 10-20%) is mostly left up to individuals to carry out in whatever manner they have developed and often with limited oversight of that process. The frailties of our cognition are long established and whilst it may not be possible, or even desirable, to have all clinicians thinking alike, we must acknowledge these faults inherent in human thinking and make deliberate efforts to mitigate them.
One strategy that may help with this problem is metacognition, encouraging clinicians to think about their thought processes. What follows are six simple questions that attempt to trigger a more reflective process by diagnosticians and potentially reduce the impact of erroneous thinking.
They are: Who? What? Where? Why? When? and How?
Who?     Who is my patient really?
As we deal with a patient all sorts of shortcuts occur in our thinking to make it easier for us to process the excess of information we are receiving. Part of this process causes us to ’round off the edges’ of an individual patient so we can categorise them in to a familiar pattern. This leads to us stereotyping people by person (drug user, regular) or disease (asthmatic, Crohn’s), failing to see their individual problems and potentially missing clues that may point to alternative diagnoses. Patients can also be frustrating, particularly if they behave badly, appear to have brought harm upon themselves or because we don’t know what is going on. These feelings interfere with our ability to process information clearly and goes someway to explaining why psychiatric patients are at high risk for misdiagnosis of physical disease.
We need to take a breath and consider who we are REALLY dealing with, rather than treating the composite patient we have created in our head.
What?     What information am I actually using?
In Emergency Medicine in particular but actually across all specialties, we are often missing information that would be helpful to us when making a diagnosis. This means that as we try and construct a coherent picture of what is going on there are inevitable gaps in our knowledge. Unhelpfully, our brain (in a misguided attempt to make things easier) automatically tries to fill these gaps with assumptions based on previous experiences. In a complementary twist, our brain also notices inconvenient inconsistencies that would throw our preferred story off kilter and chooses to subtly alter or ignore these to reduce cognitive stress. The end result of these two processes is that we are not diagnosing with the information we have but with the information that suits us!
We should stop and consider the totality of the information available, looking particularly for features that do not fit our current thinking.
Where?     Where is my information coming from?
All information is not equally valid but this should be decided upon with reasoned consideration… unfortunately our brain chooses to make snap judgments. Information that comes to us from early in our contact with a case (triage notes, ambulance handovers, telephone calls for help) carries more weight than data that arrives later (blood results, relative’s phone call, nurse feedback) regardless of its actual accuracy. Similar judgments are made with information from ‘official’ sources (GP letters, care home records) or information handed over to us as secondhand summaries from fellow health professionals despite the fact it may already have passed through a number of unhelpful cognitive filters.
Information must be assessed for reliability but we must give all information a chance to be considered reliable and not just dismiss it based on snap judgments.
Why?     Why might I be wrong?
Above all else our brains are programmed to believe what we already think is true. Once we have a thought in our heads about a diagnosis the processes described above are slowly fine tuned to make that thought a reality… to us anyway! Whilst experience is an incredibly powerful tool for us as diagnosticians, it is also a gaping hole in our armour and so we must be extremely careful when we see ‘another’ pulmonary embolus/ appendix/ irritable hip/drunk. Jumping to a conclusion too soon stops us taking the time to consider rarer diagnoses, multiple problems and atypical presentations.
Our brains are inherently biased towards accepting what we already believe and so we must actively consider why we might be wrong if we are ever to spot the errors in our diagnostic construction.
When?     When will I review my diagnosis?
If we accept that we will make errors in our diagnostic process, we must plan to review our decisions after a suitable period of time: this is particularly true if we are waiting for more information to arrive (test results) or clarification of existing data (relative phoning with drug names). Watching carefully for new data that contradicts our current hypothesis is vital as our thinking will try to explain it away as an anomaly or perhaps even ignore it. At that review we must also reconsider all the previously gathered material as the new data may alter the relevance or reliability of that original information. Be careful when considering the condition of the patient or their response to our treatment as a marker of being correct. Many patients will get better regardless of what we do or with fairly non-specific interventions!
Mistakes happen, that’s inevitable, but planning to catch those mistakes and actively looking for where we may have erred is a choice.
How?     How do I feel now?
Our job is to make diagnoses and with training and experience comes confidence, and rightly so. We cannot spend our careers second guessing ourselves at every turn, so if we have reflected appropriately on a case and have a review process in place it is time to move on. However, most of us have experienced that nagging doubt in the back of our minds that says something isn’t quite right, a concern that we just can’t shake but we feel unwilling to voice. It is absolutely vital that we listen to these ‘gut instincts’ and don’t ignore them. Taking a diagnosis to someone else and explaining it can sometimes lay bare our errors (it is always easier to see someone else’s biases), as can unexpected results from tests we have arranged or an additional piece of history from a relative but we must welcome this process rather than fear it. It may mean the undoing of hours of work and the embarrassment of an explanation to a patient or their family but it gives us an incredible opportunity to learn and most importantly keeps the patient safe.
Confidence is good but regardless of the consequences for us, we must welcome the nagging doubts in our head, the questioning of colleagues and incompatible data as opportunities, not threats.
Six questions to make us stop and consider our diagnostic thought processes: surely it is worth the mental effort to try and improve a procedure with nearly a 1:5 error rate.
You’d want your doctor to take that time, wouldn’t you?
