The 40th Annual Putney Craft Tour, the oldest continuing craft tour in the country, timed to coincide with Thanksgiving and holiday shopping, did not spring out of a vacuum, but from the happy confluence of a number of trends including the back-to-the-land movement and the rise of American craft. No doubt, Vermont’s agrarian heritage created a culture of craft and an appreciation of the hand-made, which continue to this day. One of the founders is potter Ken Pick who arrived in Putney in 1969 after receiving an MAT from Antioch-Putney Graduate School. But pottery was never far away from his heart, and in about 1973, he began to earn his living from his craft. “There are still five or six of us here who were here from the beginning,” Pick said. “We banded together in one location before we evolved the tour concept.” In 1982, on the fourth annual tour there were 16 artisans working in 13 studios. The tour was advertised as the Annual Holiday Craft Tour, Open House and Seconds Sale, and the practice of going from studio to studio or ‘over the river and through the woods’ was established, inviting the public into the space where work is created to learn about the craft and talk to the person who made it. ~ Find out more at: brattbeat.com/thanksgiving-on-putneys-artisan-trail @brattbeat #BrattBeat #shoplocalbrattvt @putney_craft_tour (at Putney, Vermont) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bp9zRKkhdBw/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=qbrz0qqz3yza

MeToo Solidarity Rally on International Women’s Day
The Women’s Action Team invites the community to gather downtown on International Women’s Day. Meet at PLINY PARK at 5 pm. WEAR RED. Bring your signs and songs. In #MeToo Solidarity, we’ll rally against sexual abuse and stand with survivors of sexual assault and harassment. The #MeToo Movement gained momentum in October 2017, after the Weinstein “revelations” of sexual assault hit the media. A simple hashtag- #MeToo - spoke for millions and opened the floodgates for us to speak out, be seen, and support each other. Silenced no longer, we rally to give voice to our experience and change the way victims are treated in America. #MeToo is a global movement of advocacy and empowerment– let’s ride the wave here in Brattleboro.
Join us at PLINY PARK at 5 pm this Thursday. Be ready to march, shout, dance and dismantle the patriarchy. Male allies are welcome. Spread the word!

New England Youth Theatre, Flat Street, Brattleboro, VT
The 27th annual Women’s Film Festival Gala is here and it’s time for a Revolution! In honor of our exciting opening night film, Left on Pearl, our gala theme this year is revolution. Dress up as your favorite activist, be inspired by a revolutionary time period, or just rebel against patriarchal clothing standards by being your most glamorous, comfortable self!Kicking off the Women’s Film Festival, the Gala begins with a reception of champagne, wine & hors-d'oeuvres, followed by a screening of Left on Pearl. This inspiring documentary highlights a significant event in the women’s movement, when hundreds of Boston area women took over a Harvard-owned building to demand a Women’s Center and low-income housing for the community being displaced by the expanding university.  Tickets for the gala are $30 and are being sold now.  The Women’s Film Festival is a fundraiser for The Women’s Freedom Center, a nonprofit organization in Southeastern Vermont committed to offering support and advocacy to survivors of violence, as well as prevention and educational activities to help create a community in which violence is not tolerated.  To make a direct gift to support this important work, visit: http://womensfreedomcenter.net/get-involved/

International Women’s Day campaign theme continues all year!
March 8th sees the annual IWD campaign theme kick off for the year ahead, although many groups around the world adopt and promote the campaign theme from early in the year. The IWD campaign theme provides a unified direction to guide and galvanize collective action. The campaign theme does not end on International Women’s Day. It’s just the start. Throughout the year many groups worldwide adopt the IWD campaign theme for further campaign work, gender-focused initiatives, continuing activity and events. A great example of this was in 2017 when the USA Women’s Hockey Team went on to adopt the #BeBoldForChange IWD campaign theme to later rally for equal pay, boycotting the national finals unless a suitable deal was struck. Many fans and further teams supported the campaign.  Find out more at www.internationalwomensday.com.

Artist: Angela Deane
Entitled: Ghost Photographs; series selections; photography; variable mediums; variable dimensions; 2012-2017; present?.
Part 2 of 2
Artist Angela Deane covers people on found photographs with paint, subtracting the specific identity of each person and transforming them into anonymous ghosts for the viewer to project upon.
A Statement from the Artist:
“These are the ghosts of our moments.” We are the ever-living ghost of what once was.”- Ben Bridwell.     Through this body of work, I engage with found photographs. Already, these objects have a history unknown to me and speak of another’s memory, removed in both time and space. In these photographs, I cover the people with paint, subtracting the specific identity of each person and transforming them into anonymous ghosts for the viewer to project upon. In this way, a private and specific experience becomes an open and shared one through the material addition of paint on the photograph. Through this haunting of the material, the ghosts become us and we become the ghosts.
We become the ghosts of our every day.“

In spots, the group even tap into some old school Ethiopian tezeta vibes, but sped-up and with a hypnotic psych rock edge." - Pitchfork "Theres no way you won’t dance to this...!” - NPR “The music keeps leaping ahead with one surprise after another: guitar parts that align and diverge and reconfigure, drumming that pounces on offbeats. Aura Shards live at Superfresh!
Sat Feb 10th 7:00pm - 10:00pm
Superfresh! Organic Cafe, Main Street, Brattleboro, VT
Aura Shards is a new experimental fusion project based in Brattleboro, Vermont. The group consists of Anders Burrows, primarily on handpan, and Jed Blume, primarily on tabla.
The instrumental music created by this combination of sounds is a blend and balance of Eastern and Western approaches. The tabla, rooted in the Indian classical tradition, has a rich heritage and lineage dating back thousands of years. Tabla are used to lay down complex rhythmic cycles and embellishing accompaniment. Playing melodic lines over these cycles, the handpan (also known as a Hang drum, a recent Swiss invention dating back to the turn of the twenty-first century) is a new age instrument with a crisp tonal timbre that evokes trance-like, ethereal reverberations.
Both of these instruments utilize rhythmic and tonal elements, creating a sound-scape that rivals a full ensemble of instruments. The original compositions of Aura Shards span across genres, and appeal to audiences with a wide variety of musical tastes.

Henrik Munkeby Nørstebø
Thu Feb 8th 7:00pm - 11:00pm
118 Elliot Street, Brattleboro, VT
Innovative Norwegian Composer Creates Enveloping Experience of Unusual Sounds In a rare US appearance, Norwegian composer and performer Henrik Munkeby Nørstebø will perform his highly original music that features deeply moving sounds and silences in complex compositions and improvisations. Born in Trondheim, Norway, Nørstebø chose the trombone and began playing in the local marching band at the age of seven. Not really knowing what he signed up for, 20 years later he is still wrestling with the instrument, using its simplicity as a creative challenge and vehicle to unearth it's seemingly limitless possibilities. Utilizing a wide spectrum of playing techniques, from pure long tones to noise and the almost inaudible, he often works balancing the intuitive with the precisely constructed. Since 2007, Henrik has worked extensively with solo material. His first record (“SOLO”, 2011) contained imaginary and widely different free form improvisations, while his second solo release (“Melting into Foreground”, 2015) was more of a compositional work, focusing on the inner energy of sound and the tension between empty and filled spaces. In his current setup, Nørstebø is utilizing heavy close amplification alongside acoustic elements, producing a multi-faceted body of sound. Having toured actively since 2010, he has played at venues and festivals all over Europe, as well as in Russia, Japan, Taiwan, New Zealand, Australia, USA, Brazil and Argentina. His working projects include the amplified voice and trombone duo BEAM SPLITTER with Audrey Chen, a duo with Austrian sound artist Daniel Lercher, and a trio with drummer Raymond Strid and bassist Nina de Heney. Mr. Nørstebø's set will be preceded by an opening act of local musicians who will also join him following his performance for a series of improvisations. 118 Elliot is a community arts, education and performance space in Downtown Brattleboro.
