Remaining completely still, James glared at the other man. “An unwarranted opinion and frankly unfounded.” He brushed it off, choosing to focus on his next point.

“Very well. How can I help you, young man?” he queried, resting his palms against the counter.

James blinked behind his spectacles. "I'm not the type for theatrics, sir," he responded bluntly. "However, if you're referring to my attention appearing to be elsewhere, I can advise you that I was listening to you. I was searching for your name in my prescription book, but I cannot find it. This may be an oversight from my secretary, but I'm afraid I must ask: was it me you were seeking or my advice?"

“ You really need t’ learn how t’ pay attention, then. People are gonna get real bored of talking t’you if you act like you ignore ‘em. ”

Seamus let out a huff of a sigh. He’d run in for what should have been a quick visit, but was quickly turning out to not be one.

“ You, if you would’a let me ask before going to look me up. ‘M not in your book. ”

“One moment!” James had heard the bell for the front door chime from the back room of his modest little Chemist. His apprentice hadn’t the decency to turn up for work this morning, leaving him alone to complete all of the prescriptions and fill the shelves with medicines they were running low on. When he had decided to leave his home in Oxford to take up the promise of work in Chicago, this was not quite what he had been anticipating. He had trained to be a doctor, not a drug store clerk!

Stepping out from a small doorway in the corner of the shop, James adjusted his white coat and gold rimmed spectacles to observe the person who had entered. “My apologies, sir,” he sighed. “There are simply no excuses for my tardiness this morning. How might I help you?”
