Someone please educate me...

I know what "cosplay" means

but when/how did the term come to be used for homage characters in MMOs? specifically Guild Wars 2?

The only other MMOs I've ever played were Star Wars Galaxies, and City of Heroes, and there were plenty of homage characters seen (except for Marvel characters) in CoH, and never was the term "cosplay" used.

As many of you know (well, some of you), I have a Scarlet Briar that I play a lot, and have spent a whole lot of time, getting her as close to the original as possible as allowed by the character creator (I've used Total Makeover Kits just to change her height by one pixel before just to get her right). And being told "Nice cosplay" is like nails on a chalkboard to me.

Don't get me wrong. I appreciate the complement, but I'd much rather see "Nice Scarlet' or "That's a good rendition" than "cosplay"

Someone in one of the guilds I'm in said I should make Canach. While I don't plan on keeping him in my roster, this popped into my brain pan while in the character creator.

I latched onto Scarlet Briar because the idea of taking a character, writing her as "broken" who had done bad things, making a change and finding redemption with those willing to support the character in its growth, is very appealing to me.

I was today years old when I figured out that Smodur the Unflinching is an illegal character in GW2.

He is an engineer by class, but wears heavy armor.
