Brett couldn’t help the swell of happiness in her chest as she watched Toby scoop Susie up into his arms and the sound of Susie’s laughter as she rubbed her hands on her father’s face. She could remember a few times where she hadn’t been too sure that she would ever get this: true happiness with her little family. But the more she looked at the two, she felt silly for ever thinking Toby could be away from this little girl. The look on his face when he’d first held her was all the proof she needed. He’d been wrapped around her finger from that moment.
Her daughter was the only girl that Brett was more than okay sharing Toby with.
She placed her hand in his as he helped her up from the floor, and then leaned into his kiss. Her eyes slowly fluttered open afterwards and she leaned her head on his chest, one arm wrapping around his waist and the other hand coming up to twist a strand of Susie’s hair behind her ear. She then motioned to the stack of pancakes she’d been ready to eat, “You’d obviously had some success prior to...” Her eyes went up to the ceiling and she couldn’t help but laugh a bit. “I’ll be disappointed when I’m cleaning it later, but right now it’s pretty funny.”
Brett leaned over and pressed a kiss to Susie’s cheek before returning to the stack of pancakes she’d been making herself. “So how much sleep did she get last night?” Brett asked, eyes glancing over at Toby only momentarily. She knew how anxious he was to find out if she’d gotten the wolf gene, and the more restless Susie became, the more Toby worried. Sometimes she’d swear she could see his hair turning grey.
Finally, she grabbed her fork and cut off a slice of her stack of flapjacks and popped it into her mouth, smiling happily. “You know as much as I dislike waking up without you in bed, I do love not having to make breakfast,” she joked with a laugh. “Though maybe I should start waking up earlier so I don’t miss all the meat,” she said, fork motioning vaguely in the direction of the greasy plates that sat empty and taunting her.

The corner of his eye was almost always glued to the ceiling from the very moment Brett walked in, and while he had wanted to make every bullshit excuse in the book to get her to leave the room again, everything just started happening in slow motion: the way Brett began to walk directly under it, the edges of the pancake slowly ungluing from the ceiling, and finally….. the fall. Right on top of her head.
Susie started cackling all over again. She was so Belfront that it hurt sometimes.
“Oh shit,” Toby spoke aloud once again, wide-eyed as he waited for his beautiful girlfriend’s reaction to what could only be described as a classic Belfront debacle. As it turned out, her reaction appeared to be to smush the batter all over his face. That was much better than her disappointed look.
“Oh-ho-ho no,” Toby whipped around to grab the bowl of batter, turning back to see them duck under the island, a screaming toddler running back out a second later with her hands raised. “Aaagh, pancake monster!” Considering the fact that his daughter was literally the size of a lawn gnome and he could knock her over with a puff of breath, Toby bent over to snatch her up as she ran at him, her pancake-covered fingers going straight for his face as she rubbed the batter on his cheeks and up into his hair so she could get her revenge on daddy being an idiot.
The shit he put up with when it came to his kid.
“Ohm nom,” Toby popped his lips to her fingers before moving to give her butterfly kisses to her face, rubbing off a bit of batter onto her as well. “Alright, Susie Q, we better stay out of the batter before daddy has to clean up an even bigger mess, huh?” he asked her, quirking a brow as she just grinned cheekily as she sat in his arms, her fingers going up to her mouth so she could lick them free of the batter. “Aaaaand now you need another bath. But lets go apologize to mommy for making her wear her breakfast as a hat, first, huh?”
As the father-daughter duo rounded the corner, Toby reached a free hand down to her with a smirk, pulling her back up to stand beside them before leaning over to give her another kiss. “Sorry, mommy,” he mumbled against her lips, unable to keep from smiling. “Next time I’ll practice using something that isn’t food before trying that again.”

There were worse things to wake up to than your daughter’s laughter. Brett blinked a few times, hand absentmindedly stretching across the bed in search of Toby - even if somewhere in her sleepy brain she knew he’d be up with Susie. Frowning just a bit, Brett brought her hand back and scratched at her head through the mess of rose gold mess she called hair. She stretched out and smiled to the sound of her daughter continuing to cackle. Deciding she was missing out on the fun, she tossed the covers off of her and put her feet to the floor.
“Toby?” she cooed, hands rubbing at her eyes as she shuffled into the kitchen, a yawn taking over her just before turning the corner to where the mess was unfolding. She blinked a few times, a smile coming to her lips as the man of her dreams cleared the space between them and pressed a kiss to her lips. “Morning, handsome,” she smiled up at him before turning her attention to the stack of pancakes awaiting her. She could feel her stomach pulling her towards them. “Mmmm this looks delicious!” she said, walking over to where Susie sat at the table.
“Good morning love bug,” she said, leaning down and pressing kisses all over the smaller blonde’s face, causing the giggle to sound again. Which reminded Brett of why she’d woke in the first place. “What has little miss been cracking up about, daddy?” she asked Toby with a raised brow as she walked back to the island and started forking a few pancakes onto a plate. “I’m sure daddy did something, didn’t he, Susie-pie?” she said, turning to the fridge to grab the butter but as she did, something came down atop her head and then promptly flopped onto the ground.
Susie began cackling again, and Brett glanced down to see what was a pancake on the floor. Without a word, she glanced up to see a bit of batter on the ceiling, and then raised a hand to wipe away some that had stuck in her nest of blush hair. “Toby?” she asked, one brow raised as she turned to look at him. He needn’t say anything, she already knew. Brett rubbed off some more of the batter that had come off on her forehead and then walked towards Toby.
She saw the recognition in his eyes, and a devious smile came to her lips as he pace quickened. Just as he turned to dart away, she leapt up on his back and smeared the batter across his cheek and nose, giggling right in tune with their daughter. She then raised her hand triumphantly, “I got him, Susie!” She quickly dropped down off his back and retreated, grabbing Susie up from her seat and ducking down behind the island, using it as a shield between them and Toby.
She watched with utter pride as Susie leaned over and smeared her hands in the mashed pancake on the floor before looking to her mother as if for approval. She nodded, “Go get him!” Susie grinned and took off around the island towards her father, batter-covered hands raised out towards him as she mumbled out, “Here come, Daddy!”
Brett leaned out from behind the island to watch, a smile brighter than the sun on her face. She loved her life more and more each day.

Fatherhood had been pretty good to Toby thus far, despite the claims of very many who knew the Belfronts. Since Susie’s birth, he had only accidentally locked her in a car once, accidentally forgot to babygate the doggy door only a handful of times, and then there had been that one rather eventful time back in Oxford when he had let Claire and Cal watch her for like, twenty minutes tops and he had come back to find his teething toddler chewing on the rubbery end of a giant dick. “What, Tobias? It’s brand new, don’t be such a prude.” But despite all of these very minor bumps in the road of fatherhood, he had Brett by his side the entire way. Well, sometimes. Toby and Susie were currently on the same ~sleep schedule – not by choice, of course. Every day it was starting to seem more and more like Susie was going to end up shifting on the full moon, and Toby was pretty fine with that shift coming later rather than sooner. Still, her restlessness during the week prior to the full moon wasn’t something he took for granted. It might have only been 5 a.m. but how was Toby just supposed to ignore that face? Of course, this also meant that they were usually pretty hungry at the same time, too. Susie sat diligently at the kitchen table, a pink crayon in hand as she drew a picture of mommy while Toby concentrated on pancakes. Pancakes was a total dad thing, right? His dad used to flip the pancake over in the air, flawlessly, every single damn time. He probably should have picked that trait up. It was absolutely a goal of his to strive to be the parent his daughter favored more. Brett might have done the whole ‘hot pink fairy princess’ thing but Toby was going to flip a damn pancake and his daughter would like it! “Heeeey, Susie,” Toby turned away from the stove to face her, pan in hand, shaking it back and forth as he prepped to toss the pancake. Susie’s blue eyes looked up from piece of paper, almost as if to say 'What the fuck, Daddy?’ What the fuck, indeed. “I’m gonna flip your pancake, check this out, kiddo.” Be it severe overconfidence, brute-force werewolf strength, stupidity, or maybe a mix of all three – one moment the pancake was prepped for take-off and the next……. Susie’s cackle of delight was may more Belfront than it should have been. “Shit,” he muttered, setting the pan back on the stove and quickly reaching over to shut it off. “Sh shh shh,” he attempted to calm Susie’s hysterical laughter down, his eyes flitting between her and the ceiling, where there was a very stuck pancake caked to it. “Shhh, Susie, don’t wake mommy!” He was just about to grab a chair from the table to stand on so he could get it down when an adorably gravely voice came from around the corner, followed by the soft steps of Brett’s adorably bare feet across the wood floor. “Too late.” Brett was so sweet in the mornings. Well, okay, she was so sweet all of the time but especially in the mornings where her still-pink hair was a mess and one of her cheeks still had the faint outlines of her face scrunched into their pillows and her stupid silky pajama shorts with the weiner dogs printed on them were much cuter on their bedroom floor but Susie picked them out and this was his family and he loved them both so much and they were the most precious things in the world to him… and he had gotten a pancake stuck to their ceiling. Brett was still trying to get over (but still lowkey bitter) about Jackson and Toby accidentally sitting on their pizza and staining the couch. “Hey,” he greeted with a smile, almost breathless as he walked over to give her a kiss. “Morning. I made pancakes and bacon, but Susie and I already ate all the bacon, so I tried to make you a heart shaped pancake instead but it came out kind of looking like a gimpy butterfly…” Also, he didn’t just toss a pancake on the ceiling.
