I had a blast talking shop with digital illustration students at the FutureReady Teens program from MCAD Continuing Ed this weekend — big thanks to John Barlow for inviting me as a guest speaker!
I shared how experimenting with traditional media and printmaking has changed my approach to digital illustration. For example, this silkscreen-inspired illustration for the Star Tribune was created using just blue, pink, and yellow — my brain loves constraints, deadlines, and limited palettes!
Things are shaping up for this year’s Grumpy Bert Red Envelope Show 🐉 Here’s a super-rough preliminary sketch for my contribution, the opening event is at Harman Projects in NYC this Saturday!
Today’s the start of the Skijor Loppet here in Minneapolis! 🎿🐶❄️🐾 This sketch was inspired by the team effort of my partner and pooch in last year’s events, best of luck to all the dogs and skiers out there this weekend!
My copy of the new American Illustration annual has arrived! It’s always a trip to see my work alongside so many incredible illustrators and in such a beautiful book (love this cover by Lauren Tamaki & George McCalman 💐) — Big thanks to this year’s jury & AI-AP director Mark Heflin!
“Plant Parenthood” for The InQueery, art direction by Greg Kozatek 🪴
My thumbnail sketches only look “clear” because they’re actually my second draft! Here’s a peek behind the curtain at all the drawings I don’t normally show 🙃
My rougher brainstorming sketches are confusing even for me, so I always redraw my favorite ideas for legibility before sending them to my art director. The act of choosing which ideas are worth redrawing serves as the first round of editing in my otherwise messy iterative illustration process.
