Remembering the first time my sister got the chance to vote lol
A Voting Short Story
“Mom! I got my ballot!”
It’s my first time voting. I don’t know if I’d consider it lucky that my year of adulthood happened to fall on an election year, but it’s definitely interesting. To make things more interesting, my year of adulthood also happened to fall on the year of a pandemic. Since the virus is preventing everyone from leaving their house, the government went ahead and sent everyone mail-in ballots.
“Well, I’d open it now. There are always things on the ballot you don’t expect. You’re gonna want to study up a bit,” she calls from the kitchen. Her voice is wavering a little bit, but I don’t think much of it.
I shimmy my finger under the soft glue and peel the flap back. As I do so, I see a messily scribbled “18” on the manila paper - cool, one just for me. There’s less in the envelope than I expected - just a half sheet of paper. I pull it out, eyebrows furrowed, and flip it to read:
Thank you for participating in the democratic system of the United States of America. As this is your first time voting as an adult, there are three facts that must be revealed to you:
The United States of America officially acts as democracy, but the Reagan administration created legislation that allows it to act as an authoritarian state.
You will find one candidate on this ballot. They are your only option in this election.
This has been the standard mode of political participation in the United States of America since 1984 and has been kept from minors until they enter adulthood.
We understand that this may be a shock to you, and we encourage you to discuss this with a trusted adult. Please comply in filling out this ballot form and returning it to the voting commission in your district.

I choose not to stick onto your words
Not even your promises to me.
Always asking myself, what do we have in the first place?
We're just random strangers who met by chance.
