Time Travel Fic Recs Featuring Romy
Welcome to this year’s addition to my Romy Fanfic Rec Collection. I was inspired by the ‘Time Loop’ prompt, though I decided to expand it to cover 'Time Travel' in general. @angel-gidget designed the lovely banner. Thanks Gidge. <3
And now, I hope you enjoy a few of my favorite time travel fics featuring Rogue and Gambit.

Fic Summaries and Notes Below the Cut:
Betrayal by Valerie J [ff.net]
Rating: T | Universe: X-Men: Comics | Words: 77,333 | Chapters: 25 | Status: Complete | Date: Oct 10, 2001-Jan 20, 2002 |
Summary: [Complete] When Bishop first joined the X-Men, he warned them that they would be betrayed by one of their own. He was right, but that’s only the beginning of the story. (This story diverges from continuity just after X-Men #45.)
Notes: There is so much story potential in the relationship between Bishop and the Witness. Bring that to the present and you get a fascinating story which touches on so much more than time travel. Relationships are tested, secrets are revealed, and choices are made. This is an excellent fic is the start of a trilogy which is well worth the read.
Call Back Yesterday by xenokattz ( @xenokattz ) [ao3]
Rating: T | Universe: X-Men: Movies | Words: 17,605 | Chapters: 7 | Status: Complete | Date: May 28-29, 2012 |
Summary: After 2005, the world went to shit. That was Logan’s summary. Global climate change. All the TVs were rectangular and thin. All the cars were purportedly powered by electricity. The music sucked. Network explained events with more detail, but the gist of it was after 2005, the world went to shit. And Remy had to fix it before he could go home to good old 1993.
Notes: This story sticks with me long after I finished reading. While there is something melancholic and bittersweet about it, the fic offers a compelling story of love, community, and saving the world. There’s a figurative ticking clock which keeps you reading right up to the last moment. And, it’s the perfect length that you might find yourself looping around and reading it again after you finish.
The Chase by Chellerbelle ( @chellerbelles ) [ao3] [ff.net]
Rating: T | Universe: WatX | Words: 43,867 | Chapters: 11 | Status: Complete | Date: Jun 7-27, 2012 |
Summary:  In the Present, Gambit tries to auction off Emma Frost’s diamond hand and finds himself caught between the X-men and Sinister’s Marauders. 20 Years in the Future, Professor Xavier seeks to save his X-men from being murdered in the past by the marauders, and prevent the Age of Apocalypse from ever happening.
Notes: I love the complicated timey-wimey nature of this story. Chelle manages to not only juggle one or two times lines, but plays out a half dozen or so various timelines in over a dozen time frames. And, she makes excellent use of the time travel elements and shows what happens to the future when you use foreknowledge to change your present.
But Here We Are by AppleJ ( @applejacks1552 ) [ao3]
Rating: M | Universe: X-Men: Comics | Words: 32,978 | Chapters: 30 | Status: Complete | Date: Feb 24, 2019 |
Summary: They never thought this would be possible, but Rogue is uneXpectedly eXpecting. Yet nothing is ever THAT simple in the life of an X-Man. What secret will Gambit discover that complicates their happily-ever-after?
Notes: This is one of those fics you find yourself asking, where's the time travel. And then, it shows up and it is such an important element of the story. It really grabs you as Rogue and Gambit are facing upcoming parenthood--and for anyone who knows the the X-Men, then you know that there are no certainities when it comes to being an X-Man and a parent.
Converging by AnaExpert (Ana Xpert) ( @anaxpert-blog ) [ao3] [ff.net]
Rating: M | Universe: X-Men: Comics | Words: 43,369 | Chapters: 15 | Status: Complete | Date: Jun 4, 2017-Sep 3, 2020 |
Summary: Rogue seems happy with her new life, or is she? Gambit is finally showing signs of moving on from her. Living separate lives, but forever in each other’s hearts. An old buried secret is revealed and it completely changes everything. Expect sex, drama, angst and plot twists.
Note: What if you had the ability to change a painful incident from the past? Would you take the opportunity? This fic grapples with that question along with other complications of what happens to your present when you change the past.
Note.2: The ff.net version may be slightly easier to read. The story has multi-character POV and will change POV within the chapters. The formatting which signifies change of POV didn’t always get transferred over to ao3, so it can take a moment to note the change in POV. POVs are separated in ff.net.
Chapter 13 - Day 12: Out of Sight, Out of Time of Fourteen Ways to Fall for You by lettersfromnowhere ( @lettersfromn0where ) [Ch 13] [ao3]
Rating: G | Universe: X-Men | Words: 2,256 (31,446) | Chapters: 14 | Status: Complete | Date: Jun 24-Aug 5, 2019 |
Summary: Day 12: because there TOTALLY isn’t enough time travel in the X-Men universe as is! (A time travel AU)
Note: This fic is a lot of fun. There's a framing sequence not only at the beginning and end of the story, but each chapter as well. Aliens want to know if soulmates are real, so they kidnap Rogue and Gambit and put them through a myriad of fanfic tropes. And when it comes to time travel, this chapter hits all the right points you want in a across time romance in a bite size package.
Pearls of Wisdom by chitane ( @unleash-hell-little-one ) [ao3] [ff.net]
Rating: T | Universe: X-Men | Words: 4,838 | Chapters: 3 | Status: WIP | Date: Feb 26-Mar 20, 2021 |
Summary: After a mishap with one of Forge’s latest science projects, Rogue somehow finds herself 12 years into the past. AU Time Travel.
Notes: I would love to see this fic continue. I want to know what happens. Rogue is in a position where she knows how things are supposed to play out, but doesn't *know* what it was actually like.
A More Perfect World by DemonaHw ( @demonahw ) [ao3]
Rating: T | Universe: XtAS/’97 | Words: 4,797 | Chapters: 2 | Status: WIP | Date: Jun 11, 2024-Jan 8, 2025 |
Summary: Newly arrived with the X-men, Remy LeBeau was growing accustomed to dying. Each time he did he woke up back in his bead on the morning of April 10th. But he could deal with that: he’d seen Groundhog Day and it wasn’t as if he had any plans. But he was starting to realise that
Notes: Yay! A time loop story at last. And, another story I really want to see continue. The novelty of living forever without consequences loses its appeal after a time, and the consequences of repeatedly dying remains even when the death doesn't. The fic really gives the reader something to think about.

The other night husband and I were watching a documentary about the yeti where they were doing DNA analysis of samples of supposed yeti fur, and every one of them came back as bears.
Anyway, the next night we watched a thing about some pig man who is supposed to live in Vermont. People said it had claws and a pig nose but walked upright like a man. Now, I happen to know that sideshows used to shave bears and present them as pig men. So every piece of evidence they gave of this monster sounds to me like a bear with mange.
So now the running joke in our house is that everything is bears. Aliens? Bears. Loch Ness monster? Bear. Every cryptozoological mystery is just a very crafty bear.
Bears. They’re everywhere. Be wary. Anyone or anything could be a bear.

12. Don't have curtains? No stress.
Cardboard blocks beautifully
If you want light, tape newspaper to the window for a golden glow.
It makes a huge difference
If buying curtains, get sunblocking
...
Buying a fan? Misting fans are the best as they spray water into the fan, cooling the breeze. If you don't have that, try a bowl of water in front or a wet cloth over.
...
Heat stroke can kill you. My husband spent 4 hours and 3 bags of drip in hospital.
....
Sun burnt?
Use aloe vera gel. It smoothes and removes heat
Have a Luke warm shower
Beware of other creams. They dan lock in the heat.
Peeling skin is ugg but okay. Actual burn, go straight to the doctor
.....
Icy poles are a great way to hydrate and you can buy rehydration icy poles.
Grapes and watermelon make you feel good too. So much water
For all of the northerners that stood up for Texas during our freeze and said, "Don't make fun of them, they've never dealt with this before. Their infrastructure isn't made for snow and freezing."
This one is for you.
Where I live 108°F with 80% humidity with no wind is normal.
Pacific North West is dealing historic best waves 35-40°C or 95-105°F.
First of all. Don't make fun of them for bitching about the heat. Just like Texas isn't built for a freeze and our pipes burst, Pacific North West isn't built for heat and a lot of their homes don't have AC.
If you live somewhere with a high humidity like 80+ HUMIDITY IS NOT YOUR FRIEND. The "humidity makes it feel cooler" is a lie once it gets beyond a point.
If you live somewhere with a lower humidity, misters are nice to cool off outside.
Once you get over 90°F (32°C) a fan will not help you. It's just pushing around hot air. (I mean if you can't afford a small AC unit because they're expensive as hell, by all means a fan is better than nothing).
If you have pets, those portable AC units aren't safe. If your pets destroy the outtake thing, it'll leak CO2. Window units are safer.
Window AC units will let mosquitoes or other small bugs in. Sucks, but that's life.
Now is not the time to me modest. If you have to cover for religious reasons, by all means. If you don't, I've seen people wear short shorts and a swim top. It's not trashy if it keeps you from getting heat stroke.
If you do have to cover up for religious reasons, look for elephant pants or something similar. They're made with a breathable material.
Shade is better than no shade, but that shit it just diet sun after some point. Don't think shade will save you from heat stroke.
I know the "drink your water" is a fun meme now, but if you're sweating excessively you need electrolytes. Drink Gatorade, Powerade, or Pedialite PLEASE. I don't care if you're fucking sitting in one spot all day. That shit WILL save you from heat stroke.
Most importantly. RESEARCH THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HEAT STROKE AND HEAT EXHAUSTION PLEASE!
If you're diabetic and can't drink Gatorade, mix water, fruit juice, and either lite salt or pink salt
If you can afford it, cover windows with thick curtains to insulate the house
If you have tile floors, lay on them with skin to tile contact. If you don't, laying your head on cool counters works too.
If the temperature where you're at is hotter than your body temperature, don't wear heat wicking clothing. Moisture wicking is safe though.
Check your medication labels. Many make you more susceptible to sun and heat
-Room temperature water will get into your body faster. This is something I learned doing marching band in high summer in Georgia, and it saved all of our asses. Sip it, don't gulp it, especially if you're getting into the red; same goes for whatever fluid you're drinking. And just in general drink during the day.
-If you are moving from an air conditioned space to an un-air conditioned space, if at all possible try to make the shift gradual. When my dad and I were working outside and in un-ac houses a few years ago, he'd turn the air down to low in the truck about ten-fifteen minutes before we got where we were going. This way your body doesn't go from low low temps to high temps. S'bad for you.
-If you can, keep your lights off during the day. Light bulbs may not generate a lot of heat, but the difference is noticeable when it gets hot enough. I literally only turn my bedroom light on in the evening when it gets too dark.
Don't be afraid to just like... pour water on yourself if you need to. The evaporation will cool you off.
Put your hand to the cement for 15 seconds. If you can't handle the heat, it'll burn your dog's paws. Don't let them walk on it.
Dogs with flat faces are more prone to heat stroke. Don't leave them out unsupervised.
Frozen fruit is delicious in water.
Wet/Cold hat/handkerchief on your head/neck will help you stay cool.
Pickle juice is great for electrolytes! You can even make pickle juice Popsicles!
Heat exhaustion is more, "drink water and get you cooled off." Heat stroke is more "Oh my god call 911."

[Image description: an infographic showing the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke. The graphic is labeled "Heat Dangers: First Warning." Signs of heat exhaustion: faint or dizzy, excessive sweating, cool, pale, clammy skin, rapid, weak pulse, muscle cramps. If you think you or someone else may be experiencing heat exhaustion, get to a cool, air-conditioned place, drink water if conscious, and take a cool shower or use cold compress. Signs of heat stroke: throbbing headache, no sweating, red, hot, dry skin, rapid, strong pulse, may lose consciousness. If you think you or someone else may be experiencing heat stroke, call 911. End description]
Be safe.

My silly little queer game about lesbians getting involved in ancient feuds between old gods is finally launching! On the 24th!
It's really REALLY choice driven - multiple endings and paths through the story, if you get into the lore you'll be playing it again and again.
AND it's super queer!
You can wishlist it here and there's a intro demo for it there too :)
https://store.steampowered.com/app/3100650/Quantum_Witch/
edit: WOW FOLKS! You have made an INCREDIBLE difference over the past few days!! We have a real chance of hitting the magic 7500 wishlists that it takes for steam to actually care about showing the game to people!
So if that happens before launch, I'll donate the first £1000 of sales to Mermaids, a charity here in the UK that helps trans kids.
Seriously, you've made this big ol' gay gal making this from her back bedroom do a little happy cry.

If you want proof of said hole. In Western Australia the sun is harsh and you can get a sunburn in under 10 minutes
In the eastern states, the sun is gentle and sunburn takes up to a hour.
Our ozone layer is thinner in the west and it makes a huge difference
And yeah, its not as bad now as it was when I was a kid

The Justin Hammer of the real world
I should maybe make an effort post about it but I think Tumblr would be really amused to hear about the whole Sig P320 fiasco. Where the handgun that replaced the Beretta M9 in military service is just randomly going off for no reason, cops all over the country are banning it from duty, and the company that makes it posted a bizarre message about it on Twitter that desperately tries to hide behind the shield of vague online conservative culture. They ultimately changed the manual to say you shouldn't carry it loaded after getting involved in at least one wrongful death lawsuit over this issue. The other thing that's interesting is SIG only won the contract because they offered an insanely low per-unit cost, just around $200, so they skipped the actual trials that would compare its durability and performance to a competing Glock design, and would catch if it did something like going off completely randomly.
This is also the company that developed the XM7, which is a horrific clusterfuck of a rifle that itself is having bizarre issues. Initially the issue was that the barrels could be pushed around, causing the first shot in a string to be off-zero. Now the barrels are getting insane wear within a couple thousand rounds because the cartridge is so high-pressure and fucking stupid. And the whole idea about this cartridge was to be able to penetrate armor that no other nation in the world currently fields, by firing armor piercing bullets that cost $20 per round. For some reason the army thinks this should be the new service rifle. It is basically going back to an idea that led to the shortest-lived service rifle the US has ever used, because it was so heavy and had so much recoil and sucked so much. This is because the army is still trying to win their invasion of Afghanistan, as this kind of rifle would have been really handy there.
Everything is the F-35 program now. It's all corruption and bribery. SIG has won every contract they've entered over the last few years, even for shit they've never made and don't even produce themselves, like scopes. This is what the final stages of the American Imperial Military-Industrial Complex look like.

Things I never knew
Okay, another little lesson for fic writers since I see it come up sometimes in fics: wine in restaurants.
When you buy a bottle of wine in a (nicer) restaurant, generally (please note my emphasis there, this is a generalization for most restaurants, but not all restaurants, especially non-US ones) you may see a waiter do a few things when they bring you the bottle.
The waiter presents the bottle to the person who ordered it
The waiter uncorks the bottle in order to serve it
The waiter hands the cork to the person who ordered the bottle
The waiter pours a small portion of the wine (barely a splash) and waits for the person who ordered it to taste it
The waiter then pours glasses for everyone else at the table, and then returns to fill up the initial taster's glass
Now, you might be thinking -- that's all pretty obvious, right? They're bringing you what you ordered, making sure you liked it, and then pouring it for the group. Wrong. It's actually a little bit more complicated than that.
The waiter presents the bottle to the person who ordered it so that they can inspect the label and vintage and make sure it's the bottle they actually ordered off the menu
The waiter uncorks the bottle so that the table can see it was unopened before this moment (i.e., not another wine they poured into an empty bottle) and well-sealed
The waiter hands the cork to the person who ordered the bottle so that they can inspect the label on the cork and determine if it matches up; they can also smell/feel the cork to see if there is any dergradation or mold that might impact the wine itself
The waiter pours a small portion for the person who ordered to taste NOT to see if they liked it -- that's a common misconception. Yes, sometimes when house wine is served by the glass, waiters will pour a portion for people to taste and agree to. But when you order a bottle, the taste isn't for approval -- you've already bought the bottle at this point! You don't get to refuse it if you don't like it. Rather, the tasting is to determine if the wine is "corked", a term that refers to when a wine is contaminated by TCA, a chemical compound that causes a specific taste/flavor. TCA can be caused by mold in corks, and is one of the only reasons you can (generally) refuse a bottle of wine you have already purchased. Most people can taste or smell TCA if they are trained for it; other people might drink the wine for a few minutes before noticing a damp, basement-like smell on the aftertaste. Once you've tasted it, you'll remember it. That first sip is your opportunity to take one for the table and save them from a possibly corked bottle of wine, which is absolutely no fun.
If you've sipped the wine (I generally smell it, I've found it's easier to smell than taste) and determined that it is safe, you then nod to your waiter. The waiter will then pour glasses for everyone else at the table. If the wine is corked, you would refuse the bottle and ask the waiter for a new bottle. If there is no new bottle, you'll either get a refund or they'll ask you to choose another option on their wine list. A good restaurant will understand that corked bottles happen randomly, and will leap at the opportunity to replace it; a bad restaurant or a restaurant with poor training will sometimes try to argue with you about whether or not it's corked. Again, it can be a subtle, subjective taste, so proceed carefully.
In restaurants, this process can happen very quickly! It's elegant and practiced. The waiter will generally uncork the bottle without setting the bottle down or bracing it against themselves. They will remove the cork without breaking it, and they will pour the wine without dripping it down the label or on the table.

Warning. Stillbirth story.
My neighbour just came to me for a hug. She had been gone for a few days and I was so excited. She was 38 weeks pregnant and her being away means new baby. Except. No. No.no it tragically does not
Her baby died. She never got to meet him. She noticed movement was down and went to hospital. And they placed the tabs onto her and...no heart beat.
They induced. He was born in 18 minutes.
They cuddled him for as long as they could. A kind group of people make sure stillbirth families had the best photographs with their babies. They provide clothes and toys and a lovely basket. The government will pay her 22 weeks of leave.
Her umbilical cord was unusually long. It wrapped twice around his neck and a foot. It had two knots in it. Henry had no chance.
But it's not fair and I am so so heartbroken. They were so excited. They had delibrately not learnt the gender. It was ro be a surprise. They wanted him so much.
And she is just hanging by a thread. They still need to tell the two older kids. And the family. And their friends.
My baby is 7 months old. I feel so sad I have her and my neighbour's Henry is not here too. They would have grown up friends together
