Portrait of James Barnes #2 (c. 1934)
Depicted here is a restored version of a sketch done by Steve Rogers while he was just sixteen. Presumably, Rogers drew his best friend naked out of boyish humor, and scratched it out to protect his privacy. This shows that the kinship and trust that Barnes had for Rogers went way back to their childhood. The powerful yet graceful pose is reminiscient of Hellenistic statues, which could have been an inspiration for Rogers.
In the periphery of the drawing are some scribbles that seem like practice sketches for Barnes' eyes as well as pencil tests. There are multiple stains on the book in overall, including blood and ink.

Prospect Park (c. 1934)
This is one of Cpt. Rogers' earliest rendition of Prospect Park in Brooklyn, New York City. Many of Rogers' sketchbooks feature local scenes, such as this sketch, or even local residents. This particular drawing can be found deep within the sketchbook and is surrounded by numbers and other scribbles. The other half of the page has dark lines as if Rogers was trying to scribble out a drawing. That drawing is still undergoing restoration in our offices. This newly recovered drawing has sustained numerous levels of damage due to poor preservation. Whether the poor preservation is from Rogers himself or thanks to his former neighbor's technique is up for debate. This sketchbook was found at the bottom of the stack with the covers nearly ripped off due to friction. With some examination, some dark stains on the cover, along with various pages, are from blood, as if from a bleeding nose.

Portrait Of James Barnes (c. 1938)
This is the first page of a sketchbook preserved by one of Cpt. Rogers' former neighbors. Most of the works in this book were produced in the years 1938-39, and it can be noted that the subject of Sgt. Barnes has been prolific in its pages. While Rogers seemed to have a habit of scribbling lists, budgeting and smaller unfinished sketches around most of his works, he has left a few pages to the sole occupancy of portraits like this one. It is evident that Cpt. Rogers held a deep fraternal affection for his then-roommate Sgt. Barnes. Having grown up together like brothers, there is a bond that we see in these pages that followed them into the very jaws of death in the battlefield.
