When Sinners said "white people have oppressed aspects of other white people's culture but that does NOT give you the right to enter Black people's spaces just because you want to"

there's something to be said about movies like kpop demon hunters, turning red, encanto, over the moon, and sinners, which combine music and cultural specificity into engaging storytelling. you don't need to just take "inspiration" from a culture. you can tell a specific story about it that everyone will be able to relate to even if they are unfamiliar with the specifics, because there are human elements we can all relate to in well-told stories.

remmick and the vampires present a false dichotomy
Hogwood (the man who sold the twins the mill) and the KKK are very obviously bad, they are outright malicious bigotry, they use the n-word and plan to lynch the moore's and their community, they are so blatantly racist and hateful it's unavoidably obvious
remmick and the vampires however say that they believe in equality, say that they want to create a community, and yet remmick's goal throught the movie is to both metaphorically and literally steal sammie's ability for his own goal of reconnecting with his irish ancestors, a white man wants to harm a young and upcoming black man and use talents for his own goals without giving any regard to said black man's autonomy or agency
when sammie sings 'I lied to you' in the juke joint and calls forth the spirits from the past and future, it's a blend of cultures; west african, east asian, native american, and african american song and dance blend together across time and space to tell the stories of blues; where it takes its inspiration from, the music genres it then inspired, the complex history of black american culture and its intersections with other peoples of colour in the USA
when remmick and the vampires kill and turn the people in the juke joint, and then perform rocky road to dublin, only remmick's irish culture is on display, there is no influence from the black and asian people he has forcibly assimilated into his song, it's juxtaposition with the earlier scene is blatant, remmick is more than happy to assimilate people of colour into his 'community' of 'equals', and yet its only whiteness that is celebrated, that is normative
remmick claims that he's doing people a favour by turning them immortal, conviently ignoring that he literally has to suck the life out of them to do so, trapping their spirits on earth, he claims that he's the good guy, that the KKK were gonna come and lynch everyone at the joint in the morning anyways, conviently ignoring that he's doing the exact same thing; a white man leading a mob to kill a bunch of black people
in the final confrontation with sammie remmick repeatedly dunks him into the river, a forceful baptism. both the celtic irish and enslaved west africans had their religions suppressed and destroyed by colonialsm, had christianity forced upon them by the british empire, and in that scene we see remmick repeating that cycle, using christianity to inflict harm, and sammie reclaiming christianity, despite all the complex emotions he has arround it, as many colonised peoples have and still do, when he recites the lord's prayer
remmick and the vampires are no less racist than hogwood and the KKK, are no less predatory or evil, they're just less blantant about their bigotry, they represent the system, the normalised white supremacy that is seeped into the very foundation of culture in america, the point isnt that remmick would call any of the black characters in the movie the n-word, i dont think he would, the point is that his exploitation and desacration and inserting-himself-into-when-he-wasn't-invited of the juke joint is a microcosm of what white people have done to black american arts and culture since ever since there have been black and white people in america, and even before that
theres a reason vultures are shown early on in this movie

Marigolds, an endless array of food, chaos and love aren’t the only reasons why Monsoon Wedding by Mira Nair is one of the best films ever!!
We get to be privy to different kinds of relationships during the never-ending prep for the big fat Indian wedding; both old and new. This isn’t a review tbh. I am just sharing my thoughts on something I particularly appreciated in the movie. tw: child abuse/SA
There is a scene in the climax when Lalit (Naseeruddin Shah) kisses Ria’s (Shefali Shah) forehead right after he has asked Tej (Rajat Kapoor) to leave speaks a thousand words. Ria knows that she has an adult/father figure who will protect her no matter what, listen to what she has to say and love her for who she is.
He says , “ I will protect my children from myself if I have to.” In our homes, where most of the time we are shushed and asked to adjust to the comments, the touches or teasing of our own family members, relatives or friends, Lalit taking a step to break that cycle is truly poignant.
I am just sad it took me this long to watch this piece of art🫶🏽

The poetry of Fleabag's S1E4 the women's therapy being silence and getting scolded like school girls for breaking it and cleaning the floor and the men's therapy being screaming "SLUT" at a woman shaped mannequin then patting each other on the back for a job well done and calling each other "good men"

can we please talk about woman of the hour because holy shitt oh my god dude. its actually so good and not even in the sense i was expecting it to be like i originally didnt wanna watch it bc i dont love indulging in serial killer media that can romanticize it but this wow. it does not do that at all like watching anna kendricks snippet of her interview with stephen colbert fr convinced me oh she gets it and well she really does. so many details down the the way its written wiith the back and forth and the way its shot really emphasizing the abuse women have to deal with. and the very first shot isnt even of this fucking guy its of one of his victims but it's thru a camera lens a literal objectifying lens. "people dont want to be seen, stop performing" *sheryl nods, like an authority figure is speaking to her* all the different ways women have to make themselves feel small at the sake of a man to ensure their safety and protection. when sarah experiences a very weird, very dangerous, gesture she laughs it off awkwardly because what else is she to do? that shot with just her in the frame head on clearly contemplating the truth of her situation figuring out if its worth it to even try and run. cut to a scene of sheryl doing something very similar but shes not in danger, right? but she sleeps with him anyway. laura no one is going to believe you not even your boyfriend are u really sure its the same guy you have to be 100% certain sure honey just wait right here ill get the studio exec for you since the cops didnt do anything oh yeah the guard at the desk sorry yeah hes such an asshole right? the men encroaching in the frame of the women make urself small no one's going to believe you he's not taking the hint just leave just leave im so stupid for letting him in everythings a risk, i don't date much haha, oh that's just la, dear. it's okay, baby, i'm just so embarrassed, don't look don't look believe me believe me okay now run. "stop performing" because to perform is to survive and sheryl doesn't want to survive she just wants to live.

cuties, I will die with this fandom happily if it means these two psychopaths are together :(
Post-fall Hannigram needs to be Will running up to Hannibal snapping this photo and then sending it to Jack for no reason but to tease him.
Tumblr media
Like just every year on the anniversary of their fall he gets a post card:

The year Will sends this Jack retires:

ok, so I am watching season 2 of heartstopper for the first time (I like to take long breaks between shows, don’t ask) and I LOVE how it reminds of why I loved the story in the first place. It is comfort personified. Like how can a piece of art constantly create a fuzzy feeling in your heart??? I think it’s also because I see the characters in the show as my kids maybe? I am literally in my early twenties but THESE ARE MY KIDS, MY CHILDREN YOU KNOW? And I want to protect them with all my might and watch as they figure out stuff for themselves and make mistakes and cry with them.
And we know how difficult high school is too! Everything you feel and experience is so much more magnified and powerful. I keep thinking how brave so many of these kids are and it makes me so sad that they need to be so much and do so much when they are literally babies :( It is so much more real. And then I proceed to go down a spiral where I think about my school mates and the sort of stress they might have experienced related to coming out or just accepting something. And I wish I could just give them a big fucking hug because what kid deserves that? Screw any one who thinks that because ultimately love is love and anybody who shames children or adults for that matter about their sexuality or gender identity deserve a special place in hell!! Seriously, if any one needs a shoulder to lean on or talk I AM HERE in whatever way because nobody should have to go through that alone :(
I will be back with more thoughts and feelings but all of you babies DESERVE THE BIGGEST HUG💗🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️🌈

I just watched Exhuma and it's so unique for a horror movie. The scary factor came purely from the acting and direction and didn't rely on cheap jumpscares or scary props. That samurai/ghoul looked disgusting and not scary but it still worked.
It's about colonialism though, isn't it? The metaphors were so lovely I could weep. When Hwa-rim yelled at the Japanese spirit: “It’s my land.”
And the whole thing about the “Fox cutting off the tiger at the waist”—it is about the divide between North and South Korea, isn't it? Given that the gravesite was the border between the two—
Gosh, I love this movie so much.
And I love that there were no unnecessary deaths.
