World Suicide Prevention Day

Today is World Suicide Prevention Day. I wanted to take a moment to share my story, in hopes that it reaches someone who needs to hear they are not alone.

Since I was young, I’ve always felt like I had a cronic case of ‘the blues.’ I was always a little gloomy, unaware of a reason or cause. When I was about 15, I started having terrible migranes. The kind that knock you out in the middle of your world history class. I started having to leave school early. Not only was this happening, but I had just moved to a town that I didn’t feel I fit in. I finally went to the doctor, hoping to find an answer for the headaches. Somehow, the visit turned from headaches to how I felt. I started crying while telling this doctor how I felt, and this was the first time a doctor had mentioned my anxiety. The blues finally had a reason. I was told to stop drinking caffeine, which fixed the headaches, and to write in a journal (because they didn’t want to put me on meds). As a songwriter, I felt like I was always scribbling down my feelings. The visit didn’t provide much help, but at least I knew the anxiety was a real thing.

A year or so after I got out of high school the feeling of depression and my anxiety level became out of control. I finally decided to see if medication would help. It did the opposite. The depression got worse, I started fucking with painkillers, and I couldn’t understand why I felt the way I did. Life really wasn’t bad, but I couldn’t get a grip. I stopped taking the medicine and I, at least, stopped thinking of death. Over the next few years I tried different medicine, some from a doctor and most from friends.

Today I am okay. Every day is different. Last weekend the anxiety was so bad that I did nothing but stare into space for two days, letting the overthinking get the best of me. Regardless, I describe my anxiety as a super power. It makes me who I am and at the end of the day, I do love myself. Sometimes it’s hard, but I work at it every day.

My constant throughout my whole life has been music. Music has always been there when I needed it. Music brought me Bryan. Music introduced me to friends that have the same kind of issues with their mental health. I write these sad songs because they’re real and true and they mean everything to me, because I’ve made it through the darkness on multiple occasions. I have conquered it before and I am sure I will have to again.

I was asked by my family why the last song we put out (Gun) was so dark. It’s because I’ve been there, and I want whoever listens to my music to not feel alone when they’re in the darkness. You are never alone. There is always something that will make it worth it.

I am still here for my family, my friends, my music. You are not alone in the dark. You will never be alone in the dark. I will be standing there with you. And we will make it through.
