Chapter 13 Fieldwork
I interviewed a family friend who’s father was born in Ethopia and fled to America. Her father came to America at the age of 24. He lived in a refugee camp before moving to Atlanta. He had a low income job and didn’t have much to survive off of. It was very challenging for him. He then moved to Los Angeles where he went to college and was able to begin a career. While living in LA he married her mother who is white and from San Diego. Instead of getting a high paying job he decided it would be best to help other refugees. This was a no profit job that he loved. He understood how hard it was because he was once a refugee. He later on became an political appointee in the Obama administration. He ran the entire federal immigration office by his self. Growing up telling her father’s story was hard because of the school and university she attended. It was very white washed and was hard to share his story and her story. After years of being in America they learned to accept things for how they were and created a better living style for their family.

Chapter 11. Field Work
The chocolate bar that I am choosing is a Hershey Bar. The ingredients of a Hershey Bar is Milk Chocolate [Cane Sugar, Milk, Chocolate, Cocoa Butter, Milk Fat, Lecithin (Soy), Natural Flavor]. Hershey gets most of their cocoa from farms in Ghana and the Ivory Coast. The ingredients used for a Hershey Bar is produced by Cacao trees bear fruit, and inside those fruits are seeds. Farmers remove the seeds, letting them ferment and then dry before roasting them for flavor. The working conditions for the workers were not so great. Most of the workers are children who earn little to no wage and they are slaves. The cocoa beans are packed properly and sold to the company. Hershey bar prices are set based on supply and demand levels and can result in varying levels of volatility on commodity prices. Mars Mondelez is the international corporation that dominate the chocolate trade. The FDA regulates the chocolate trade. Some companies like to show their customers that their chocolate has the most weight, by using digital scales and then showing what the price computing scales read on the actual package label. I brought my chocolate bar from WaWa. A store owner can make around 55-75% of a profit from one chocolate bar.

Chapter 9 FieldWork

In the kinship chart that I have above me I decided to show my mother and father siblings and other relationships. My mother and father were never married and my mom had me while in college. First i’ll talk about my mother’s side of the family. My mother has 5 children I am the oldest. She has 4 other father’s to her other 4 children. My mother and father had me first. My mother than met my brother father and they had him when I was the age 6 almost 7. They also were never married. Next is my brother and sister who are twins they share a dad. Lastly there is my younger sister. Her father and my mother were also never married. Then there is my mother sister who is deceased. While alive she had 2 children a son and a daughter. They both share the same dad and they are my first cousins. Next is my father side of the family. My father has a longtime girlfriend who he has a son with which he is my brother. My father has a sister. She is married but does not have any kids. In the kinship chart the people listed are just people who are closer to me than anyone else in my family. I have a lot of cousins, aunts, and uncles on both sides of my family. I also have grandparents on both sides of my family. I can definitely say that on my mother’s side of the family she is the one to keep everything together. She holds all family events, gatherings, and many more things that contributes to my mother beautiful character. I think that on my dad side of the family my grandmother is the one who keeps the family together the most.

Chapter 7 FieldWork
For chapter fieldwork I decided to watch Nick Jr. since my younger sister loves the shows on that specific channel. While watching tv I noticed that there was more commercials aimed towards boys than girls.. There was a total of about 3-4 commercial breaks. While most commercials last about 15-30 seconds they’re different types of commercials being played. About 6 commercials were aimed towards boys and about 4 were aimed towards girls. There was a few gender neutral or not gendered commercials being advertised. The techniques that were used in the commercials was allowing toys to seem more advanced than what they are. Adding special effects and cool sounds to make the toy seem more interesting. The commercials produced for girls have girls who are well dressed, hair neat, and play with toys meanth for girls. Commercials produced for boys have boys who play in the dirt, play with trucks and cars, etc. I think that we actively create gender roles.

Chapter 6 FieldWork
My family has lived in this country throughout my whole entire life and their life as well. Although my family was all born in America there has been a point in time where my ancestors were once born in Africa and brought to America. My family has not embraced American Nationalism because my family was born and raised in America. Although my family does follow some of the African traditions here in America. Most of my family was born in Philadelphia, PA so they have not migrated from other parts of the world. As African Americans my family celebrates national holidays such as Juneteenth and Thanksgiving. Being African American there is just certain things that have been incorporated into my life and my families life. From the way dress, what we eat, the hairstyles we wear, the music we listen to has all been incorporated into our lives. The way that I identify myself is included in family events, birthday celebrations, etc.

Ch. 4 Fieldwork
1. In the class i chose there are 17 women and 19 men. Men spoke about 3-4 times throughout the class and women spoke about 9 times throughout the class. Women in the class tend to speak more often.
2. The average length that women talked was about 20-30 seconds while men talked for the average of 10 seconds. Women would say around 10-12 words while using the comments section while men would use 3-4 words.
3. The difference between body language, eye contact, and style of speaking between men and women is that women are more likely to explain their answers and use hand motions while speaking. Men tend to look directly into the camera and gave simple responses.
4. Women keep their cameras on more throughout the class meetings.
5. My instructor is a woman. She makes sure that she explains herself thoroughly while speaking. She encourages all students to state their opinions, questions, or concerns when necessary. She is always welcoming and friendly. Her body language gives off great energy and makes you feel as though you are being talked to in a friendly manner.
6. I think that the instructor gender does not influence the way that she interacts with the class because man or women not everyone comes off with a nice personality. So no matter the gender it depends on the person itself and the persons personality. I’ve had female teachers who weren’t so nice and this teacher is very nice.

field work #3
The location I chose is a park called Max Myers. This park is a well known park in my area. I live in the northeast section of my neighborhood. While sitting at this park all i could smell was the fresh air and grass. There were parents and their children enjoying the playground. Boys young and old playing basketball. You can hear the kids laughing and screaming while on the slides and swings. Parents yelling for their kids to stay within eye sight.
1.What drew me to this park is that I always enjoyed going to the park as a child but never as I got older and I haven’t been there in awhile so I wanted to gain some old memories. At the playground area I didn’t really find a lot of people there but I did find that the park had a lot of trees and open spaces. There were a few kids playing at the playground.
2. Something that I noticed in my observation that I never noticed before is that the park has a lot of calming areas and you can actually just sit and watch the people at the park and enjoy the environment and space.
3. There wasn’t anything absent in the park that I visited. Everything that I expected to find was there.
4. Ways that the park has been affected by Covid-19 is that there is now a sanitation issue. The play area doesn’t get sanitized often so that’s a safety issue with germs. There are less people there.

After doing this assignment I learned that I have a lot of unnecessary things. I think that I could try to limit my wants and focus on my needs. A lot of the stuff that I have I do not use or it’s just sitting around. I have a habit of seeing things and buying it because I think that I might need it in the future. So I am going to stop doing that and focus more on what’s important.

Field Work #1: Making a Can of Coke Unfamiliar
2. Pliers started off to be out of wood and they were invented around 3000BC. They later started to be made out of bronze and then from stronger materials such as iron and steel.
3. My item was made in a factory in the United States.
4. The impact that this item has in my life is that it helps fixs things that i cannot fix with just my bare hands. It allows me to have more strength in order to break a wire or fix a wire or anything else.
5. People who are directly involved with making this item are Americans who work for the Irwin Company. Their life is average and make minimum wages or sometimes more.
