I have no interest in being a villain, and I don’t think that I can become a good person. I’m at a halfway point where I’m not even sure which path I should walk down… but I guess even there, I can still interfere in someone’s life and help bring things to a positive conclusion…

Hi hello I wanted to first say I admire your work immensely! But I was curious as to how you've kicked off your career/did you and if you went to art school what subject(s) did you take? I'm an aspiring artist (and cartoonist) just fresh out of high school and looking at art colleges, always had a dream of working for Disney or other animation companies and id just really appreciate feedback or advice. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for the compliment! To answer your question, it’s a bit complicated because becoming a professional artist happens different for everybody. I still can’t believe I got where I am, but I can tell you some paths people and myself have taken to get a career in animation.
First, and probably the most popular path, is attending a prestigious art school like Cal Arts. I would guess at least 70% of the artists that work at Disney or Dreamworks are from Cal Arts. Cal Arts is a good environment for artistic growth because you are surrounded by other talented students and that pushes you to strive harder. Drawbacks: it’s expensive, but probably worth the money if you are really serious about art. A lot of big studios will hire recent graduates with no experience because they trust the quality of talent that comes out of Cal Arts.
Another path, MY path, is going to a cheaper university and getting a degree in Art. I went to CSUN, and while at the time the animation department wasn’t strong, it allowed me to get animation internships at Nickelodeon and Marvel. I also allowed me to meet a lot of great people I still work with today. Pros to going to a non-art school: no debt. Cons: big studios won’t look at you after you’ve graduated. My solution was to start in small studios and slowly work my way up with hard work. People want to work with someone who has a reputation for being easy to work with and works hard. If you do that they’ll recommend you for bigger jobs in the future. Work ethic is a major part of making it in the industry, not just talent.
Yet another path is not going to school at all. I had a friend who worked professionally who only had a high school degree, but you have to be extremely self disciplined to teach and push yourself to do better art. In my opinion, school is worth it, 10% for learning valuable skills and techniques, and 90% for the environment and opportunities to make connections.
Wow I wrote a lot, but I hope I helped you out a little. Last piece of advice: just keep drawing. Even if it’s bad sometimes, you have to be a little delusional and tell yourself it’s good so you won’t stop. Pretty soon the bad drawings become less and less and the good drawings happen more and more. Thanks again!
TL;DR Work hard!

Feelings of love are just a temporary lapse in judgment. Like a mental illness. Even I get in the mood for that stuff now and then. I am a healthy girl; my body has its urges. But I won’t let a momentary slip up leave me with a burden
