LaserSmash Dev Blog
24 posts
"A time long ago, a lone laser defense platform was our people's last line of defense against a raging meteor storm. And now, the storm has come again -- and this time, our enemies are taking advantage of it. Defend us, once more!" As a life long fan of Mattel's amazing Astrosmash arcade shooter for the Intellivision, creating a remake of it has been something I've always started, but never finished. I have half-finished versions in C++, Flash, and more. When I finally settled on Unity for game development, I wanted to get this out of my system once and for all. And I wanted to create it from scratch, but try to stay somewhat faithful to the spirit of the original game. This is a blog to help enforce some personal accountability on my progress. This clone has been in the works for a while, but it's been repeatedly pushed back. This ends now. http://BytesTemplar.com/

First pass at the last enemy, the seeking missile. Also added 'hyperspace' input, but it's pretty dry right now. Just instantly pops you someplace on the screen; needs to be polished.  But, missile seeks, like it should.

Trying out a different score UI. The outline script for text in the new Unity GUI is kind of a bogus hack. It 'works' for small text, but it's trivial to reveal how it's actually rendering things -- it's drawing the same text four times in each direction, in addition to the actual letter.
I was interested in playing up a 50's sci-fi feel, and rather than use static bitmap fonts for the score, I realized I could exploit the outline script by making the outline ridiculously large, but faint... then, when you plug in a nixie tube style font, you get something that's not perfect, but seems to suggest that old style of numerical display. :)

Removed the now defunct Daikon Forge and reimplemented most of the HUD using Unity's new UI stuff from the 4.6 beta release.  Unfortunately, they don't have that swanky sweet gradient rendering for the font, so it's just a plain color.  And the stroke around the letters is kinda funky at times.
