How to set up restaurants so your sims actually get their food

Dine Out is one of those packs that I feel like I see a lot of people having issues with, specifically with sims getting their food and I always found this interesting cause this is an issue that I haven’t had in years – not since I discovered that having functional restaurants in the Sims 4 all comes down to logistics and eliminating distractions. 

The Set Up.

The most important thing about restaurants is the set up. The kitchen, dining area and waiter stations all need to be in close proximity to each other. The kitchen should also be free of clutter and consist of only the things chef’s need to prepare food. Things like wall cabinets and other storage items are usually fine but I mean, chef’s don’t interact with these things so I don’t really think they’re necessary. 

I’ll use my Greenbox Restaurant as an example for this:

As you can see, everything is very close so restaurant employees have no problem getting to the kitchen and back to diners with ease. For some reason, having a set up where the dining area is upstairs with the kitchen downstairs and waiter’s station somewhere in the back (or various other scattered set ups) causes issues which will delay your sims’ order. 

Eliminating Distractions.

Restaurants are the worst place for distractions because sims really aren’t smart enough to understand that they can’t put off taking orders to go dance or that the TV is for customers only. Any form of entertainment (the type that they would autonomously partake in at home) will prevent them from doing their job so I recommend getting rid of it (radios, TVs, ping pong tables, bubble blowing machines, etc…). While, we’re on the subject of distractions, also be aware that multi-use lots do not work well with restaurants. Things like bowling alleys, movie theaters, shops, all of that, on a restaurant lot is basically a guarantee that they’ll never get their food so just let restaurants be restaurants.

When I place other people’s restaurants in my saves, I always take a quick look at the set up and make changes following the guidelines listed above and I have no issues.

Check your Mods.

Outdated mods that adjust/control the population as well as custom food mods that introduce new recipes, harvestables, etc… will break your restaurants and prevent employees from spawning or meals from being served so make sure you keep those up to date and remove any that are no longer supported.

Following these instructions, my sims typically get their food in about 20-30 sim minutes which is perfect.

Wait what does that do?? The plumbob thing??

OMG GIRL. this is life changing if you didn’t know about it before. it turns off the plumbob and club things. it’s much better than ‘headlineeffects off’ cause it doesn’t turn off things like being able to hover and see the sims name and w/e. just go into the sims 4/game/bin and open default.ini and change the last things (where i circled) to 0.00 and save.
