this got so long again, but as an eldest child i have thoughts……..like a lot of thoughts on betty and gale…ultimately i think daughters are mirrors of their mothers (its something i see a lot in my family and my friends relationships with their mothers), like the things that mothers did and hope their daughters will never do (they try everything to prevent daughters from doing it), the daughter will ultimately always do the exact same thing………

and in gale and bettys case its the same, like even before betty was born, gale was in an exactly same position as his own mother, pregnant, sick, about to give birth in a cold place, with nobody around, not even their husbands……and the entire pregnancy, the birth and the first year in the stalag, it affected gale in a way not even the most qualified psychologist could detangle……he hoped and prayed sooooo much she wouldnt be anything like him, all so she could pop out looking exactly like him, and john adores that (how could he not, his first little baby is exactly like the love of his love, whats not to love about that), but in gale eyes its like hes failed, like from the start he set his daughter (the child hes supposed to protect) at an disadvantage in life…….so when shes young he tries so much to teach her and prepare her for life as an omega, but he goes to far (different generations and different priorities), and to betty it often sounds patronising……and then when ruth is born, both gale and john try to split time evenly between the two, but babies just need more attention and so that sort of breeds a bit of jealousy in betty…..and at times it turns to resentment, because ruth is a beta, and gale doesnt talk to her like he does to betty (like betty always has to be careful, and she cant do that or this, but ruth is never told no), and there are fights between the two sisters (while john is alive, he plays mediator, like he is sooo good at calming evertyhing down, and gale is a bit jealous, because as an omega and a mom, that is supposed to be his job), and between gale and betty is always a bit tense (he loves her sooo much and he just tries to do whats best for her, he always wanted whats best for her)

and i agree with you on the point that older children often have a responsibility placed on them to care for their younger siblings, which comes to head especially when john dies, because at this point betty is 16/17 and shes finishing high school, shes supposed to be out with friends and crushes and shes supposed to be looking at colleges, but her dad died, her mother is quiet and pushy and demanding all the time, and somehow he’s pregnant AGAIN (like how many kids do they need), and the younger children are annoying, because they are quiet all the time, and her heat is around the corner, and her mother is making casserole again (she hates that so much), and just told her shes supposed to watch her siblings again and if she could pick up ruth (but betty has plans, there is a party), and whats so important at college that you have to go now, didn’t you ask for an leave of absence, and its been like five months since buckys death, and gale is still sick all the time, ruth and maggie are out of the house the whole time (and gale never says anything about that, even worse, he sits with both of them during nights when they cant sleep), and lou is sad (keeps asking if they can see daddy), and betty cant go out with her friends just once (because she mentioned that an alpha will be there, and gale immediately said no), and she just explodes…..like she screams at her mother and at some point she calls him gale and just doesnt stop…..when shes done (gale never said a thing during the whole monologe), he says she can go to the party…..so she turns around, goes and slams the front door behind her……………..at that point gale turns the stove off, and just breaks down in the middle of the kitchen, just sobs and screams and it just doesnt stop…..after he runs out of the energy, he goes to the phone and calls benny (or brady) and asks if he could come stay and help for a bit, just until the baby is here, hangs up the phone, goes to get lou from school, they go to a diner or something and go to the park, come home, he gets lou ready for bed, kisses ruth and maggie when they come from their sports thing and reads to them (just like he did when they were little) and then sits at the kitchen table and waits……at like eleven in the evening betty comes through the door, sees gale and asks: whats for dinner, gale?, and at that point gale just doesnt give a single fuck anymore, says i dont know, we already ate, figure it out on your own, and goes to bed…….and that hurts betty in the same way that her calling gale gale, hurt him

And now for the 2/2 part…….

as for the second - ruth, i think she would be spoiled by her parents, but not like consciously, but just because of the byproduct of the times - like the war is over, rationing is gone, they have a new little baby and both gale and john provide her with everything they couldnt give the first one, but its not like bad spoiled, but just if she asks for anything she gets it………..but also shes a beta, so in gales eyes shes normal, and that sort of adds to the mentality oooo she’ll be fine….and she owns it, like shes independent and if somebody tells her no, it doesnt stop her……….i could absolutely see her driving a motorcycle (gale almost says no, but somehow she has them wrapped around her little finger)……in the future, she would be doing something adventurous, be like a traveller or a journalist, who writes and visits interesting places

for the middle one-maggie, shes often a bit of an afterthough, but at the same time she was a baby at the time gale was getting a phd and then probably another ….and like you know how you are suppose to talk to babies to make them aware of the world and to help with their linguistic skills…..i think gale did that with her, like he had his audience of one and during the entire process (writing, corrections, then planning and practicing the presentation and later on maybe even lectures) he just spoke to her about maths and physics — and i think that became their thing…..like she probably became a physicist working at NASA or something

….but at the same time she is forgotten a bit, especially after lou is born, and i feel like ruth notices that and the two betas form a really strong bond, and basically everything ruth does maggie also does…….and especially after they are a bit older they often cover for each other, like if maggie has a date with a boy, both betas say they are going together to something, and then they split up and are basically each other alibis

…..and another thing that i was thinking about is that maggie is the only one who knows about the stalag, like shes the middle one, and very smart and perceptive and she puts everything together at some point (like maybe after johns death, she talks to the other flyboys and maybe she finds some documents about that time/her parents and just puts the dates and the timeline together), but she never tells anybody (not even ruth), and it isnt until apple tv comes and talks to her siblings does she tells them about it

gale talking to maggie as hes doing his phd YESS I LOVE THAT YESS!!!! obsessed with this and she follows his footsteps and bcomes an astrophysicist or something yess i love that!!! and her and ruth teaming up ooohh yes yesss!!! mhm and like exactly like maggie is a bit of an afterthought like shes a middle child. she was named after joe dimaggio so shes got some fire in her lol i definitely think if any of them are racing motorcycles in the mud it’s definitely maggie and ruth

HER BEING THE ONLY ONE WHO KNOWS ABOUT THE STALAG. AND THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF BETTYS BIRTH OHMYGODDDD . OHMYYYYGODDDD MHM MHMM!!!!! hi, so im back and i just love the names, even though i know less about baseball than gale, so i trust you on that…..but naming them after famous baseball players, you just know john fell a little bit more in love with gale for that (also sorry this got really long, so i split everything in two parts)

and about the alpha/omega thing, honestly betty being an omega makes so much sense, especially because then she really is like her momma……blonde, blue eyed and an omega….…really just like a mini-gale…and in the stalag, when shes born it sort of makes gale even more miserable, just because he hoped so much that shed be normal….but on the other hand she is characteristically so much like john…..she’s basically daddy’s little girl (and john loves her soo much becuse shes his first tiny little baby, who he held against his chest in the dark and cold of the stalag and later during the march…)

for the fourth - lou- i think shes an alpha, this baby of the family, but so outspoken and even if she gets handmedowns, she always makes them her own and she makes sure she is not overlooked - her personality i feel like really echos johns - both are loud and extroverted and friendly, she never lets anybody forget her, but shes a total mommys girl otherwise

for the youngest (mickey), point could be made either way really, so im not to clear on him yet
