ST redditors want Mike and El to have some shared mission in s5, just the two of them.

And I’m not opposed to it.

What if they were just about to close the gates, after getting all the dangerous creatures that crawled into Hawkins back there. And then something pulled Will in right before the gates closed. And the lab people/army refused to open it because they are sure Will could not be alive anymore even seconds after going in there with all those creatures and it wouldn’t be worth it.

And we get all the emotional reactions from the characters and the camera focuses on Mike the most and he takes it the hardest. And he refuses to believe Will is gone (same as in s1). And one night he sneaks into El’s room and asks her to come open the gates and find Will. And that’s the shared mission. El and Mike go into the UD together to find Will, and during their quest they are finally forced to talk for real and we find out what’s going on in Mike’s head.

And then they find Will and we finally get a proper byler hug (and ofc willel hug too) and later, once they’ve had time to confess their feelings, we’ll get a kiss, maybe two.

Yeah, I’m not opposed to that at all. 😏

Do you realize that Mike's insecurities are his insecurities and that it's not El's fault that he feels insecure in the right relationship? he would also feel insecure in a relationship with Will because that's a problem Mike has to work out with him and it's not going to magically disappear by dating Will. You guys are just acting like mike was just insecure when he started dating el but he always felt that way.

Okay this may be a controversial take even in the Byler community but I'm just gonna say it anyway and get it off my chest. I don't think Mike is insecure about being a nerd. He is insecure about being a nerd next to El specifically. And we have proof in the show to back that up.

We literally only see Mike give up his "nerdy interests" and start acting differently when he is dating El. He gave them up the second they started dating in s3 and the second El was in Cali, he went back to playing DND and even had a little argument with Lucas in 4x01 where he embraced being a freak and nerd and was offended Lucas didn't want to be a freak anymore and wanted to try and be more popular. We literally ONLY SEE Mike abandon DND and his nerdy side when he is in a relationship with El. No other times. So it is a logical conclusion to make that his relationship with El is fueling those insecurities.

Mike's insecurities aren't that he just feels like a random nerd all the time. He doesn't mind being a nerd. He embraces his nerdy side even when he gets bullied for it. We've seen that in s1-2 and in s4. He embraces being a "freak" and a nerd and has made his friends feel better about being nerds and freaks too. He embraces his nerdiness...until he is with El. He feels insecure about being a nerd next to El because in his mind, El is the epitome of cool. She has super powers, she's saved the world, she's just a badass. She is like "a superhero" or "Superman" in his mind. The only time he is really insecure about being a nerd is when he is dating El and that is because of El's abilities and the expectations he thinks have been placed on him by dating her. He is scared El thinks of him as a random nerd. He thinks he needs to get rid of his nerdy side so he can be "worthy enough" and "cool enough" to be with someone as badass and cool as El. He doesn't think El would even want to be his friend let alone date him if she found out how "not cool" he really is. His insecurities don't stem from him being a nerd and liking nerdy things...they stem from him feeling like a nerd with El specifically. His insecurities stem from him placing El on a pedastal because of her abilities and how bad their relationship makes him feel about himself. If you don't understand that by now, then the point flew right over your head when you were watching s3 and s4.

And Mike's insecurities would not be the same if he was dating Will, I guarantee you. He feels like he can be himself around Will. Will makes him feel comfortable in being a nerd because they are BOTH nerds and "freaks." They both grew up being nerds together and he knows Will still loves DND and Nintendo even in s4. So Mike feeling like an insignificant nerd next to Will just doesn't make sense. Also, Will loves Mike for who he is and doesn't want him to change. If they were dating, he would make sure Mike felt secure in being a nerd and stayed true to who he is.

Also, Mike has this other insecurity of feeling useless and like nobody needs him, but that is a whole other insecurity he has that doesn't necessarily have to stem from his fear of being an insignificant nerd. That is a whole other insecurity he got from not being able to protect the people he loves every season and from the people he loves leaving him time and time again. But you know what?? Even Will helped him with that insecurity in s4 by reassuring Mike that the party would always need him and that El (really himself) would always need him too. That he holds the party together and keeps them strong by being "their heart." He made Mike feel worthy and important. That is something he never got from his relationship with El.

Mike would NEVER feel insecure in a relationship with Will and that is because Will loves him and sees him in the exact way he wants to be loved and seen and that is just the facts.

Do you all ever think about Max's depression and how it was rooted in the fact that she had been wanting her abusive step-brother to die for so long, even prayed for it, that when it happened, he had died because he sacrificed himself so Max's best friend wouldn't have been murdered.

And yet she still felt happy he died, but his death was so traumatic and terrifying for her because she saw it ALL, that she felt like a complete monster for wanting it and feeling happy about it (even though it had been HORRIBLE). The guilt consumed her to the point she felt as horrible as her brother once was, and started to pray for her own death as well. Which, eventually, also came.

Isn't that devastating?

The shared looks cue definitely isn't by any means Byler proof but it IS proof that things like shared looks in the show are intentional and that the actors aren't just on set doing whatever the hell they want (like Melvins and the GA seem to think). I'm gonna rub the shared looks cue in the faces of everyone who said where the actors looks doesn't mean anything.
