the top reddit post worldwide right now (at least as of when I started typing) is heartbreaking. someone who has been struggling with a lot and is asking for reassurance that their suspicion of their boyfriend is validated

and their 'boyfriend' is very clearly a romance scammer trying to get enough information to do some kind of identity theft.

talking things like. he promised to fly over, money was sent for the ticket, he said something happened so he had to cancel and never gave the money back. he asks for money a lot and sometimes lies about where it goes. his excuses are always really convincing. they have not had a single video or voice call despite talking for over a year. they have never met. he asks for money through crypto only. he promises to pay back and never does. he wants myid login information

and at the same time he makes OP feel so special and loved, like nobody else has. he asks them how they are doing, and if they have eaten recently, and OP talks about still loving him and worrying about what if their judgement is wrong and what if he is not a scammer and really is just in love and a mess. and how OP fears being a terrible person for doubting him

people do not function at their best when they feel unloved. regardless of why. and this person talks about being vulnerable and having been harmed by mental health services, and struggling to trust people.

and romance scammers take advantage of that. they are very skilled at gaining trust and making people feel loved. especially vulnerable people.

these types of scams are just becoming more and more common since the start of covid-19. people mistake the feelings they have of being loved for someone else really being who they wish they were.

even people who are the first to tell others to abandon harmful relationships can fall victim to this. it is so much easier to recognize the red flags in someone else's relationship than to admit things went wrong in your own. the brain just kind of. will not accept it. which is why so many people in abusive situations take so long to realize just how bad things are. denial is a natural response to abuse. but so is despair.

there is still kindness out there no matter how many times you have been hurt. but there are also people who seek out those who have been hurt just to take advantage of them, even if they are not 'romance scammers' by trade or anything.

it can be easy to think you are above all this too, and to laugh at someone who is hurting badly as a result of their brain trying to protect them from the truth. but this type of thing is still straight up abuse from people who prey on those who are vulnerable and desperate for hope.

be cautious, but still be kind.
