Let it pound your head
Taken from Daily Stoic
For years, you’ve worked. For years, you’ve sacrificed. You’ve risked. You’ve hustled. You’ve made tough calls, maybe even left a few knives buried in a few backs. But all of it was aimed at getting somewhere–somewhere you felt you needed to go, to do something you thought was important.
And then you got there. And? And? It was a little disappointing, wasn’t it? Thus, it has always been this way. What do you think Seneca felt upon being elected consul, knowing that it means another day in Nero’s court? How do you think Marcus Aurelius felt, another victory on the battlefield, another year in office?
“The question pounds my head,” The National sings, “What’s a lifetime of achievement?” It’s nothing is what it is. Or at least not what you think it is. “Soon you’ll be ashes or bones,” Marcus Aurelius writes in Meditations. “A mere name at most – and even that is just a sound, an echo. The things we want in life are empty, stale, trivial.” Shadows and dust. Shadows and dust, that’s what Proximo shouts at Maximus as he trots into the arena in Gladiator.
These things we chase, what do they really matter? Are they worth the things we’re willing to do for them? The nights away from home, the questionable ethics, the flattery, the compromises? No! Not much is…

22.08.22 3am Musings
Can I use the past to move me beyond my present? To remember what a feeling gave you? To remember how the people in your life made you feel? To remember your aspirations when you were younger. To reignite the flame that burned inside that has felt like it slowly burned out a while ago. To be set on fire inside for a life that you want to live. That vision that you had in your head and in your heart to go beyond your current way of life.
Perhaps I must ruminate again to get this back. To get the passion of life back.

On Comping: Mulgrew’s Philosophy
Comping: (Accompanying other musicians)
Mulgrew Miller was an exceptional Pianist in all aspects. Today we’re looking at an interview of him speaking about comping. We’ll be taking notes from this video.
______________________
“To accompany any person, a soloist singer... Demands a certain kind of involvement with the person you are accompanying”
“you can’t just go on automatic pilot and do any one thing”
“You’re accompanying someone and you have to make them feel comfortable”
“If you’re a pianist, you have two or three different kinds of support. You have rhythmic support and you have harmonic support and you have to do all that at one time and yet stay out of the way. You can’t just override and get in the way of the soloist.”
“It has to feel good for the soloist”
“One of the best ways to practice that is to comp by yourself until you feel good. Make it feel good. It has to feel good for the soloist”.

She was beautiful in a way that a roaring ocean is beautiful. Something to be admired from a distance, but not up close for fear of the ocean drowning you.

As much as I feel sad, I think not knowing where she is and what she is doing anymore is what bothers me.
