I love Carmilla when she's putting on masks and gleefully lying and playing people like a fiddle to get her way, when she's stealing hearts to crush them, when she's snobbishly dismissing peasants, when she's shamelessly seductive and gives maidens new desires at her parties before giving them death. When she's obsessive and in manic love and aware of its selfishness but not stopping, even if her beloved may eternally hate her.

But what I love especially is when she is also pathetic. Revealing those glimpses of herself drowning in sorrow and existential pain. When she says death is better than life but turning her face away from the death she has caused. And soft. Lying in Laura's lap in the garden in a summer breeze, and there, just for a while, holding her hand tight, she is peaceful, loving every single little thing that makes her feel human. Smiling her infinitely melancholic smile.

Thinking about how by putting Mircalla Karnstein's portrait into her room that night, Laura invited Carmilla into her room. For three months, Carmilla had never entered Laura's bedroom at night.

Thinking about how Carmilla reacted to this in melancholy, speaking in sobs of Laura dying for her, and kissing her under the moon (which Laura says happily that it looked exactly like when they first met). Whispering to Laura, this is our last night like this.
