Album Review: Tut - Preacher's Son
Tumblr media
This time last year, we may have told you that Isaiah Rashad was the only Chattanooga artist worth talking about.
Enter Tut, the Chat-town native that recently proved us wrong. We first heard Tut's latest project "Preacher's Son" about a week ago (we know, insert your shmoney joke here) and it's been in heavy rotation ever since.
Tut's swanging doors-smooth as silk-southern soul sound is a refreshing change of pace from current rap trends. Instead of going for booming radio style beats (think Metro Boomin) Tut sticks with soulful jazz-hop style instrumentals that gel wonderfully with his lyrics. It's this uniformity that helps give the whole project a cohesive feel and contributes to it's replay factor. Trust us; we've been replaying it for a while now.
Over these smooth backgrounds, Tut remarks on the standard rap album topics, including drug deals, good weed, women, and the like, but from a standpoint that feels more like reflection than glorification. On "Fall Of Goliath", he raps "Before you let your life pass by; don't ask how, ask why; I could die tonight", a train of thought familiar to plenty of black youth. He immediately follows this line by imploring the listener to listen to their mother when she says "that riotous living gon' put you right inside prison."
What isn't standard though, are the nods to the black church, which is often a powerful force for the youth in the black community. Tut's narrative goes in the other direction though, evidenced on the track "Hangin'" where he raps "They say ain't your dad a preacher; what you doing smoking reefer, hangin' out with the thugs and G's?" He then ties it up, saying "I could'a been a preacher but I'm rappin'" and "I'll be right where I'm supposed to be."
The album isn't all exploratory sermons though; with an easy-going cut in "Highs & Lows", where Tut remarks on his affinity for weed, women, and his crew, and wraps it all up with an easygoing mantra worth repeating in the hook: "You might be going through a lot right now; that's just the game and how it goes."
All in all, "Preacher's Son" epitomizes southern cool: as Tut drawls soulfully over jazzy instrumentals, you feel about as close to hanging with the crew on a smooth Chattanooga night as you'll get. All that and more make "Preacher's Son" a definite must listen.
Grade: A
Highlights: "Corner Stories", "Highs & Lows", "Live From Chattanooga", "Living On The Sun", "Corner Stories 2"
