i’ve always considered shishio an unusually religious man despite his behaviors and deeds; faithfully mutilated the same way anji was. i think he believes in hell not just because there is “evidence” of it on earth with human violence, but also because it is the only place he can feasibly imagine himself existing and thriving; devouring and devouring other, weaker individuals like second nature. shishio knows he’s a monster; he never questions or denies the assumption.

if anything, he takes pride in it; knowing (as shown in master of flame) that at least since the day he gathered the juppongatana, he knew he was going to hell. shishio believes hell is on earth not just because of the war, but also because he is there; his very existence proves that the world is a horrible, horrible place. and i find that very fascinating about his character; almost even telling about how he saw himself, maybe since the beginning of his story, before we even knew him.

there's something incredibly funny about shishio being willing to hand out money for no reason if someone complains to him for not paying them enough. like he's not even going to ask if yumi's trying to trick him?? he's such a chill guy

he's just one of those characters who's so weirdly colloquial and casual in a way you wouldn't expect. i really love master of flame because it shows more of him just being casual as opposed to him just constantly evil aura-farming in the main series

one of my favorite parts of the rurouni kenshin live action movies is that we just never get to find out how aoshi ended up on that ship. did he get his own boat? did he swim? did we just brush over the fact that the rengoku is at least several km off shore? he wasn't even invited to the function. shishio didnt know who he was. how did he get there

a very old hypothetical scenario comic i made where shishio and kenshin met during the transition of the hitokiri mantle.

i have a headcanon that kenshin did actually meet pre-burnt shishio a long time ago, but shishio introduced himself with a false name; this led to kenshin later down the line not recognizing him at first because he'd changed so much. by the time they'd come face to face for real and kenshin did recognize shishio, he had no reason to try and reconcile or save him because it was clear shishio was very much beyond saving. that's not to imply kenshin was okay with him dying, but more-so it was that "i need to get rid of you but i can't kill you. i don't know what im supposed to do" which eventually led to the pyrrhic victory we see in canon. i just think there's a lot of lost potential in these two having known each other before they went down their respective paths. imagine standing before your worst enemy and knowing that so many years ago, you probably could have changed something. (though lets be honest, no amount of mercy could have absolved or saved shishio. i think he's one of those characters whos doomed from the start)
