a chance fumbled. a promise long since broken. a hope doused in realisation. a long string of mistakes shackled to a childhood self that catalina couldn't quite cut loose, not after all the years of misery they had brought to fruition.

watching the other, she tenderly tucked her hair behind her ear, & brought her focus to the not uncomfortable silence brewing between them. no easy way to say 'nothing', like the admittance wouldn't bring her back to a time they would rather not remember, or that sometimes it felt like there was no point in trying. (—yet she did anyway.)

breath stuck in her throat, eyes carefully watching chelcie, catalina offered a polite, non-dismissing shake of her head. ‘‘why not? isn't like there's really much else to do, right?’’ they tried. then, unbidden thoughts growing too heavy to shoulder, added: ‘‘and, i don't know. i guess i figure i'm too pretty to die.’’

how do you like to be touched?

cautiously. your teeth are bared, as they have been, your jaw aching for so long as growls slip free. you always have to defend yourself. you lash out in fear. you need someone who does not shrink back... a hand falling slowly to your shoulder, however briefly, in a reminder that you do not have to lunge. there is no danger here, now.

an annoying habit developed in her teen years, likely. it comes with the territory — hauntings, ghosts, figures that spend the night standing by the foot of her bed. though, her mother never quite believed it was in her sleep; the cross that catalina slept with under her pillow for seven years is a testament to that.

curiosity piqued, they pin the other woman with a look & raise an inquiring eyebrow. her attention is rapt. ‘‘was it dramatic, at least?’’ she asks. ‘‘for my sake, i hope it was. because like, if it was boring, don't tell me. i don't think my ego could take it.’’
