I stand here alone, in this darkness that surround me, accompanied by a clouded night sky. There was no light in my life. I was lost in my own way, lost in my own mind, lost in my own future. I have walked down several paths in my life journey, overwhelmed with joy and hope at the starting line, but always finishing with a defeated and hopeless result. Until that day, that day when I met a boy. A boy who redirected me in this darkness, and brought clarity to my clouded future.
He was a complete stranger, but he was a stranger that gave me motivation to continue to walk forward.
Those memories about the encounter with him still flashes vividly in my mind, it was a blessing for me to be able to meet such an angel. Like every other normal person would be, my first day of high school was packed with butterflies swarming in my stomach, the excitement overflowing my thoughts, the expectations of making new friends, but also the anxiety for not being able to fit in. And the anxiety took over my whole body. I feared walking down the hallway to my next class alone. I feared to hide myself from the rest of the school during lunchtime. I feared to not being able to communicate with other classmates during class activities. These overwhelming thoughts of fear creeped through my entire body, making me unaware of my surroundings. I remember once when I grabbed my belongings hurriedly for my next class, still overwhelmed with frightening thoughts, rushing through doors and packed hallways to get to class in time. It wasn’t until I clashed onto a wall of softness, my books and stationary scattered across onto the floor, realising what I have done, but simultaneously, not knowing that softness was whom brought hope into my dull and depressing life.
“I’m so sorry I didn’t mean to-” stuttering over my own words towards the stranger that I have accidentally bumped into. My hands trembling, panicking about any rude commentary that will shoot out of their mouth while gathering all my belongings together.
“Don’t apologize. Let me help you.” It was a warm voice. A calm, soothing voice that sounded like a ballad that immediately gave me comfort. My sight travelled from the top to the bottom of the man in front of me, who was trying to help me gather my mess together. His features mesmerised into my mind. Light brown hair that covered his eyebrows, eyes that glistened, a straight nose with thick, soft looking lips. His broad shoulders and slender fingers caught my attention the most; I felt like I have never seen such a beautiful being in my life. Little did I know what the future has brought upon me because of this small incident.
“Thank you so much, I should get going to my next class.” I lowered my head, muffling sounds out of my mouth after collecting my things on the floor with his help.
“You’re welcome. I’m Jin. Tell me your name before you run off?” His eyes smiled, end of his lips lifting upwards, presenting a warm smile to me.
“(Y/N).” I stopped for a second, but soon rushing towards my classroom after realizing I would be late.
My teacher frowned towards my lateness with another figure who I didn’t know of, dismissing the two of us to the back of the classroom. As careless as I was, the familiar tone ringed against my ear, distracting me from the lesson.
“We meet again.” As cliché as this would be, Jin was sitting right next to me, with his signature smile that made me feel in ease. I gave him a small acknowledging nod before burying myself into class work.
Sooner or later, in every class that we shared, I would find this tall man with exceptionally broad shoulders sitting next to me. Even during other times, I would find his presence around me, whether it was lunchtime or the breaks in between classes. Eventually, I would notice there was an extra person chatting with me happily and carelessly on my way back home.
He was a stranger, but now he has transformed into a person that I depend on. His presence brightens up my day. I could now finally see the light of the moon of that clouded night sky.
Slowly, the time has come. Patiently waiting until the start of our graduation ceremony. I was surrounded with a small group of people who I now call friends, all thanks to Jin. He stood right next to me, hand resting on my head due to our vast height difference, as we both carry ourselves away in carefree conversations. The time of studying together, eating lunch together, walking home with each other, will now end here, as this graduation ceremony marks a full stop to this chapter of my life. Because of Jin, this path that I have taken has led me towards another one path that is full of expectation and hope. I believe that I won’t be walking down anymore paths that are overshadowed by despair.
We cheer, we shout, we cry. It will be the last time for a while until this small group of friends reunite. I shed tears, I screamed and praised until my throat became hoarse. I waved goodbye and embraced those friends whom I might not see again. Jin stood quietly next to me, witnessing a group of girl hugging each other tightly, with tears streaming down our faces uncontrollably. I bid farewell to those friends that I have made because of Jin, grateful upon the encounter with him.
“Let me take you somewhere.” Jin grabbed onto my wrist. His grip was tight, but it was strong and firm, leading me towards his car as we sped off to an unknown location. The city lights start to fade away as we drive further down the highway, distancing ourselves from the urban city, heading towards the rural countryside. The night has arrived, the sky pitch black with nothing to see. We eventually stopped at the top of a hill, resting against on the rear side of the car with a cup of hot chocolate each in our hands. I peered to the side, examining Jin’s side portrait as he admired the night sky. His features still remained beautiful like the day I met him, the light brown hair that covered his eyebrows, glistening eyes with full lips. His unreasonably broad shoulders and slender fingers that wrapped around his cup. Meeting him was the best memory in my life. There were no regrets upon this encounter.
“What are you looking at? I brought you here so we can share to see this beautiful night sky together.” He looked towards me suddenly. Immediately I moved my vision upwards towards the sky.
“Nothing. Just grateful about crashing into you three years ago.” I laughed. The sky was no longer clouded like before, the moon shined bright accompanied by stars glistening in a far cluster. The bright city afar looked like a small galaxy that has landed on earth. Everything was wonderful. Everything was beautiful.
“I’m grateful too.” He replied after a long silence, pulling me in closer towards him for warmth. “Promise me to never leave.” A small chuckle left me as I snuggled up closer to him, embracing the heat that his body gives off.
He was no longer a stranger. He was the person I could depend on. He was the one who brought the light of the moon and the brightness of the stars to my no-longer clouded night sky.
