I used to be a data analyst in local politics, aggregating information for elected officials so that they can assess the best way to maximize their impact on the lives of people in their communities. Humans became numbers and my job was to make the numbers move in favor of their campaigns and initiatives. But I cared too much. I listened to the humans, their stories, their pain and I cried for them sometimes at night when a mother lost her son because the gang that was trying to initiate him for the past few months finally got a hold of him and killed him, her number 300813 under NYCHA Emergency Transfer, Priority T2. - She was waitlisted for months and never got the chance to relocate her son. . . I cried when a young girl, not too far in age from me at the time, came into an office with a man who claimed that he had took her in after seeing her on the streets. Him and his wife were trying to help her, his intention may have been pure but I still asked to speak with her alone. She came to the office frequently by herself, she was nice. I was able to get her an internship. She had said she found a job and thanked me for being a friend. I saw her a few months later at the Hudson River Pier, it was late. Eyes glistened when she saw me, as much as dilated pupils can glisten. I never saw her again. I refused to close her case, but after 60 Days it must close, “Case Resolved” they said, improving overall performance and reducing the number of At-Risk-Youth in that area. . . My cousin was a number. Case Closed. You can’t resolve a case if the doctor of a malpractice goes MIA after the patient dies. . . . Burnout does sneak up on you, and you can love what you do and be great at it! I’m damn good with technology, data, software, logistics but I’m even better at being human. Even worse, I’m a creative. I’m glad I left that position to pursue my art but that profession never left me. Social Impact is important, data is important. . . But you can’t save others unless you save yourself. You can’t show up for other people more than you show up for yourself. . Ganja & Hess Restored

A true gem is coming to Metrograph on May 30th!

Bill Gunn’s most under appreciated film, Ganja & Hess returns to theaters in a new and - in my opinion - better way! Restored from 35mm negatives, the newest version of Ganja & Hess captures the essence of Gunn’s artistic vision, which was suppressed in a time where gatekeepers were reluctant to release, and unable to appropriately identify, such a provocatively haunting masterpiece; Hollywood wanted to make black versions of white movies - i.e. Blackula, Shaft, and Super Fly. The final draft of Gunn's commissioned work turned out to be—not that.

Marketed as a "grindhouse blaxpoitation" the film follows the life of an anthropologist, played by Duane Jones (Night of the Living Dead), as he succumbs to blood-lust after being assaulted by his mentally unstable assistant (Gunn). Layered with the nuances of being black in America, this rebellious and emotionally jarring thriller is a film aficionado's dream and not one to miss!

The glorified directors cut of Ganja & Hess will be presented by Kino Lorber at Metrograph Theatre in NYC for a limited one week run. It has been restored by the Museum of Modern Art with support from The Film Foundation.

I wrote this article in 2018 for BAUCE Mag and am still in love with this film. It has inspired many of my own personal art since. I wanted to throw it back in light of the release of Dolemite, Is My Name currently streaming on Netflix. What’s your favorite film from that era? Sound off.
