“I’ve been sharing information with The Avenging League. We’re working on finding the locations of NOVA’s other detention facilities.” He’d considered long and hard whether or not to trust Lorna with heading to another of them after how the first mission had ended, but her father would not be involved. Not by Scott’s request, anyway. “I want them cleared. Cleaned out.”
He looked away from the program to watch Lorna. “Beyond that, we’ll see what threats we’re facing. My priority is keeping the people in these walls safe, but…we can’t let the world outside keep building up against us, either.” She knew that. Scott had just wanted, needed, to make sure they weren’t taking shots before they could back them up. “Are you up to inviting Gambit to the team?”
Her eyes narrow a bit at the news of the Avenging League, but she’s not too surprised. Nor is she too opposed to their help. They’d need everything they could get, after all. "Can we trust them?” but her expression shifts to one that is way more satisfied as he continues. "Good. That is something I can most definitely do,” and this time is different, certainly. There would be more of a plan, and mainly, different people.
She nods as he continues, finally feeling a small sense of relief. They weren’t done yet surely, but this was something. This was progress. This was what she wanted. She didn’t need to voice just how much she agreed-- he knew at this point, that was clear. She gives a more solid nod at the request, “Absolutely. I’ll get him on board. When do we start?”

Lorna actually came to the park to meditate quite regularly. Sometimes she preferred silence, but others she cared more about the stretch of earth beneath her. This was one of those times. She sat in the grass, legs crossed, not actively using her powers, but simply being aware of the elements around her. It was a refreshing pause after her classes for the day, a moment to center herself.
She opens her eyes and blinks. Did she hear her name? No, that hadn’t been... admittedly, for all the telepaths she knew, she was blessed with those knowing her boundaries when it came to mind reading. Jean is perhaps one of the only voices she’d take without a thought of harm (now that Phoenix was gone, at least.)
“Jean?” her brow is knit together as she calls out from where she sits, looking around. Someone passing her gave her an odd look, but didn’t ask. She sighs, knowing hearing may not help here. Despite her hesitation due to the flashes of her past dealings with mind control, she closes her eyes and lets her mind.... reach out? It made so much less sense for non-telepaths, but it wasn’t like she was a stranger to it after years on the same team. Besides, if it was Jean, that would be a whole new happiness that she suddenly very much wanted. Jean? Was that you?

Though it had been a few years, to know the Phoenix no longer held a tight grasp on her was surreal. She was capable of fulfilling tasks she had not been able to have done before. For that, there was always the way of relief that flowed within her, especially while preparing to meditate.
She settled the mat on a decent dry spot in the grass. The hot California sun was not as scorching as it had been the other day, even as it beamed on her face and parts of her arms. Soon, she adjusted the position of the mat, patting away a few wrinkles when she stilled for a brief moment.
An uneasy sensation, though dull, would force her attention, straightening her back and sitting on her knees. There were many others in the park but she’d turn her gaze, searching without the admittedly small crowds of people around until a name came to mind.
“Lorna,” she uttered through an uncertain tone. Whatever coerced her mind to think of her was beyond her comprehension. Perhaps her mind was playing tricks on her and she needed to carry on. Regardless, she stood from comfortable position, continuing her search.

Lorna’s friendship had been unexpected, and, in Laura’s personal opinion, undeserved. Laura tended to avoid relationships with people whenever possible, and if they absolutely had to happen she tended to keep them at arms length. But when Gabby had came into her life, her and Daken, that had…changed things. Started to open her up more, even if just a bit. Even when she left them, came to Star City to start her own path, a small part of that openness had stayed. Until NOVA came calling, and with her imprisonment a reminder of her past, wrapping around her ankle and pulling her deep into the freezing waters that were her own subconscious, that instinct to pull away when things got dangerous.
Lorna had simply came to her about some mutant underground business. It was simple, professional, not meant to start a friendship. But the stubborn mutant had wormed her way through her walls, and the two had become actual friends. Other than Remy, she’d probably call Lorna her closest friend. She often wondered why she bothered, Laura certainly hadn’t made it easy for her.
Her lips quirked upward in a smirk at her statement, before letting out a deep sigh. “I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’m sorry, Lorna. Truly. You’re my friend, too,” the word felt foreign to her, strange and terrifying but also made her…happy. It was nice. “So…how have things been going? It has been a while, and I’ve missed you.”
Call her a sucker, but anyone that had as dysfunctional a father as her was worth befriending. Sure, Logan was tolerable many moments, a teammate, and on many levels a friend, but he was also quite dysfunctional as a person. It wasn’t like any of them were exactly immune to that, of course. She couldn’t talk much. But, that commonality along with Laura’s insistence on simply helping within the underground before made it quite simple in Lorna’s mind. Whether they were wearing X’s or working in shelters, they were friends. Lorna was quite stubborn when she wanted to be.
Her smirk broadens to a smile at the sigh, “Glad I wore you down,” she teases lightly, more than happy with the statement. She knows the effort it took for the other, and she wasn’t about to dishonor that. She settles herself beside the other, “Well, things have been... interesting. Fighting NOVA off where we can even though it seems mostly useless at this point,” she’s a little bitter, but not many people could disagree at this point, “but we’ve been able to keep more people safe. We’ve been growing more here, and a few cities are expanding too.” Lorna tilts her head, looking over the other a moment, knowing what it meant to be held by NOVA. “How are you holding up?”

Even the slightest resemblance was more than enough to elicit a bad taste in the back of his throat. The physical attributes of the other was only part of what made him attractive. No. There was the compassion he expressed. He remembered the other telling him something that left him in distraught.
His thoughts would be interrupted by the voice of a face he hadn’t seen in quite some time. Of course, being in the area where he was at, he was bound to run into familiar faces here and there. He elected to ignore them most of the time, reiterating his point to Scott a few weeks prior that the only residents in District X he was concerned about were Laura and Gabby.
He narrowed his gaze at her, which was made more evident by the wrinkling of his brow underneath his mask. She was the last person he expected to see trying to prod at him. But they had worked together in the past. It seemed only natural for her to become curious as to what he was up to.
“I’d suggest you leave me alone,” he mumbled, crossing his arms. “What I’m doing and why I’m wearing this is nobody’s business, especially not Scott’s. I’m just taking a shortcut is all.”
Tumblr media
“Oh I’m convinced,” she doesn’t move a muscle, shooting him a bit of a withering look, “seriously? You really thought that would work?” Lorna rolls her eyes with a sigh. She couldn’t exactly talk about being closed off and prickly. Most times, she tended to default to that sort of temperament herself. Of course, the fact that she’d also just gone rogue was in her head, and seeing a friend go through it made her feel quite stubborn. She wasn’t going anywhere.
Tumblr media
“Yeah, I don’t care about whose business it is, you got caught,” she says bluntly, crossing her own arms to match him. She arches a brow, “Did that guy do something to you?” if he wasn’t going to talk, she certainly could takes hots in the dark. It wasn’t like she was about to let him go anywhere easily, “You trying to go on some mission against NOVA? c’mon--” her eyebrows come together, “you can’t expect me to see you dressed in that and just look the other way. What’s going on Akihiro?”

He’d hidden nothing of his agenda from Lorna. She’d agreed to it openly, understood the anger, the motivation, the intent, and her regret over doing so wasn’t his to control even if he wished that were not the case. Lorna wanted what he wanted. Unlike Wanda and Pietro or even his grandchildren, she knew how futile peace was, yet reigned herself in and pursued it anyway. Over and over. Not everyone was capable of turning away from relationships and family in dogged pursuit of a better future. He knew that he made great sacrifices, willingly and repeatedly, and often did so alone. That he had Anna with him seemed both miraculous and likely temporary, hinged only idea that he did not cross some particular line in the sand again. Lorna seemed unwilling to put herself in that position.
“Nothing to be afraid of.” He held it out toward her with a slightly raised brow. “It’s a gift. Consider it an olive branch, if you want, or perhaps just something to make up for missed holidays and birthdays.” There had been plenty of those. With the exception of sweet Luna, he seemed doomed to know his children and grandchildren only after they were grown.
Tumblr media
Perhaps the worst part of this dance Lorna felt the need to play was that she wasn’t mad at him, really. She definitely knew what she’d been getting into. Lorna was far from unintelligent, and she knew the consequences before anything. She was more mad at herself, but still she presented it with caution around him, as if anything he said might be talking her into a new plan. It was irrational, she knew that, but she still did it. Sometimes, you were irrational with family, that was that.
She opens her mouth, brows knitting together in brief confusion, but thinks differently and says nothing. The look she gives him is a soft form of confused, not offended, perhaps a little worried in the shift, though certainly this side wasn’t unheard of. After all, she’d be much less defensive of him if this side didn’t exist. She offers him a smile before she opens the box. She can’t even hide her surprise at the contents, a little gasp escaping.
Tumblr media
“Dad,” the jump from caution to awe is instantaneous. She sets the box on her desk and takes out the two pieces of the golden hair piece, admiring the green jewels on the end. As she touches it, it almost feels familiar, “you made it?” There’s a question there, but she figures she knows, a perk of their powers. A smile comes over her face despite herself, “It’s beautiful, really. Thank you.”

“You wanted a way to respond,” he reminded her, even though she’d already agreed, “and this is it. Logan, Remy, and Quentin Quire will be joining you. If he proves himself, Nathan will be there, too.” Scott knew that his son was capable, he was well versed in what he was able to do and all that his older counterpart had accomplished, but it didn’t change the fact that he was young. He was young and Scott had an unexpected opportunity to actually protect him. He wasn’t going to throw it away just to put him on some team. “I’m partially open to other suggestions.”
He hit the start button on the control panel and looked up as the Danger Room darkened and began the simulation. It was only a Demo and didn’t need anyone to run it, but the obstacle course he’d created was formidable even at a glance. “I’m working on the first assignment.”
Lorna nodded, she did indeed want something to do. The small smirk on her face was satisfied, thrilled even, ready for the idea of a place on this new team. Her brows raise at the lineup, “Some interesting choices there. Not complaining, just interesting,” in thinking about it, she enjoyed the diversity of the dynamic, and of course she pleasantly excited to work with Remy again. She thinks for a moment, but shrugs the next, “I’m ready to see how it all goes.”
As the simulation goes, her eyes run over it with a keen yet clearly excited look. “What do you see us dealing with specifically?” she asks, arms folding as she’s looking thoughtfully at the images in front of her, nodding without realizing as her mind works.

Part of her thought she should ignore whatever it was she saw on her way home. She wasn’t in her uniform, in fact she was wearing sandals of all things. Still, the small spikes on them made it easy to make sure they stayed on as she floated out of sight of the figure, ducking down on the short roof she went on as she peered down. She figured Star City and District X had more vigilantes than perhaps any other place on the planet at the moment, so she sorely hoped she was wrong about who she was seeing... but no, below her on the street was the familiar form of a Dark Wolverine costume, and the glint (and faraway metallic feeling, if she focused on them) of two claws per hand. She breathed as she watched him, zeroing on the figure he was watching from afar. More than anything, the outfit made her uneasy... and really, as someone who already put the team through enough recently, shouldn’t she attempt to investigate? Even aside from that, he was a friend, and the whole Dark Wolverine thing never had anything good in store. [ @bcstardized ]
As the third distant figure disappears, Lorna floats over the edge of the roof and down, green glow lighting up her rather summery and very civilian outfit up as she gently lowers herself down to stand in front of him, resting a hand on a cocked hip. “Well hi there. Fancy seeing you here,” she looks pointedly at him, “dressed like that. It’s like in the 80s, I highly recommend something not so stuffy and mischievous. I especially recommend not letting Scott see you like that.” Lorna tilts her head and gives him a look that makes her curiosity clear, and she was never one to let her curiosity go, “What are you doing? And who are you watching?”

Jeb knows that his outburst wouldn’t help the Humans see their kind in a positive light, but they already held hatred for him just knowing that he’s a Mutant. They didn’t even need to know what his powers are, just focusing on all of the potential for ill intentions. Jebediah really messed this one up, didn’t he? “Does that mean ya have been in a similar situation? What did you do?” Jebediah looks at the woman with a childlike wonder in his eyes, willing to listen to the story. The excitement only grows with the promise of doughnuts, making him grab his flannel to toss over his plain white shirt. Jeb follows after Lorna as she walks off, staying close while moving through the shelter. “Ah wish it was swept under th’ rug, but ah know that we don’t always get what we want.” He only frowns for a moment, but then looks back at her with a smile of his own. “It’s overwhelming since ah’ve never been ta the city before, but ah like it. Ah like getting t’meet other people like me. Ah don’t feel as alone anymore, is that normal, Lorna?”
Tumblr media
“I have. Most of us have. Unfortunately, mutants don’t always get a choice in how we react, other than surviving,” she pauses for a moment, finding the words, “Well, depends on the year,” she says wryly, “I’ve had humans try to corner me dozens of times, and it’s never ended well for them. I’ve... gone overboard when there were better ways about it. And there are better ways than violence, no matter who tries to tell you different,” she cautions him gently. The risk of extremism is nothing to laugh at, which is part of the reason she wanted to talk to him. So far, she’s encouraged. Lorna lets out a wry laugh, “Well, the Stones knew what they were talking about I guess.” How many times had she listened to that song growing up? It’s funny to hear it applied, but obviously it’s because it’s fitting for their lives, and for mutants in general. Not to mention, how bright and peppy he is really gets Lorna, and she doesn’t want that to change, and who better to make a sarcastic joke out of a bad situation than her? She returns his smile, it’s quite infectious, “Perfectly normal,” she confirms, “I grew up in a suburb in California, probably a bit more crowded than Kentucky, but coming to a place like this where you definitely aren’t alone changes a lot. It’s hard to feel alone when you can count a few dozen people just around us, right?” they round the corner and she nods to a small pink-walled place down the block, “that’s it! I love their mini donut packs. They have so many options.”

She kept her smile on her face as the students filed out the door, waving and saying goodbye as they went. It was easy for many of them, though the sight of her father sent feeling of apprehension growing in her stomach. Logically, Lorna knew she couldn’t avoid him forever, that was just unlikely. One way or another, Erik would find a way to reach out to his kids and try to find their way together. Honestly, it would serve to confused her sometimes if her first reaction hadn’t historically been to accept whatever he had to say.
She’d say the faith she put in him before was wearing thin, but the worst part about right now was that she’d also shaken her own faith. She’d also been right beside him. That’s why she stayed away, because their tendency to fall into the same wavelength when it came to their powers... well, Lorna was being cautious, now perhaps more than ever.
Only once the last student was gone did she finally acknowledge him, turning with an even look. It’s not cold but it’s not warm either. She’s cautious and distant to him, at least until she knows his int“What are you doing here?” she asks simply, eyes zeroing in on the box in his hand, “What’s that?”
@byelxver
While it did not come entirely as a surprise that Lorna avoided him after the NOVA center was destroyed, he had hoped that it would work out differently. He’d wanted her to commit to something that she was so often on the verge of doing. He could feel it when they worked together, the synergy that came of it. It was not something that he could recreate with anyone else. Lorna was not only his daughter, but their powers complimented each other, fed each other, and it was difficult to imagine anything they couldn’t accomplish with time and commitment. She was unwilling to completely offer him the latter.
Once the NOVA’s inhibitors were off, however that had come to pass, and Erik had his powers returned to him, he’d spent an evening making something of an olive branch. While he in no way felt he’d done something wrong, it seemed foolish to keep tension borne of nothing. Things with Wanda and Pietro would always be strained and he had done much to earn that, but with Lorna…with Lorna, he had hopes that there was more of a chance to move beyond it.
He showed up at the end of classes for the day and waited by the door as her students filed out. Since he hadn’t been able to guess how much time she’d grant him, he stood with a box in hand. She could take it from him, at the very least, and do with it as she pleased.
