flissxsloane:
As her friend answered her question and cleared up the confusion she’d inflicted on herself, Fliss couldn’t do anything but grin. Words failed her when she was certain that none would do justice to the joy and elation that she was feeling about the news. But despite her having no way of being coherent, words still fell from her lips anyway and she knew that Charlie at least knew her well enough to interpret what she really meant. “Oh. My. God. Shut up. Shut up.” But just in case her effusive exclaimation didn’t quite get her point across, the blonde was quick to wrap the brunette into a hug to show her affection. And partially to hide the happy tears she knew would inevitably begin to well up. “Charlie I am so happy for you. I just know you’re going to be the best mom.” As she began to pull away, she couldn’t help but let questions flow freely once more. Two weeks wasn’t a long time and she knew that Charlie had every right to keep the news to herself for as long as she wanted but that didn’t stop her wanting to know everything. “Have you told anyone else? Is it still a secret? What did Nate say? When can I start planning the baby shower?”
⛈
“I will not!” Charlie giggled back as she sunk into the hug of her best friend, arms wrapped tight as she rocked them back and forth. Fliss was quite honestly, the first person she wanted to tell. She ended up being second, only coming after Nate’s brother, but coming before any other family, including her own parents. In a way, Fliss was more family to Charlie than her own parents. The relationship she had with Fliss was one of unconditional love and wavering support, something she couldn’t say of the one with her parents. “Shut up before you make me cry,” Charlie replied, although, she already had tears collecting in the corners of her eyes. “Only Nate’s brother, which I feel like some twin shit absolutely happened, because he called like, 5 minutes after we found out.” She began to answer Fliss’ rapid fire questions, “Not a secret but, you know Nate, with him being a teacher and all we’re just keeping it on the DL a bit, until I start showing then all bets are off. -- And well, Nate was the one who realized I might be pregnant even before I did. God damn him and his stupid observant brain. And of course he said all the right things while we were waiting and afterwards because he’s so stupid perfect and I hate him for it while I was just saying every stupid thing that came to mind.” she huffed playfully. “Fliss, babe, you literally have like...5 months, relax.”

Soft chuckle was given as he let himself be pulled through to bathroom. “Too late now, it’s ingrained in here.” All the waiting felt intolerable even though he’d always considered himself something of a patient man but now that they were only minutes away from a result things felt as though they were dragging even more. It’s nothing he shows too obviously though, instead just wrapping his arounds around Charlie, head shaking in fond exasperation as debated his response. His inability to bring himself to say no to her was inevitably what had gotten them into the situation. “Come on, you know we usually need longer than five minutes.” The truth was that for all he wanted a distraction for the next five minutes, he didn’t want to wait a second longer for the result than they absolutely had to. So he proposed an alternative, hoping that it would do for them both. “How about I make us something to eat or at least a drink?” Pressing a kiss to his wife’s lips as though that would sweeten the deal, it was his turn to take her hand and lead her back through to the kitchen.
⛈
“Now is not the time to be bragging about your stamina, Nate. That’s what got us here in the first place.” She shot back, she knew it made it sound like a bad thing, like it was a pregnancy scare rather than possibility, but she knew after all these years he understood humor was how she dealt with nerves. If she had been sitting, she knew she’d be jiggling her knee enough to shake a table or two. She was only able to stop herself from pacing by letting her hands run paths up and down her husband’s broad and strong torso, a nervous action of it’s own. “Double shot of tequila and lime for me.”

Grin flashed over his features at her words, unable to resist a quick, teasing quip to alleviate some of their nervous energy. “Not always, just most of the time.” Charlie’s endless energy was something to be admired - she was electric and had been just the spark he’d needed to shock him into the realization all those years ago that love and marriage wasn’t completely off the table for him. Because he saw it as something so endearing, a crucial part of the woman he loved, it had never really overwhelmed him. From the moment he’d asked her on their first date he’d always been prepared to be whatever she needed him to be so if she’d wanted him to wait outside that’s what he would have done. But he found himself relieved that she wanted him with him, glad that they would be facing it as a team without him having to wait outside.
Head shook reassuringly in answer to her question, firmly believing that a man taking a backseat was an old fashioned mindset he wanted no part of. He wanted to be next to his wife every step of the way. “We’re in this together.” Keeping one hand in hers he reached for the test. “Now, what do you say we put that ‘pee stick’ to use?”
⛈
“I misspoke, I’m taking it back. You’re wrong. Like, always. Forever wrong.” She huffed playfully, her nerves already fleeing. What would be, would be. And whatever it was, the two would face together, just as they did with everything else. “Oh thank god, because I’m about ready to burst,” she responded at his prompting, grabbing his free hand and pulling him towards the bathroom. Once the test was in hand, she made quick work of it, while she had made peace with her nerves, that didn’t mean she wasn’t dying to find out what the result was. “I can’t believe we have to wait a whole five minutes,” she groaned, finishing washing her hands before knocking her head against his chest repeatedly. “Distract me, Hudson, before I lose my fucking mind. We could have a quickie?”

Jason shrugged; he certainly wasn’t the person anyone should go to, seeking the correct plural for a plural like nemesis. “I guess that’s a fair enough reason to name … claim … whatever, a nemesis.” He felt at an mix of sympathy and jealousy at her next words — it wasn’t that his dad had ever not been supportive of his love of music, but it sounded like a wonderful luxury, to be encouraged into playing an instrument like that. Still, if it wasn’t what she wanted, nothing else really mattered. “They wanted you to do the cello, specifically, or did you get to pick that, at least?” He chuckled again, and said mock-defensively, “Hey, we bathe. Can’t do anything about the cooties, but the sweaty’s a temporary thing. Strictly post-show.” That she didn’t know how many guys this hypothetical tour would involve told him maybe he’d been wrong, and her follow-up question gave him an odd feeling of anonymity that really, he couldn’t complain about, even if he didn’t know how to answer it. For the most part, he felt as tough he was living his dream, or at least, the biggest one he’d ever had. Still, there was more to life than work and career, even when one’s career was so enveloping as his was. “I guess I’m trying to figure that out. My dad died in January — it really knocked me for a loop.”
“Picking up yoga, but yeah, that, too, actually.” Since she’d mentioned it, and seemed willing to share, he was starting to wonder, though maybe that was just because it wasn’t somewhere he’d spent a lot of time. “Where else did you go — or was it just Arizona?” It was always interesting talking to someone who travelled to travel, and not to work; he couldn’t remember the last time he’d gone somewhere that wasn’t least tangentially involved with RICHTER or writing music, except, well, coming home to Eureka. A faint grin broke across his face at her offer, and he glanced down at his legs ( he’d worn shorts; movement shouldn’t be a problem, ) as if to double check, then back at her. “You’d better not be teasing me with the promise of more Oasis,” he told her as he rose, gently setting his guitar on the bench. “I don’t want to disturb your routine any more than I already have, but, how am I starting, here?”
⛈
“Eh they didn’t massively care, as long as it’s something that had some amount of prestige to it, could perform in an orchestra or concert hall. Violin, piano, cello, I don’t think they cared. Although now I’m realizing I should have tried to see if they’d let me play like...An oboe or something.” She couldn’t help but snort loudly at the thought of the amateur sounds of an oboe ringing through the pristine Leung household. She couldn’t help but wonder about the stranger’s home, had it been filled with music? “What about you, how long have you been playing?” Though as the man continued and mentioned his father’s death, despite having brought it up himself, she did feel as if perhaps she had been prying. She had never dealt with the death of a parent, her grandma who she had been extremely close with, yes, but she knew it didn’t quite compare. Kids grew up with the innate sense that their grandparents would die, but parents were different. Deep down, when you grew up, it was a rational fact, but you still are taken aback when it actually happens, like you didn’t think it’d actually would.
She had enough friends who had lost their parents and heard them express just how sick they got of ‘i’m sorry for your loss’, that Charlie quickly snapped her jaw shut when that had been her first instinct. “You were close?” she questioned, giving the man space to give as much information as he wanted, whether that be a simple yes or no, or an expansion on the answer.
“Well, my grandmother had always been a Tai Chi bitch. You know, one of the old asian ladies in the park on Sundays, and it had brought her such peace and happiness, so I tried it. Wasn’t for me, so she recommended yoga. And at the time I also didn’t vibe with it, but after I struck out on my own, I needed something to ground me and well, there it was.” That was the abridged version, leaving out lots of parental drama and personal trauma, but she was sure he didn’t wanna hear all that. “But I did a bit, not as much as I would have liked. Up and down the Western coast, ventured into the south and north west a bit. I was planning to maybe do a big haul journey down through South America, but I found Eureka before then and...Well things sorta just fell into place. And now, six years later I’m married and got a house and three dogs and...Maybe it was for the best.” There was the shrug again. But sometimes it did amaze her just how much her life had changed, from living practically on the road, bouncing from job to job, to having all of that.
“I would never,” she responded, hand to her chest as if clutching pearls. “Well, for your quick preview I won’t go into all the breathing techniques, but it is important for you to first take a couple of moments to set your intentions, empty your mind, and ground yourself. Do that in whatever pose you feel comfortable with. May I recommend the extremely cliche one you see in movies? It’ll feel silly and stupid, but i’ve found the hands in the center of the chest is extremely centering,” She imitated the one she spoke of, hands clasped in an almost praying position in the middle of her chest, arms straight and parallel to the ground. “C’mon, show me what I’m working with,”

☀
So caught up in the warm glow she felt whenever she spent time with her best friend any nervousness that the brunette might have been feeling had gone unnoticed by the blonde. Instead once they’d arrived back at her apartment she’d left Charlie to make herself comfortable on the couch to retrieve the fluffy sweater she’d mentioned in their texts. “Found it!” Returning triumphant she claimed her seat and took a bite of her sandwich. Hand lifted to cover her mouth as she tried to chew fast enough so that she didn’t leave Charlie waiting. “God mother? I don’t think I’d feel anything but positive. Maybe a little nervous about the responsibility but really I think it’d just be an honour really that anyone would -” Her stream of consciousness was interrupted by a sudden realisation and jaw fell somewhat slack as she fully focused on the other woman. “- wait.” Squinting at her friend for a moment to weigh up whether she’d interpretted the question correctly, she couldn’t help but left questions flow albeit incomplete ones. “Charlie, are you -? Are you going to be -? Are you asking me if-?”
⛈
The sweater given to her by her friend now sat in her lap, fingers kneading the soft fabric like a cat making nervous little biscuits. They had been through this with past friends, so she knew it wasn’t as if Fliss was about to tell her that babies were god’s mistake and she could never be friends with a pregnant whale. But also, there had been friends that had come and gone from their friend group who had disappeared into their marriages and motherhood and never came back out, something Charlie would refuse to do. Not only because she wasn’t that person, but also she don’t think she’d make it through the process sane, without her best friend. But even with all her nerves, as it finally dawned on the blonde and she was questioned, Charlie couldn’t help the growing smile on her face. She began to nod before she could even open her mouth, “Yes and yes.” she bit her lip, “I’m in my second trimester,” she finished with a shrug. “And no I didn’t keep it from you that long, I literally just found out like...two weeks ago.”

for: @flissxsloane where: fliss’ apartment
Why was she so damn nervous? It was Fliss. It wasn’t like she was about to tell her parents (which was another topic of discussion on the roster for today). But as they sat, curled up on Fliss’ colorful couch, Charlie couldn’t help but fiddle nervously with the edge of the deli paper that her sandwich sat in. For all her teasing of making Fliss nervous about her news, now it was her who wore the Nervous Nelly Crown. “Okay, now for the reason I convened this meeting,” Charlie started, joking, an attempt to lessen the butterflies in her stomach. Saying it aloud, to someone other than Nate made it so much more real than it had been. “Hypothetically...How do you feel about the title of god mother?”
