My Cryptid Batfamily AU

Isolated “Cryptid” AU where the Batfam are bat/bird-like spirits that protect Gotham. They’ve reportedly been around as long as Gotham herself, with the first sightings of the Bat appearing around the same time the city was founded.

Lore subject to change as I work on it

Also haven't decided if I'm keeping OG names or using original ones.

Bruce - based on a bat (duh)

Dick - based on a falcon

Cass - based on an owl

Jason - based on an eagle

Tim - based on a hummingbird

Steph - based on a hawk

Duke - based on an eagle

Damian - based on a bat

Alfred is a human that pledged a life debt to the Bat after it saved his life. Gotham took that literally and made him kind of immortal

I don't know what to do with Babs

They don’t have secret identities, since they’re guardian spirits so they’ve been spotted in the daytime more often, though they’re still mostly nocturnal

Tim as the only non-predatory bird because I think it's funny

Tim is a short king

Tim's wings are kind of iridescent in sunlight

There is a Nest in the Batcave for the Birds to nap/sleep in as well as various support structures for everyone to perch or roost on

There are some goons who swear they can always tell when Tim is around because of the humming of his wings but he can move damn near silently if he wants to

Wing grooming is a social activity for the Birds that strengthens their bonds with each other

The Bats don't have the same grooming instinct but are still invited to join

First time Damian tried, he yanked out a handful of Tim's feathers which got him kicked out of the preening circle and he sulked for like half an hour

They have their own language they use on patrol

This language mostly consists of clicks, whistles, chirps, trills, howls, cackles and screeches (inspired by various birds, foxes, hyenas, as well as dinos from path of titans and the isle)

They can speak broken English, so they can soothe frightened children or talk to Commissioner Gordon (they like him for some reason)

The Birds like to play a game where they sneak up as close as possible to rogues/goons and scream just to make their target scared.

This has led some people to speculate that the Spirits feed on fear.

Jason never died, but he was kidnapped by some wannabe cryptozoologists that burned down the warehouse he was being kept in after the Batman caught onto them

He was kept inside the Manor/Cave while he recovered from the ordeal

Due to his ridiculous metabolism, Tim has a very weird sleep schedule, usually only taking short naps before he has to eat again

Dick is the fastest flyer, with Duke and Steph as close runner-ups

Cass can fly completely silently and usually wins their games

Tim is very hard to catch in their sparring games because he can fly in every direction, even backwards

Gothamites use the term ‘Robin’ to refer to the Bat’s “offspring”. Like how dogs have puppies and cats have kittens. Bat spirits have robins.

The bright colours of the Robins’ wings are believed to be a form of aposematism - warning any would be threats to stay away. Another theory is that they’re brightly coloured so the parent can find them easily in the darkness.

These colours shed out as they mature. The only exception is Damian, who doesn't have feathered wings.

Since they’re guardian spirits, they’re kind of tied to the city, though they are able to leave if they wanted to the Bats can help out with League stuff if they have to

However they can't sever their connection to Gotham and move to another city, so Dick is still tied to Gotham, but is able to travel to Bludhaven for brief periods of time before he gets pulled back to Gotham

Constantine has been chased out of Gotham by an angry horde of Birds after making flirtatious advances at their parent

The Justice League has attempted to get them to join, but outside of world ending threats the Bats prefer to keep to themselves

The JL has arranged playdates with their own proteges with the Batkids though, so there have been some small team ups here and there

Duke still glows. No one knows why.

Duke and Jason are eagle buddies.

i need to rant a bit cause im SO PISSED OFF

My family has a hoarding problem. I DONT but the rest of my family does. Theres a desk that nobody uses and hasnt used im years so i use it to keep a bucket of my paints on just cause its a big bucket and a lot of paint and takes up a lot of space so i didnt want it in my room. I USE MY PAINT ALL THE TIME thats my main form of creative expression. I am painting CONSTANTLY and had a big collection of expensive paints. DID YOU NOTICE THAT I SAID HAD??? THEY THREW THAT SHIT AWAY. Cause we “have a lot of stuff we dont use and need to start downsizing” and apparently i can just “buy more” LIKE HUH??? For one yeah we need to get rid of a lot of YOUR shit cause you guys have a lot of stuff you dont use HOWEVER I USE MY PAINT ALL THE FUCKING TIME. And also PAINT IS SO EXPENSIVE and I ALSO GOTTA BUY WHOLE NEW BRUSHES TOO which ive been collecting since i was 11 and i had brushes i had modified years ago to make painting specific things easier such as clouds and stuff. I am so mad. Im so unbelievably pissed and wanna get revenge but I cant think of how I could. If anyone has any suggestions it would be so appreciated.
