the ache in her back told her that she had been hunched over her microscope for much longer than she had meant to be. slide after slide, it had always been so easy to get lost in her work. especially now, with dyad and her constant double-life finally behind her for good. this was easy. this didn't keep her up until the odd hours of the morning, watching her wife sleep just in case.

her back cried out its thanks as she sat up at the sound of patrick's voice. "bonjour, patrick," delphine greeted with a smile. they'd crossed paths when she and cosima had been travelling the world, administering cures to unself-aware clones. he was beginning his career at the time, and delphine had been equally parts excited and envious. the envy had died quickly, however, and she was excited to now be working alongside him.

"i always welcome your company, mon ami." delphine sits back in her chair. "so... how goes it? are you on call tonight?"

it had always lied in the back of her mind, telling roman the truth. she'd come close more than once, but the confession had always died before it could reach her lips. the repercussions would be earth-shattering, and delphine was afraid that she would never see roman again. it was a lifelong lie, one that had started before delphine had even been born. to confess ? to go against logan roy ?

she tried to steady her breathing on the way to roman's. he'd be insistent on her immediate arrival, and there was a small nagging in her head. he knows, he knows, he knows, it sang maliciously. your career is done.

she holds a bottle of wine -- a peace offering. something to put between them. it could've been anything. she relaxed her posture and cleared her throat before she entered roman's home.

her smile only lasts a moment. she stops short as roman holds the phone out. she doesn't need to see it. the same picture hung proudly in her father's study. merde. merde. merde. delphine looks at the phone, then at roman. "i..." she falls flat. what could she even say ? was she supposed to lie ? sure, there was no way for him to know everything... but. he still knew enough. it had been in front of his face his entire life, making it all the more hidden.

she owes him something, right ?

"roman," the quiver is hair-thin, but it's there, "i am so sorry." hesitation. "i was going to tell you."

It's insane. It's batshit fucking insane. It's so insane that Roman thinks he might be on one of those hidden camera shows, and the photos he found today were photoshopped and planted by a TV crew.

But there's nobody waiting to jump out at him. When he gets home, his apartment is as empty and dark as ever. He switches on the lights and it's still empty, there's no cameras being shoved in his face, nobody yelling haha, we got you!

Just the cold, sickening, dawning realisation that he's different. Even more different than he'd ever thought.

His fridge is empty when he opens it, save for a half-empty bottle of vodka. Delphine won't mind if he's a couple of drinks deep by the time she arrives, he thinks. When he explains, he's sure she'll understand. Maybe she'll even be able to offer some insight. His stomach flipflops as he thinks about the implications of what he saw, her father rubbing shoulders with his -- well, Logan.

Did she know, all this time?

He barely feels the vodka as he swallows it down, then refills his glass.

When Delphine's buzzed in by security some time later, he's hunched over the kitchen counter, studying the picture he'd taken on his phone. It's not perfect, but it doesn't need to be because the face staring back at him is unmistakably his.

"Did you know?" he asks, without greeting her. Hi, hello, how are you? What's news? all seems so fucking pointless and inane when his life has been turned on its head.

"This." He holds out his phone without looking at her. "Our old men, best of pals. Except, oh, look." He zooms in on Logan, and holds the phone up to the side of his face. "Pretty fucking weird, huh? What is it that your dad does again?"

if they were in new york, or even paris, delphine would've been extremely opposed to a public meeting with @k4ndall. the roy name was extremely powerful, but equally heinous. she was sure some said the same thing about hers, as there was a reason her father and logan had gotten along so well. but she'd worked hard to get where she was, and leave her father and all of his ties in the past. this included the roy name.

it wasn't kendall's fault he was born into such a name. in fact, delphine remembered finding him quite kind when they'd occasionally fall into each other's orbits. regardless, her stomach twisted uncomfortably as she waited for his arrival. that was a long time ago, and they'd both lived a million lives since then. part of her hoped that the kindness had persevered, but she squashed away any expectations.

maybe she just wanted this meeting to go well -- they hadn't gone public with delphine's position yet, and she'd been advised to make as many friends as she could in the meantime. fortunately delphine had remained in good social standing since disassociating herself with her father, but today she could be making a very powerful ally.

kendall's arrival took her from her thoughts, and delphine stood and smoothed out her dress. "bonjour, kendall," she greeted, and pressed featherlight a featherlight kiss to each side of his face. she took her seat once more and sat back. "thank you for accepting my invitation. wow, i haven't seen you since..." she trailed off and looked off towards the sea pensively. "since i still stole cigarettes from my maman's clutch," she finished with a smile, and looked back at his face, "if you even remember that."
