While the name might lead you to believe otherwise, the Thermidorian Reaction actually consumed energy.

software engineering is cute because if you apply principles you learn from any other kind of engineering you get a functioning airplane or a distillation column or something. but if you try to apply the bleeding-edge software engineering techniques you learned in school in the real world you just get into fights with other people

Writing is not about 'telling an epic story' or 'making something that will outlive you'. Writing is about going "You know what would be fucking awesome?" and then committing word crimes

— Frederick Marryat, Poor Jack
I'm very happy to report that the traditional seafarer's ballad "Oh Cruel" now has a great Kate Rusby recording on Spotify!
I learned about this song when Marryat included some of the lyrics in Poor Jack, quoted above. I like Rusby's slightly different lyrics, singing "Haul away, boys, haul away" and not "tura-la, tura-la, tura-lara ley." This needs to go on every classic sea songs and shanties playlist!
Marryat's taste in music is generally good, and he was also credited with helping to revive the song "Spanish Ladies" when he included the lyrics in a popular novel.

i feel like. hmm. look. i'm a purely hobbyist, with no education or professional training in the field, so i might be talking out of my ass. but the fact that running python programs is extraordinarily sensitive to the specific installation of python you have, to the point where it now makes sense more often than not to create bespoke environments for each python program you want to run represents some kind of structural or conceptual failure. like. certainly the strength of python is the ability to create and easily use various modules/packages/whatever. but the fact that python scripts will cry and shit the bed and fail to work unless you have exactly the right little walled garden for them to frolick in seems like a problem. a fundamental failure of what is supposed to be a highly portable language. do other programming languages have this problem and i'm just not aware of it? or does it all come down to the fact that python isn't a compiled language like c++?

I have a huge dump of napoleonic doodles inspired by actual and RP events (can you tell which?). Some of these are really old (before hiatus) but I’ll just put them here since I don’t think I’ll ever be able to properly color them all😢
Also bonus Soult’s brain frying:

I love it when things are both metaphors and extremely literal. Like on one hand you have the bit in Bluest Eye where Pecola chugs milk out of a Shirley Temple mug and it makes her sick. Like she's literally and figuratively trying to consume and internalize whiteness.
and on the other hand you have half of 80s sci Fi novels like "What if the tanks kept fighting even after the war was over. Its a metaphor for Vietnam but also wouldn't that be fucked up."
