The Healing Houses
730 posts
With all those wars among Gods, all the warriors fighting for them tend to be really wary. And also, they tend to make the Healing Houses really busy. Not that I don't mind. I'm a Healer of the god Asclepius, my name is Cassandra. I am under an Hippocratic Oath. This is what I swore on when I received my Cloth.

Cassandra smiled as she recognized the young Saint. He had come some time before for his little kitten.
Tumblr media
"I am happy that your little guy got better!" She replied happily. She felt surprised as she saw the basket of cookies - she had never gotten so much as a thanks, so this was something she truly appreciated. "Thank you so much, Regulus, you really shouldn't have, but I am happy I could help you."
At his request she nodded slowly. "I cannot teach you the way of the Healer, but I can teach you just a couple of things in case your little one gets hurt again. I do have a bit of time, would you like me to start?"

@caduceusnocassandra for a starter between Regulus and Cassandra

“Hi!” Regulus approached the woman. “I want to say thank you for helping Leo out. I am really grateful! I know I was unable to say thanks last time.”
As thanks, Regulus gave her a box of cookies that he baked. “Please take this. If you have time, would you be able to teach me a few tips on how to take care of Leo? I think you are amazing that you know how to treat both saints and animals.” From what he heard, most healers only knew how to treat humans.

Cassandra tilted her head lightly on the side, thinking. And then she replied. "Yes, I am at peace here. I believe I have been at peace here for quite a while now."
It was true. SHe had found herself appreciating the somber atmosphere, the silent corridors and yes, even the Specters living there. She had become used to the place, as one does. "I willingly pledge my loyalty to you, my Lord." She did not hesitate. That was now her place - whether shadow or ghost, she would not have gone back to where she had been.
She had completed her mission and even if she was let to go back, there would be no place for her anymore. "I have more or less a month, given that I do not exhaust myself. Thank you again for accepting my request, I will have my affairs in order for when the time comes."
She would write the letter as soon as possible and send her Caduceus cloth back to Epidaurus. After that she would be fully at peace.
Cassandra nodded. "Thank you, my lord." She made a little pause - never would she have expected for a god to agree - but yet again, Epidaurus never really had a god or a godly presence, so she really did not have a proper gauge for that.
"A simple letter will be enough. I will write this down as soon as I can. I am happy for anyone to deliver." She knew what she would say. she would bid farewell, ask for her family to take care oof her cat and finally she would include her cloth and ask to be returned to Epidaurus.
It would only be fair, after all. She had not been a healer for a long time. Albeit unwillingly she had pledged allegiance to Hades, hence she was now not a servant of Asclepius anymore.
As the god told her his proposition, she considered it carefully. She took in a deep breath. Maybe that had been her path all along. She had always been under oath, she swore she'd be as impartial as possible. She was facing the idea of losing her family and friends forever.
And yet the Underworld had offered her comfort to a certain extent, when no one else had done it. No one had come to look for her after her disappearance after all. She had been abandoned and, whilst she had been trapped in hell, somehow no one had ever treated her like a hostage or a prisoner.
Thus she spoke. "I accept your offer, my Lord. I am grateful for this."

Cassandra looked a bit surprised by the God's reaction - so... trying his best to let her be comfortable maybe? Maybe this was something new, but again she did not have a gauge to refer to when it came to a god. Nevertheless, she appreciated it. She leaned on the table, thinking of what she could respond to him.
"Some of them did." She replied at the end of her mulling. She remembered some of the Specters she had encountered and nodded. THen she added: "Some others simply kept respectable distance, maybe doubtful, or maybe not knowing if they would incur in your wrath by talking to me." She squinted her eyes, as if to remember. "I believe I also saw glimpses of your kin, Hypnos and THanatos, but I don't think I ever spoke to them. I was..." and here she hesitated for a noment. "I was scared, somehow. But I only saw them at the very beginning of my stay and did not enquire much."
She made a little pause, as Hades asked her to talk about her cat. It was somehow comforting - she had missed the little creature a lot and maybe talking about him would soothe her. Again, Hades did take very good care of Cerberus, so maybe they had something in common, even though they were of two different planes. "I... My cat is named Zorba. He is a black and white cat with green eyes." She smiled tenderly at the thought. "He is the sweetest cat. He... He used to sit by my patients' bed and purr. And he... He was always by my side... Ever since I found him around the temple one particularly cold winter..."
She felt the first few tears - the first ones she had shed ever since she had been in the underworld. She quickly wiped them off. "I am sorry... I didn't mean to. I... I hope the Healers gave him back to my family at least."
She took in a deep breath. "Thank you... I miss my cat a lot. Thank you for letting me speak about him."
Cassandra looked intently at the god. Perhaps he was expecting her to be scared or angry, but she truly was not. "I have been talking to you for quite some time now, my Lord. I do understand you were trying to lighten the mood." She smiled faintly. "It has been a long time since anyone tried to make a joke. I feel happy, my Lord."
She was having once again very conflicted feelings - on one hand she was somewhere she was never supposed to be, but at the same time she had not been treated like a prisoner - even the few Specters and shadows she had met, whilst not really happy to see her, never laid a finger on her and treated her if not with kindness at least with respect.
It did come as a surprise hearing that she was a guest from Hades' mouth - she clearly remembered the first meeting and she would never have expected that from a powerful God in the first place. "I appreciate it, my Lord." All dogs are good dogs even in hell, it appeared. "Cerberus is indeed a very well trained dog. It kind of makes me miss my cat sometimes."

❝ Hmm. You did not make the noise I hear Pandora make whenever she bosses the Specters around or when she has an advantage over Saints... ❞ Or when Thanatos has an advantage over a mortal or Hypnos in a match of chess. Thinking about it, he once assumed it was human humor but the Twin Gods laugh as well.
Hades fully believes the he did it right, regardless, so he doesn't think on the why for too long. It will be meaningless for him to understand, and the god has no interest in learning why some would laugh and others won't. Cassandra, he believes, is just one who doesn't laugh.
He folds his arms as he looks down at her. ❝ Cerberus is a good dog and she has explicit orders to attack intruders and shepherd escaping souls. You're a guest here in the Underworld, so you'll be fine. ❞

Cassandra opened her mouth, closing it immediately after, as if thinking carefully about what to say next. It was difficult, after all she was face to face with the god whose death is the realm.
She slowly handed him the journal where all of her notes had been dutifully taken, and then she spoke. "I... I have nearly completed my research and, as per conditions, it is at your disposal. My favour is... Would you pleas send a sign to my family to say that I am happy and that they won't need to worry? Especially to my brother, Helenus. He is a Saint of Athena and I fear he might do something extremely stupid, if he has not done anything yet." She made a pause, then added: "Would you let me stay in a quiet corner of this realm please? I have come to appreciate the silence here."
She hoped that she was not out of line. Her strength was waning and she felt nearly at the end. It was not sickness - maybe it was what the underworld did to living things.

Cassandra did not reply for a long time. After all, what could she say to the lord of the Underworld that could move him? No, there was nothing to say. "I guess it gives us a sense of comfort. A sense that maybe we are not alone in this universe."
She shrugged lightly. "I believe it is just the excess of hope that invites disappointment and then resentment. No hope at all brings nihilism, but again it is difficult to say when it is too much or too less. At the moment I am running out of it, unfortunately."
She sighed, making a long pause. She had withered quite a bit ever since she had been there. She had a feeling, right in her bones. "I feel I might die soon, my Lord. Should this happen, may I ask for a favour, my Lord?"
Her research was after all nearly complete, but there would be no way she would be let out. And she was feeling something in her bones.

For a long moment Cassandra held her breath - maybe she had been out of line, all sorts of things went through her head as Hades was telling her about death by Cerberus.
After all, she still was facing a God and he was so much more powerful than her.
She did let out a small sigh of relief as soon as Hades told her he was joking and whilst she still was very unsure, she did appreciate the fact that maybe, just maybe, a god had made a joke. She nodded. "Thank you, my Lord. I appreciate the joke."
It had been a long time since someone had done that in any measure after all, and whilst Cassandra was not able to laugh, she was indeed able to appreciate small gestures.
I will not run. (Cassandra)
Tumblr media
Hades compared her to a small animal whenever he looked at her. He won't claim she's by any means incapable of defending herself because she's only been around the Underworld for her own deeds and god that posed no harm to him. A near-humorless chuckle escaped him, despite him being straight-faced.
❝ I'd hope not. I would have to send Cerberus after you if you did. You'd perhaps be caught between her teeth before you manage to find an exit out of the Underworld. ❞ There's no telling how his large dog would maul the woman if she tried to escape, even though she was a living being.
Long, long moments pass by. Monotonously, Hades speaks again:
❝ ...I jest. ❞

❝ The human desire to hope is a strange one. ❞ Hades said as he frowned at her. Hades can recall Athena telling him something along the same lines whenever they confronted each other. Even love was fickle—why hold onto concepts that will invite suffering and uncertainty at all?
❝ Hope invites disappointment, and disappointment to resentment. Why do you cling to such fickle desires so desperately? Is it because you serve Asclepius? ❞

VERSES - The various verses I can set a roleplay for
I thought I would give a more in-depth background about the verses I have, I hope this is helpful.
LIFE AT EPIDAURUS - MAIN
Tumblr media
Cassandra is an accomplished Healer at the Epidaurus Temple, bearing the Cloth of the Caduceus. She takes care of all the injured and sick people around the temple - not only that. As she is under oath she is bound to heal all Saints from all existing orders, regardless of the god they follow and believe in. She occasionally travels back to Athens to see her family, mum, dad and her twin brother Helenus, the Bronze Saint of the Sextans.
HELL'S QUEST - UNDERWORLD/HADES/SPECTRES
Tumblr media
Cassandra, upon suspecting too much about her boss, the Great Healer, who seems to have placed a fake Staph into Asclepius’ temple instead of the real one, is sent to Hell in Hades’ realm for a mission that seems impossible for literally everyone. She undertakes the mission, in order to a) challenge herself, b) demonstrate to the other orders of Saints that Healers are not useless and c) so she can go back to Epidaurus and have some serious backup on her investigation and hopefully proof that the Staph in the reliquiarium is fake. So far things are stuck at the very beginning. Hades has trapped her in, however it does appear that he has taken her as a protégée of sorts. She still has a lot of mixed feelings about being in the Underworld, but she is slowly resigning herself to being there forever.
BERSEKER'S RAID - ANGST
The Temple of Asclepius has been attacked and raided by Ares’ warriors, the Bersekers. Panic has spread, all her comrades seem to have vanished, while she’s run to ask for help. She has to run away with Asclepius' Staph under request of the Great Healer and she has gone to ask for help and her first place to go is the Sanctuary. After all Athena's Saints are those who fight for peace and justice, she may have a chance to be listened to.
THE SEARCH - OMEGA!VERSE
Older Cassandra - she’s now around 40 years old - is heading to the Sanctuary to help out the Saints in healing their injured comrades, after a request made by a Gold Saint. She’s also looking out for her own brother and family, knowing that they were more i danger than her.

Hope is a fickle, dangerous thing.
"And yet, my lord, it is what keeps us human."
Tumblr media
Cassandra replied faintly, raising her head from the heavy tome she had been reading. "It is said that hope was underneath all in Pandora's vase. We may suffer, but we hold onto something." Probably that was a very human reasoning, but since she had been in the Underworld she had had to keep going somehow.

Fourth Wing Ask Meme (Part 1)
An assortment of quotes from Rebecca Yarros' novel "FOURTH WING." Some phrases have been altered for the sake of clarity for this purpose.
There's nowhere in existence you could go that I wouldn't find you.
Hope is a fickle, dangerous thing.
I would rather lose this entire war than live without you.
If that means I have to prove myself over and over, then I'll do it.
You gave me your heart, and I'm keeping it.
Fascinating.
You look all frail and breakable.
You're really a violent little thing, aren't you?
I'm going to keep you. You're mine.
I've been yours for longer than you could ever imagine.
Oh, gods.
Which one are you calling out for?
It's just you and me in here, [NAME].
I don't share.
I am the sky and the power of every storm that has ever been.
I am infinite.
Lies are comforting. Truth is painful.
There's nothing more sacred than the archives.
Temples can be rebuilt.
I will not run.
I will not die today.
I wouldn't be standing here if I'd quit every time something seemed impossible to overcome.
The right way isn't the only way.
You are not attracted to toxic men.
Yet here I am, getting all attracted.
None of this is worth it without you.
Don't borrow tomorrow's trouble.
You're making us look bad. Stop it.

Well, that was awkward.
It turned out to be someone she actually did not know. She raised her hands. "Oh, I am sorry. I thought you' were someone I knew, but it turns out I was wrong!"
She shook her head lightly. "I am not hurt either." She looked around a little, then added: "Maybe I am a bit lost. I have never been to this place."
She felt a little uncertain - she was painfully aware that anything related to Saints and Healers and gods were not exactly common knowledge. "I am a travelling doctor, my name is Cassandra. As I said, I thought you'd be someone I knew. I am sorry if I scared you."
Not exactly a lie, but explaining that she was a servant of Asclepius, a Healer helping Saints of order who were faithful to gods like Athena and that yes, those gods existed and walked the earth as of now was a little bit too much to digest.
She felt genuinely sorry and she was hoping that the apology would be accepted.
New old friends
@chopperpirate
Cassandra had been travelling for quite some time now. After having consulted the High Healer, she caught the suggestion that she should travel for a while to widen her knowledge.
And she had taken the advice to heart.
She was now walking around the port of a city unknown to her - and yet so familiar, she could see glimpses of her own hometown. She felt at ease.
It was then that she caught a glimpse of something - or better, someone. She thought she knew who it was, so she followed. She also mentally thanked the gods that her cloth now conveniently sat in form of a pendant so she did not have to carry around a pandora box anymore, thus making her faster in movements.
She turned around the last corner and she saw someone she might or might not have known. And smiled. "Hi?" she waved at the little creature with a little bit o9f uncertainty.
