at a conference I attended recently, a researcher pointed to the difficulty of finding material in archives because so much depends on the metadata and the terminology used to describe things changes over time. "it would be so helpful," the researcher said, "if I typed 'lesbian' into the library of congress database, it would also show me results that were categorised in the 50s, when the materials were interpreted as 'intimate female friendships'"

which is what tag wrangles at Archive Of Our Own do incredibly effectively: searching for "omegaverse" also leads to "alpha/beta/omega dynamics" and "alternate universe: a/b/o" and so on. but ao3 achieves this frankly incredible categorisation and indexing system by the power of countless volunteers putting in hours and hours of unpaid and unthanked free time, and it's completely understandable that most archives do not have that kind of infrastructure, but also how incredible that a fan-run website has better searchability, classification, and accessibility than the library of congress

It is one of these fanfics where Draco is not allowed to use his wand because of what he did in the war (for a certain time) and Harry is the one safe keeping it. Draco just wanted to twiddle with it to pass the time.

Counter to that anon - i dont think you have to have a reason to distain one dynamic and like the other. I personally don't get (and therefore am a little repulsed by) the idea of a dominant suave rich man (and a lot of draco!tops drarry fics make draco have no flaws which is like,,, he doesnt feel like a person (to me)). And of course the opposite can be true - anyone can dislike minutiae about the opposite dynamic or not buy into the overarching archetype or specifically like the archetype i dont like (like they like that archetype of that suave rich man as a protector of the protag - who has always had to fight for themselves).

You know that old post that's like "your ship is you x person you find hot" and then further the idea that "your ship is you x you"? I think a lot of shipping is just a play on how you identify with each character in each ship and what dynamics you enjoy (or are at least neutral/withstanding of for the plot). The obsession of saying other people are wrong for liking my squick or squicking my like is.... well i dont really understand the moral grandstanding or insisting that your interpretation of a character or a dynamic is the only right interpretation.

I think the issue here is that people tend to forget we are talking about fictional characters and fictional settings most of the time. (Fictional interests does not always translate to real life. I like questionable trope and incest pairs - Exhibit A: Draco / Lucius - but that does not mean that I support or advocate for incest in real life)

There is also the fact that people take some things personally. I have a hunch, that anon likes / prefers bottom Harry and they cannot understand how someone can hate what they like.

But hey what we do in our down time is ours. We should not have to explain / defend our interests and preferences. We should also not let people to guilt us just because our moral does not fit into theirs (unless our morales are really fucked up, then it is time for a self assessment)

being that upset at encountering bottom harry fics in an open fandom space is not normal. it’s literally the same ship. the sex roles should not change the dynamic of the characters outside of sex scenes and if you do that then you’re a freak fyi

I know I do not have to justify my taste to strangers on the Internet but it has nothing to do with bottom harry (in fact I only avoid bottom Harry in drarry spaces and as a matter of fact I am working on a Harry × Theo fic with, guess what? Bottom harry!) and everything to do with my memories around those fics.

When I first started reading drarry fics I was at a pretty bad place in life. I devoured fic after fic to cope with whatever was happening in real life. I used to read and re-read Far from the Tree like crazy. I was actively into Bottom Harry fics in drarry spaces.

I took a short break from fandom just as life started looking up and I came back to the fandom and explored other ships as opposed to my drarry fixation.

When I made my way back to drarry again, I found that bottom harry fics (my comfort place in dark times) reminded me of those times. It makes me upset, it makes me physically sick. SO I AVOID IT (instead of going to the comments and making a scene and preach to the author about tagging and stuff. I know that some authors don't tag intentionally and I also get why they wouldn't!)

You can read my post and assume whatever you may want about me. Call me a freak. Think that you are oh so noble for reminding the freak that this is an open space and that the freak cannot nitpick whatever the freak wants to read in the freak's free time in an open fandom space.

I am not here spreading a hate agenda against sex roles or ship dynamics. I am just expressing my frustration that even after taking precaution, I am encountering things that I'd rather avoid. (The filters and tags are there for a reason!)
