Anywho, this is a scene from my longfic, With Civil Hearts and Hands, in which Connor investigates the mysterious disappearances of several androids with the help of a human leader of an underground android society, aka Clara.

I'm having a lot of fun figuring out a better shading style, and I'm honestly quite pleased with this one.

I finally got a chance to finish this one! It's been sitting in my folders since like January, just languishing, but now it's done! I took a few minutes to fix some of the lineart, and then spent like goodness knows how many hours coloring. Bonus points because this is like the first real background I've done, and I'm actually pretty happy with how it turned out, even though it's a little messy. Now I just have to write a little nutcracker spinoff for my darlings.

Yay! Story time!

So, I used to work customer service at Home Depot, and when the order pullers were behind, I'd help them out too. One day, I was bouncing between service desk and order fulfillment, and I found a praying mantis in one of the plants in the garden center. I didn't want someone to freak out and kill it, so I picked it up and put it in my apron pocket, intending to release it somewhere safer behind the store, but then I got called back to the service desk because they were backed up on returns.

So, I walked back to the service desk with the mantis still in my pocket and took my spot at a register, and that's where things got fun. You see, this mantis was hellbent on climbing all the way up my apron, so periodically, I would have to gently deposit him back into my apron pocket. Usually, I managed to grab it before it got high enough for the customers to see, but there was this one guy that I was helping, and he had a bigger return, so it was taking longer, and the mantis got like all the way up to the top of my apron, and the absolute look of horror on this man's face about killed me. He didn't say anything about the frickin giant mantis crawling up my front, but he definitely watched it as it got higher and higher. And I, without missing a beat, gently plucked my little mantis friend and stuck him back in my apron pocket, and asked this man if he wanted his receipt. He did not, and we never acknowledged the mantis, but I still think about it sometimes and wonder what he was thinking.

i like working at plant store. sometimes you ring up someone and there's a slug on their plant and so you're like "Oh haha you've got a friend there let me get that for you" and you put the slug on your hand for safekeeping but then its really busy and you dont have time to take the slug outside before the next customer in line so you just have a slug chilling on your hand for 15 minutes. really makes you feel at peace with nature. also it means sometimes i get to say my favorite line which is "would you like this free slug with your purchase"
