beware of the woods
when you go hiking, be kind and respectful. tread carefully and do not disturb the creek too much. pick up the trash that catches on the branches and break up the debris that clogs up the waterways. be careful not to step on new plants, just barely poking out from beneath the ground.
the trees will moan in the wind as it speaks, always stop to listen. give thanks to the tree you hold on to when you go down a hill.
when you come to a ravine, look for a fallen tree. it is best if you cross over it rather than walk through yourself. that or go around. if you must, you can walk through, but apologize when you do. be wary not to disturb the leaf litter too much or what lurks beneath it may grow angry.
tread not on the mud bees’ hives in the winter. they will seek revenge come the thaw.
if everything in your body tells you something is wrong, leave. you are not wanted and you should respect that.
do not pluck the new buds. their gardener will not be happy.
be wary when you walk through a bed of ferns. what lurks in their shadows will not hesitate to bite if you step too close.
do not chase the shadow you saw in the corner of your eye. it is a watcher. you do not mess with them. ever.
leave corn for the deer and what other things might scamper around hungrily. they’ll appreciate it and might thank you later.
if you spot a songbird within a forest’s depths, you are lucky. those are a kind that do not like to be seen. you should leave quickly after lest they get too friendly.
sit beneath the tree from whose roots flow a spring, whose branches sprawl toward the sky and whose heaving trunk gives home to many a thing. sit at its base. close your eyes, take a breath, whisper kind words to those who watch you, then bid farewell. it’s time to leave.
walk carefully, make sure everything is how it was when you first arrived, then walk home. do not turn around as you walk. no matter what you hear, you do not turn around. there is something behind you, whether you feel it or not. if you turn around, it’s an invitation for it to continue following.
hold your breath when you reach your porch and do not let it out until the door is closed and locked.

“It’s too easy, you see, to get trapped in the past. The past is very seductive. People always talk about the mists of time, you know, but really it’s the present that’s in a mist, uncertain. The past is quite clear, and warm, and comforting. That’s why people often get stuck there.” - Susanna Kearsley
