Materials matter. Task 3
Production diary
Equipment:
canon 600 Tripod
This project was about what the north means to me and therefore in had to make a mind map of places I enjoy to visit and what it means to me. After I decided what and where to shoot I went to the locations around the coastline near to where I live, some areas I went to include St Marys lighthouse, Tynemouth Longsands, Tynemouth Priory, Newcastle City (Northumberland street and the bridges over the River Tyne). Before I shot I went to these locations to see if they were suitable to shoot prior to me taking all the equipment down and start to film. I chose the location because I grew up next to the coast and have lots of memories of visiting as a child and I still walk along the coast. Newcastle is my home city and the place where I like to go shopping and socialise a lot with friends and family.
6th October: I took out a canon 600 D, Tripod, two batteries and a battery charger so I could begin to film over the weekend on the my north video.
8th October: I went down to the coast and began to shoot my video. I shot Tynemouth Longsands in the afternoon and in the evening I shot Tynemouth Priory.
9th October: I took my footage I had captured and began to edit and put together my video however I didn't have enough footage so I took out the same equipment t shoot son the 10th October.
10th October: on my day off I went to Northumberland street in Newcastle around 2pm to record the streets and shops. I chose this as this is what I enjoy when going to Newcastle. after shooting I went home but then came back at night to record the bridges in the dark as they are all lit and make the quayside look much nicer.
11th October: I added all the footage I recorded on the 10th October to my video and it was starting to look good now. I also added some music in the background to shut the shots vow the coast. however, I still didn't have enough footage to to get all 60 seconds, so for the final time I took out another canon 600 D home to prepare another shooting session.
12th October: I took the camera to St Marys Lighthouse. I relay like St Marys Lighthouse as it is a nice place to walk around and see nature. I shot some videos of the lighthouse and of lots of rock-pools and animals around.
13th October: The last day to complete the video all together. I added the footage from the lighthouse and it was complete. I looked over it a few times to make sure all the footage was clear and the music went all wit the clips used.

Materials matter. Task 4
To get to the end of the 'my north' project I had to do lots of research to get information and even to inspire me so I could make the best video i could on my north.
When I was researching I used lots of research methods such as the internet, books and people's views on the north. This all helped me get the information I needed to make my video as I looked at some of the best places around the north. I chose the locations what mean a lot to me and also other people who live around the north. For example the bridges as they are one of the most if not the most famous landmarks in the north and so they mean a lot to me and lots of others as they in my opinion represent the north especially Newcastle. However I did film something that means a lot more to to me and that is the coast line (Tynemouth,Cullercoats,Whitley bay) as I have grown up next to the coast all my life and this is what the north really means to me.
When I was filming i also needed to use different camera angles such as long shot, close up,pan shot. I chose the shots carefully, so if I wanted to focus on one thing, for example a rock pool I used a close up just to focus on one thing however when I wanted to get a lot of things in example Tynemouth beach I used a long shot to get the whole view in and get the best shot.
When I was researching all my location and landmarks around the north this did inspire me as I got lots of Ideas when researching and wanted to get outside and record my video straight away. However i couldn't yet because I still needed to more information on the north and other location and then i needed to go to each location to see if it is safe to film there. When I finished all my research i went straight outside and recorded. When I was recording it makes me more aware of the nature and how beautiful place can be when you stop and look at them well for example the bridges at night when they are all lit up and reflecting onto the river below them. I also I went to st Mary's lighthouse and recording the rock pools seeing all the small living animals and different rocks around the place. That is what I enjoyed about recording the my north video the most.

Materials matter. Task 2
In this course we will need to research lots of things for projects and activities we are going to be set and so it is quite important to know the best ways to research to get the best and most accurate information. Some types of research are the internet, books and documentaries.
primary research involves gathering new data that has not been collected before. For example, surveys using questionnaires or interviews with groups of people in a focus group while secondary research involves the summary, collation of existing research rather than primary research, in which data are collected from, for example, research subjects or experiments.
some primary research methods are interviews, surveys and focus groups. These are all primary methods because a company or an individual is interviewing a person or getting information from a large amount of people in a servay and it is all new information the company or individual could use. secondary research methods would be getting all the information the business has collected from the interviews or surveys to use as it is not new information and they are getting it second hand. however they may have too play to get this information from the original company and it might be old information as-well.
We done some primary research our self at college where we were giving a conspiracy theory and we had to go ask people what there views are on the theory. This is primary research as we are talking to the person first hand and therefore getting it straight from the source. But first we had to find out more about the conspiracy and so we went on the internet to fund out more. This is a secondary research as it could have been passed on through the years and it was not form the time. If we went to the library and picked out a book then that would had been primary but only of it was published when the theory was happening at the time and has not been published around recent times.
However there are also more primary research methods we can do. For example a reece This is going out on location and taking photos and observing the location where you are choosing to film something so you can look at the risks and how to stay safe on that location. This is classed as primary research as it is you collecting the information yourself and and not getting it from a second source. This is useful as it's you looking at the location so you know how safe you need to be however the location can cabinet due to weather what could effect your filming so it is always best to check the location more than once.
But there can be methods that are both primary and secondary research. An example of this could be observation of someone this can be primary because you are observing someone with your own eyes and you can see when they are doing you don't have anyone telling you about them or what they are doing. However this can also be secondary research like big brother where they are always bring recorded in the house but they only show the best bits on TV and so it has been edited and no longer primary research.
To conclude you always need it do research because it can really help you achieve good work and it can even keep you safe. However you do need to be careful about what data is correct and what is not and it's normally the internet that tells you the wrong information.

Materials matter. Task 1
When I first started this course I didn't have much experience in editing, recording sound and filming. I had edited a little bit on images when in was doing my media course work at AS level but that was the only knowledge I had. However i have now got more confidence and have a much better understanding on how to edit and record.
The first thing we were told to do was to record sound with task cams. We were told how to set them up and how it record sound with them. we practice using them first then we got set a task to watch a clip of a movie which had been muted and then record our own sounds and dialog with the task cams what we think is happening in the clip. This gave us more experience using sound equipment and was more difficult than I expected. After getting the audio we then got the video clip and editied the audio and dialog on to the clip. We used editing tools such as the razor tool and selection tool to select a sound and put it in the correct place where we think the sound goes well in. This gave me more skills so I can now edit clips and add audio when I want to add it.
Another task we were given was to make a 30 second video about yourself called me myself and I (on my page). I recorded myself for 15 seconds talking about my interest in live music, after talking about my interest in music I added videos of band's i have seen live for the remaining 15 seconds. This task also helped me get better at editing as I added all the clips in and cut them down to the time i wanted them to be, I added text on to the clips that needed to be correct so they don't show to early or late or even overlap the other text on the other clips so it took a lot of precision to get it correct.
In this course we also need to be very careful when using equipment and just being round in the studio and so we had to look at a set up studio and Identify all the hazards and how we can avoid them and not hurt our self or the public when using the equipment. Some things that are very important if we are filming are to tape down wire so none trips on them, don't have any liquids next to electrical equipment incase you spill it as it will damage or even set fire to the equipment and if you are using a boom don't let it hit people as this will hurt them therefore keep it high in the air but also low enough to pick up the sound in the recordings. It is also very important to know the health and safety when working in the media profession so when you go into business you don't make any silly mistakes that can get you fired or get the company sued.

One thing In film is that movie genres normally need specific things to make them that genre e.g horror need to scare the audience and a comedy needs to make the audience laugh. If a film genre doesn't do what it's supposed to do then it will fail. I will now compair two film trailer and talk about the typical genre features and what is a little bit different about that film.
The first trailer i am going to talk about is star wars the force awakens. Star wars is a sifi film and therefore will contain features such as a futuristic setting, space, spaceships, lasers and advanced technology. If star wars or even any other sifi film didn't have these conventions then it wouldn't be classed as a sifi and fans will be annoyed at the film and could lead it to be a failure.
The second movie I am going to talk about is James Bond Skyfall. This movie is an action movie as it contain conventions such as explosions, men in suits, fast cars, vilonce and guns. Every single Acton movie you wach will have most of these conventions in as they need to be to make it clear it is an action movie. Another thing with Acton movies is that they keep you on the edge of your seat as you are always waiting to see what happens next. E.g the villain is going to kill someone or is there going to be a big twist at the end of the film.
However not all films stick to there genres. Some movies change it up like James bond. The start of skyfall used the song skyfall by Adele and This is a very slow song for an action movie as almost every bit of music in Acton films are upbeat and go with the action but in skyfall the film has a slow start with slow music when people think bond dies. This goes against the action conventions.
Some films can follow the same plot or have the same conventions and it doesn't matter what genre the films are.In both star wars the force awakens and James bond skyfall there is a plot twist what get people shocked and hooked. In skyfall at the beginning and watch the film to find out if he did die or not. In star wars the shock was the one of the key character in star wars dies unexpectedly this would get everyone talking and the audience will respond differently but either way this will get more people talking about it so more people will go see it. Another thing similar is the plot and how both films are about a group or a person trying to take down the enemy. This is what lots of films are about even if they have different genres.
So to conclude movies have got to have a genre and follow the normal convention or the film will probably fail. However they do not have go stick to the same genre throughout the whole film and can add some other genre convention in to make it more interesting and even get a bigger audience.
Another important thing about movies is the way it is shot and what camera angles they use to shoot a film. We went to see a short movie called arrmagetton and it was a film about a few man men setting up chairs in one of the most dangerous places in the world. In this short film the used a range of lighten and camera angles to get the best film the can. They uses lots of camera angles such as close up and extreme close up to get all the detail on the people faces to see the emotion. They also use a medium shot to show the sun rise and a few chairs in the picture and finally a long shot to get the big picture of what is happening. They also used low key lighting to make it look more dark considering it is one of the most dangerous places in the world.
