In making concrete or mortar, water is needed to harden the cement binder. To obtain a certain workability / flow an excess of water is used / needed. This excess water lowers considerably the strength of the concrete / mortar, increases the porosity and shrinkage and reduces the durability of the mortar orconcrete.In order to achieve a concrete / mortar with high or ultra high strength paired to a good flow, binder ratio and grading of fillers are optimized. This enhances the workability and the mass is better compacted.Use of “superplasticizers” is mandatory. It reduces the water to cement ratio and improves the rheology , flowability and workability of the mortar / concrete. It also facilitates the use of fibers in order to increase ductility.All this improves strength and durability of the mortar / concrete.
