Wylan is flip flopping on what he’s going to seat Luigi into. Speed? Off roading? The latter can be amusing if done correctly even if it may prevent him from getting into the lead. Getting blue and red shells to harass people in front of him (i.e. Kanami) is tempting as well. Eventually he decides on something haphazardly thrown together with the standard atv before letting fate and luck of the random pick the course.

Her words ring hollow to him, as someone who just like her has a hard divide between his private and professional lives. It’s wishful thinking to keep those things separate. It’s possible, but he doubts she’s steeled herself in such a way to handle it like he has.

“Heeeeeh? So, what, should I find you boring? I’m around Kanami more than I am Kanamin. And yet I find myself bugging you and being around you–” the most, lets not say that. “more than most people. I think you’re telling yourself a tall tale. That personality comes from somewhere. That energy and whatnot. You really shouldn’t take yourself lightly.”

"I never said that," she intones as the game juggles between its potential choices. She didn't like some of them, and under normal circumstances wouldn't go anywhere near the cup that featured the course. In some ways, that hesitation to go where you didn't like was a good mirror to the world she faced: her comfort zone - the Kanami zone - was the courses she played all the time and knew well; the courses she avoided - anything Wario themed, the old-style Bowser's castle - were the Kanamin zone, she knew them (and the zone) but she wasn't comfortable. The roulette slows and finally stops on Moo-Moo Meadows before Kanami can find her words.

At least the in-game roulette was rooting for Kanami (unlike Wylan).

"You don't have to find me boring. I just don't think you know what you're saying. Kanamin is a thing I can do, like an act. Thinking that it comes from somewhere deeper is setting yourself up for disappointment..." Her words feel stale in her mouth even as she says them, like she knows it's not all true.

A candle is already lit when she gets there - her grandparents, early in the morning via a city-country bus that Kanami uses to go see them - but she still lights her own. The two candles, one pink and one blue, sparkle in the dim evening light as she settles down on her knees in front of the small shrine.

Not far from her, at the temple that takes care of the graveyard, people rustle about, looking for an ideal place to hang a wish. Kanami had already wished on a bamboo. It was the same wish as every year: “please let me be my best self”.

The girl digs into the obi tying her plain kimono and pulls out an ema plaque. There’s a short wish for happiness and luck, nothing major. She signed it as “your daughter” because it’s not going to a shrine for a god of any kind, it’s going to rest here, on the stone that marks the resting place of her parents.

She plants a gentle kiss on the plaque before resting between the two candles so that the message faces outward. Then she sits back and watches the candlelight flicker on the names carved into the stone.

After a moment she presses her palms together and brings her hands up to her face. The tears are falling gently onto her lap as she whispers, “Mom, Dad... Happy anniversary.”

[[I just found a post about Kanami’s crocs (because OP is WTFing at them) and all I know is that she’s good at being comfortable.

As someone who owns bright yellow crocs because she cosplayed the sunshine child, I can say without a doubt that they are comfortable.
