                apologetic   is    her    tone,    fumbling    with    the    red    skirt   of    her    attire,    Tsubaki    remains    standing    a    few   feet    behind    the    stranger,    and    in    the    dim   light    of    the    full    moon,    only    their    cloaked   silhouette    is    visible    to    her,    lit    up    from   time    to    time    by    the    flames    of    the    fire   dancers    below.    While    the    spectacle    is    definitely   something    to    behold,    Tsubaki    prefers    solitude    to   large    crowds    gathered    below    the    rooftop    to   witness    the    autumn    festival.    And    there    is    also   the    fact    that    she    is    currently    searching    for   her        energetic    companion,    long    lost    in    the   ocean    of    fire    nation    citizens    celebrating.

❛  …  maybe you do,  but i don’t.  ❜  he knows what she’s talking about,  is familiar with the heaviness on his shoulders that he’s never once put down.  in a way,  she sounds like amu                                               optimistic,  kind,  one to ramble a little too much for anything coherent to come out of it.  and if he was to be honest,  if he was to scrape away a layer of that glacier that’s come to wrap around him like a cocoon,  he’d tell her the words are comforting even if he doesn’t catch most of it.  he’d tell her thanks for the reassurance with the barest of smiles,  one dipped in a teasing color just to lighten the mood.  if it was a different situation,  maybe he would’ve even given her a problem or two of his  (  the problems that weigh heavy,  heavy,  heavy on his shoulders  ;  atlas in the form of a teenaged boy roped into a dog eat dog eat dog world  ).    except this isn’t a different situation,  and he has no reason to melt away the walls he keeps around himself.  as far as he’s concerned,  they are coworkers with a similar goal,  and he is a wild animal leashed to a selfish organization intent on wringing him dry.  ❛  just so you know,  this is only temporary. i don’t really have any intentions on getting tangled up with something unnecessary.  ❜  he turns towards the hallway,  head tilting towards the dark.  ❛  and there’s something up ahead,  if you want to go check it out.  ❜

                          She    feels    herself    deflate   a    bit    (    encouraging    words    are    all    she    can  offer    towards    the    boy    with    the    blue    hair   and    somber    eyes    ),    still,    she    keeps    herself  steady    and    standing,    dares    even    to    take    a   few    steps    towards    Ikuto,    slowly    and    soundlessly,   as    if    she    feared    he    would    lash    out    if    she  took    him    by    surprise    (    blackstar    usually   does    –    he    doesn’t    like    being    caught    off   guard    ).    nails    press    into    her    palms,    an   old    habit    that    shows    a    bit    of    anxiety    –   she    doesn’t    know    what    to    say    when    he   falls    silent    again,    like    he’s    decided    those   to    be    his    final    words    and    no    other    attempt   at    communication    is    made.

                   But    then,    he    speaks    again,   and    his    statement    quirks    a    brow    from    Tsubaki,   eyes    that    were    cast    to    her    shoes    now    raise   to    meet    Ikuto    (    there    is    something    akin   to    indifference    in    his    gaze    –    does   he    not    care?    ),    and    as    he    says   it    –    unnecessary    –    Tsubaki    grows   slightly    confused,    enough    so    to    murmur,    “    i   mean    …    i    thought    it    would    be    important    to   you    .        you    were    part    of    this    before    me   and    blackstar    arrived,    so    i    just    assumed    –   ”    voice    is    cut    by    his    quiet    remark;    senses  try    to    adjust    to    the    dark    quicker,    and    she  reaches    for    her    weapon,    “    i    don’t    hear   -    i    guess    your    hearing    is    better    than    mine   …   ”

               there    is    hesitation    in   acknowledging    the    other’s    words    (    it’s    not   a    matter    of    pride,    but    of    responsibility    thrust   upon    her    shoulders    from    an    early    age    ).   Tsubaki    thinks,    even    if    she    doesn’t    realize   it,    that    she    must    protect    everybody    around    her   –    must    take    care    of    everybody    the    way    she  would    her    meister    (    even    if    he    does    not  need    it,    either    ).    to    have    almost    failed   to    protect    Yukako    weights    heavily    on    Tsubaki’s   conscience    as    the    other    finishes    cleaning   her    cuts    and    gashes,    abdomen    wrapped    up    in   fabric    precariously    made    into    bandages.    

                        “    you    could’ve    gotten   hurt    as    well.    as    part    of   the    academy,    i’m    supposed    to    protect    all   civilians    –    ”        she    sounds    quite    a    bit   like    Maka    at    the    moment    (    they    seem   to    share    that    perpetual    weight    of    being    the   responsible    ones;    Soul    has    said    so   before    )    .    and    as    she    exhales    heavily,   Tsubaki    nibbles    on    the    inside    of    her    cheek,   dull    fingernails    press    into    her    palms    enough    to  cause    a    sting    (    a    childhood    habit,    she   thought    it    long    gone    ),    “    it’s    just    …   i    simply    need    to    be    stronger    –    so    there  won’t    be    a    next    time.    ”    decisiveness    is   visible    in    her    eyes;    she’s    already    trying    to   stand    up    despite    her    injuries,    “    miss    yukako  …    i’m    sorry    that    i    put    you    in    danger   …    !    ”    palms    are   pressed    together,    as    if    praying    the    other   girl    will    forgive    her    for    it,    “and    thank   you    so    much    for    the    bandages    !    ”
