This week was very fun and enjoyable. I really enjoyed seeing CJ get her shine on and recognition! I enjoyed the brand game a lot. To be quite honest I thought that this class “Visual Communication” was going to be about how branding and logos speak to the audience of companies. I thought it was how something like a Nike check makes you think of that brand and how the phrase “Just do it” is known and heard around the globe. I didn’t know it was focused on history and how we talk about the gaze. I still enjoy this course I just came in with a different mindset or I would say thoughts of this class.
Tumblr media
The fact that we finally talked about branding and brand names was very exciting for me cause that’s what I’m most excited about as a PR major. Media and business light a fire beneath me and gets me excited for what my future holds for me. I started off as a business manager so advertising is also something I am passionate about because I get to show my creative skills to the public.
I would say a brand that has a lifestyle tie to it is skims or Starbucks. I say this because both make me feel like I am living a life of luxury and make me feel like “that girl!” which we all aspire to be.
MacBook makes me feel like a business woman because it fits you into a stereotypical lifestyle that makes you appear put together. To me it’s not about feeling seen by others it is more about what makes me feel confident and fabulous.
Tumblr media
I wouldn’t say that supporting a brand means you support their values. Just because I support my friends does not mean I agree with them

Now you see me, now you don't.
Tumblr media
This picture is from when I went to my favorite brunch spot in Buckhead. On the top you can see the road division markers but in the bottom photo you see no indicator of division. In the original photo you can see on the top right that there are power lines whereas the bottom I removed the top of the power lines.
Tumblr media
Now when I take away the taller buildings a lot changes. By taking away the skyscraper buildings I automatically trick the eye of the viewer. We use see skyscrapers you think Atlanta, New York etc. but then I took away these major points in the photo I automatically take away the pinpoint of scenery. This could now be anywhere. I don't believe that photographers should totally have control of things like this when it comes to news. I say this because this causes misinformation and confusion. This takes away from the reality and manipulates the viewer.
I think that photographers should hav control of what they take but not be able to take things away from the art if it is being presented in things like the news. It will end up becoming a big ball of controversy like the skull photo. I think they should be able to zoom in and out of what they want but not be able to remove or add things like on an editing app.
Text plays a big part in "proper" framing because if it's what the originator/ creator says then no one should be able to misconstrue the true definition. Adding text to things adds explanation, time periods, and more detail. Context is everything because everyone sees everything differently but if the photographer gives everyone the same context then everyone will be able to come to a conclusion on their own based on similar knowledge.

Rumination Week 6
This week we talked about the gaze and perspective. We dove into how to control what your audience sees. Whether you edit the picture or your position it in a way that they see only what you want them to see. In class we watched a video where a guy explained how to position the camera or an object to make it appear how you want it to be shown. One I thought was cool was the one where he made the stuffed bear the same height as the guy who was way taller in real life.
Tumblr media
In these photos you will see how we positioned these photos to look as though they appear to be something they are not. Almost as though they could be edited to be true. We did not edit these pictures but we POSITIONED these picture layouts. We found a way to make people believe or THINK one thing when it's completely the opposite.
Tumblr media
Using my friend and classmate as another example of photo positioning and photographic realism I placed her toward the halfway point of the hill and put her leg up to make it seem as though she was kicking the globe over as the guy on top was walking up in the other direction. Out of all of our other trials this one had to be my favorite because it looks more accurate and thought out than the other where we are not perfectly aligned with the subject.
Tumblr media
I also like this image because it feeds off of the image realism. It appears to be something that it is not but it is more than meets the eye. My group and I really enjoyed trying to find different angles and lighting that make our viewers eyes wonder how something is really portrayed.

P2P # 6
I chose this picture and pose because I thought it would be cool to make it look as though I was lifting the glove outside of the Social Science building. Although it’s not perfect you still get the vision. I would say this phot shows you that even though I am way smaller than the real size of the globe the position I am standing in plays a big part in how I finesse your eyes through a camera lens. I am almost in control of what your eyes see and believe.

Week 5 Rumination
I decided to write a rumination on this week's reading because it was more relatable as a woman than the other readings. This week's reading was about The 'Afghan Girl' who was used as a poster child and the "cover girl" of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Later known as Sharbat Gula.
In class we were asked to make a piece of art that represented the term "Orientalism" which was described as "beautiful suffering". I chose to draw a similar picture to the artwork drawn by Cecelia Paredes titled Both Worlds. I chose this one to compare to 'Afghan Girl' because although they're present their realities are hidden behind art to mute them and amplify their beauty.
Tumblr media
Another thing we discussed was the Female spectatorship and Femme Fatale. I personally believe that the term "housewife" has changed morally because the respect for women has shifted as well as the respect women have for themselves. I believed that over time women have become more than the average housewives proving we can be business owners, join armed forces, and be more than treated as the at home help.

One thing I can definitely say about my generation's women is that we get ish done and make a way out of no way. We don't take no for an answer and fight more than ever. When I first saw the picture of the woman on the ground in this week's slides I automatically saw her as powerful by the glance/ cut of her eyes as she looked past the camera. She exudes an assertive energy that is extremely powerful. Which also leads me back to the 'Afghan Girl' because in both photos the eyes are what grasps your attention. The pain in a hurt woman's eyes is very compelling. Women now are more dominant than ever before.

I went to Buckhead to visit my favorite brunch spot for my chicken & waffles and they weren’t making them that day 🥺 so I had to settle for their amazing waffles.

things I’ve learnt from university:
“do I want to die or do I just have something due soon?” is an important question to ask yourself (and learn what to do with the answer)
planning ahead means planning as if you know a disaster will strike on the due date
try not to openly claim that a state/city is the worst state/city. there is probably someone from that place in the room
uni is not a job and it’s not like high school. it’s hard, and it takes a lot of work, but you don’t have to be studying 12 hours a day (and probably shouldn’t do so)
it is crucial to have access to a dog, cat, or otherwise fluffy creature that will not judge you if you cry into its fur
